Eric didn't quite believe that he couldn't help, but he didn't want to argue. Sean was ready to talk, and Eric knew how very rare this was. He didn't want to ruin it.
He stood up and grabbed the chair that was on Sean's other side, and placed it between the two boys. Once he was seated comfortably between his sons, he sat back in a neutral pose and looked over at Sean.
"OK," he said. "I'm listening."

Sean was hesitating, but not because he was having second thoughts. He was hesitating because it had been so long since he slept for more than ten minutes at a time that his body was just literally shutting down.
"You can't tell a souls outside of Mum. No one can know because its dangerous, no matter whose hands it's in. But... I see things, Dad. Sometimes the future, sometimes the past. Sometimes right when they're happening. So that's... that's it. I'm a Seer."
He frowned. It didn't really sound like a big deal at all. "I'm just so tired."

For some reason, Eric was not surprised by this news. He should have been, but hearing Sean say the words, he realized that he should have already known. There had always been something different about Sean. He'd never been able to put his finger on it before, but now it all made sense.
"How long has this been going on?" he asked. "Why didn't you tell me sooner?"
He actually knew a little about Seers, having done some research for his work. The powers worked differently for different people... some only had vague premonitions, some were very specific. Some only saw the future, some only saw the past. Sean, it seemed, was pretty powerful.
It was dangerous, yes, if the news about Sean's power were to fall into the wrong hands. But Eric didn't care about that right now. What troubled him most was how it was wearing on him. There had to be a way to relieve some of the stress, or Sean was going to work himself into a collapse.

Sean took a deep breath. Eric didn't seem surprised at all, And Sean wondered if maybe he had known all along.
"The first time it happened was when Mum and I took Dan to the train ttion for his first year at Hogwarts. I was nine. I felt strange, so I said I had to use the loo. Mum sent Daniel with me, and it happened. I blacked It in the bathroom. When I woke up, neither of us knew What had happened. We didn't want to worry Mum, and you weren't there. So we decided not to tell her. Or you." He was talking so much more than he thought he would have, and he had no filter left to stop himself. It almost felt like a relief to tell someone everything.
"Want to know what I saw? Dan doesn't even know this ... but I saw his death. I saw my brother die when I was nine years old. How was I supposed to tell you that?"
Unlike his father, Sean didn't think he was very powerful at all. He couldn't control his visions, or see what he wanted to.
"They get more detailed and more frequent when I haven't slept... or with caffeine. I haven't actually figures out which. And there's this case that im working on.... This eleven year old girl was kidnapped. I should be able to hemp her."
This whole time, he avoided looking at Daniel, even Eric. It was like he was talking a mile a minute to tvw rug.

Eric sat up a little straighter, his eyes wide. "You... you saw Dan's death?" His gaze shot over to Daniel, as if he needed to make sure that he hadn't just dropped dead on the spot. "Is it.... Is it something that you stopped, or was it far in the future?"
Now he was back to worrying about both boys... Sean was seeing visions, and Daniel might be in danger. How was he supposed to fix this?
He took a breath and sighed. "I can't believe it's been all this time and you never told me. I.... I should have been here for you. I'm sorry that I wasn't."

Sean's eyes slowly moved up to find his brother, looking at him apologetically. He really never had told Daniel what that vision had been. He didn;t want to worry his brother any more than his mother at the time. And hell, had Daniel not been with him... Sean might have kept this secret to himself for the last ten years.
He finally shook his head. "It doesn't matter."
It was not something Sean had stopped. At the time, even, he hadn't known it was Daniel. Now that he saw his brother as an adult, the vision made sense. And it terrified Sean. "Believe me, if it was something to be worried about, I wouldn't be so calm about it. And don;t apologize... I probably wouldn't have told you, even if you had been here. For a long time, Dan and I did everything we could to minimize the visions I'd have. They hurt like hell, to be honest. They're not fun. They're never good. But recently... I don't know, I have this curse. I should try and use it, at least."

Eric frowned. He couldn't help but worry a little bit about Daniel. After all, he worked a dangerous job, and there was always the possibility that something could happen to him. But right now, his focus was on Sean.
"You know.... I know you don't want to tell people about this, but I do know someone who might be able to help you. I've consulted with him on a few runes while on the job. He used to work in the Department of Mysteries... and his daughter is an Empath. My understanding is that she has visions, too... He might be able to help you control it a little bit."
He sighed. "I don't want to push you, though. I just... I can see how it's weighing on you.... When's the last time you even got a good night's sleep?"

