Personality (At least 4 sentences, but longer is preferred): Edie is a difficult woman to keep up with. She is desperate for attention and affection, and this need makes her clingy and needy. Men who initially fall for her flirtatious ways are eventually driven away by her obsessive behavior and desperate clingy-ness.
Her art and her cooking are the only two things she has ever been good at. Although she would also say that, since Jessica turned out so well, she "must have been doing something right." She is prone to fits of depression and manic behavior, but, to her credit, she does not attempt to medicate herself with alcohol. She does, however, often take ant-depressants as prescribed by her therapist.
When things are going well for her, she actually can be a lot of fun. She is creative and energetic and has a good sense of humor. But it can turn on a dime and she's back to being depressed and miserable.
But despite her ability to cook, she is terribly disorganized and messy and she saves everything. Often her apartments are a complete mess, and one wonders how