A growl of frustration sounded deep in Sean's throat. In an instant, his defensive tone was back, and he regretted telling his father. He shot Daniel a look, clearly asking for some kind of interference from him.
"No... Dad, this is exactly why we never told you. Stop trying to cone up with answers. We're not telling anyone. You're not telling anyone. You have no idea what this would do...." he sighed, stopping himself, his jaw clenched.
Answering his father's question, he simply said, "Recently enough."

(I distinctly remember replying to this one...)
Eric held his hands up in surrender. He had known that wouldn't work, and that Sean would not accept any help. But what was he supposed to do? He was a father, and he was watching his son fall apart in front of his eyes. How could he not try to help? But he knew that he couldn't fight this battle for Sean; he would have to do it himself. Eric just wished that it didn't look as though Sean were losing that battle.
"OK, OK," he said, his tone sounding somewhat defeated. "I won't tell anyone except your mother. And I'll heavily edit what I tell her." Just like I always do, he thought to himself.
"I just.... I wish you could see yourself right now, Sean. You look like you haven't slept in weeks. You're running on fumes, and anyone can see that. You aren't doing anyone any good, least of all yourself, if you run yourself into the ground. Please promise me you'll get some sleep. I know it's important to find that little girl... but let Daniel help you. Promise me you will, so I can reassure your mother."

Sean sighed. He knew he looked awful, and he shook his head. "It's just until these two cases are solved." That's what he kept telling himself, but he knew already that there were just going to be more cases. And it was easier when he could use his ability, but as sleep deprived as he was, it felt like the visions almost overlapped sometimes. He rubbed his eyes.
"I was going to take a nap when Dan and I got home tonight, all right? I know I'm spreading myself thin, but even I know when I've had too much." It was true.... he knew he'd had enough, but that didn't mean he was willing to do anything about it.
"Dan's been helping, Dad."

Daniel was still contemplating the fact that Sean saw his death. While Daniel knew that he was going to die eventually, just like every one did, the fact that Sean saw it hit him. He wasn't actually afraid to die, because after all he knew that it was a fact of life, and he knew the dangers of his job when he signed up for it. If he could help people along the way, and make things a little safer, then he was doing his job. Whenever it came time for him to go, he would make sure to go down swinging.
He looked to Sean after Eric said that he could have someone help. As much as Daniel wanted Sean to have more control, even he wasn't comfortable with the person Eric mentioned helping Sean. It wasn't that he didn't trust his father, it was just another way Sean's gift could be more open to others' knowledge.
Next, Daniel looked to his father and gave him a knowing look after sleep was mentioned. Tonight, he would make sure Sean got a decent night's sleep. He needed it most of all.
"That's why I carry those headache potions," Daniel finally spoke up. He knew his father saw him pull it out of his pocket earlier.

Eric wasn't exactly satisfied with that answer. He didn't want Sean to "take a nap," he wanted him to take a few days off and get some real rest. But he could already hear the arguments--they needed to find the little girl, they needed to solve the other case... and it was all too important to stop and take a break.
He could imagine how Sean's ability would come in handy in trying to find the little girl, as well as in other cases. And, yes, he knew that it could also become a dangerous tool for the enemy. But even as he worried about Sean's health and safety, he couldn't help but feel proud of his son. He was clearly putting himself through a lot to help others. Somehow, he'd raised a pretty good kid. Eric wasn't sure he deserved the credit for that, though.... maybe it was Ellen's influence.
"OK, look. You do your best to get some more sleep. And when these cases are done, please promise me you'll take a few days off and sleep. And you are eating properly, too, right? Your mother's going to worry about that, too, you know."

Sean nodded. He honestly wouldn't mind a couple days off, and his head of Department wouldn't be able to deny him, especially once Dani was found and Kryshna was caught.
"I will. And I'm eating well." Eating was the one thing he was doing right, if he didn't count his complete dependency on caffeine at this point.
He glanced again at Daniel, feeling awful that he came out with that bit about seeing his brother's death. "Don't worry about it, Dan. I've got you covered." When that time cane, he wouldn't let Dan die. He made that promise to himself from a very early age when he first realized the vision had been about Daniel.
"Mum's probably dying to come back. Are we done here?"

Eric gave Sean one more appraising look. He was somewhat tempted to invite both of the boys to stay here tonight, so that he could make sure that they were both really trying to sleep. But he had a feeling that they would both protest, and besides, what good would it do? Short of slipping Sean a sleeping potion, he couldn't really make the boy sleep. He sighed softly, reminding himself that both Sean and Daniel were grown men now, and they could take care of themselves.
"Yeah, we're done here," he said at last. "Dan, why don't you go get your mother, while I warm up our plates?"

Daniel knew that Sean had his back no matter what, and he had Sean's back no matter what. After all, Sean wasn't just his brother, he was his best friend. Sean knew him better than anyone ever had, and probably ever would.
"Yes sir," Daniel said as he stood up from the table. He made his way to where he knew his mother would be. He wondered if the vision was in the very near future, or if was just a little longer down the road. His thoughts caused him to be slightly distracted as he found his mother.
"Mum," he said coming out of his thoughts while walking up to her. He was able to give her a smile. "Let's go finish eating, shall we?"

As Daniel left to go find their mother, Sean just watched Eric. He half suspected there was something more he wanted to say, having specifically sent Dan away, but Sean wasn'tsure there was anything else to say. Still, he knew he was on edge and defensive, and he felt like he owed his father some sort of apology.
"You know... at first, we didn't tell you because we were kids and scared and didn't know better. Then we didn't tell you because we Were teenagers and bad arses. And then it was just a habit. I'm sorry I told You about Daniel, though. I didn't mean to. He'll be okay, though."

Ellen was waiting patiently, knowing that if he weren't so tired, Sean wouldn't have told them anything. If he did, it would have been to her.
But he was tired and defensive, and it was his father who was pushing for it, so as badly as she wanted to be there, Ellen left. Whatever Sean needed to get off his chest, she knew it would be easier for him if he didn't have to worry about being so candid with her around.
She looked up when Daniel came to her, and she assessed him for a moment. "All right. Everything okay?"

Eric was still too worried to really be angry. After having kept this secret for so long, for Sean to tell him now seemed especially troubling. He was glad that he had told him, but Eric suspected that it was taking a toll on Sean, more than he was even letting on. Maybe the visions were getting worse, or coming more frequently, and he was having trouble controlling them.
Still, at least Eric knew now, even if Sean wouldn't let him help. Eric couldn't help but see that as his son was reaching out to him. It was a start, anyway.
"It's all right. I wasn't there for you when you started going through this, and you couldn't tell your mother. I'm just glad you had Daniel to lean on. Just... please be careful and don't forget to take care of yourself, OK? Your job is dangerous enough without this, and I would hate for something to happen to you because you were distracted."

"Yes mum, everything is okay." Daniel knew that they couldn't keep their mother in the dark about things for much longer. Sure, ignorance could be bliss, but the way things were escalating, there was going to be a war. He only hoped that his mother would not have any part in it, whatsoever.
"Or as okay as it ever is with us." He smiled. Daniel hugged his mother as a reassurance. He started thinking that maybe it wasn't such a good idea to keep her in the dark about a lot of things, but he didn't want her to worry anymore than she already did nor did he want to put her into any danger. Most of the time knowledge was dangerous and he would prefer to keep her in the dark if that meant it kept her safe. There was no way that he could keep things from his father. His father knew him too well.
"Let's go finish eating. Dinner is still warm and my stomach is craving the rest of your delicious meal."

Ellen just looked Daniel over for a moment. She hated not knowing what was going on more than anything, especially when things like this came up.
She reached out and pulled Daniel to her, again, holding him in a hug. "You boys make it so hard not to worry, you know that? I'm so very proud of both of you, though." Still she held her eldest son for a moment, and when she released him, she held him at arm's length. "Listen to me, Dan. I know you're protective of Sean, and I know you watch out for him... but make sure you're watching out for yourself, too. You are just as important to me, and I worry about you... probably even more than I worry about him."
She gave his shoulders a squeeze and a light smile, and turned to follow him back to the dining room.
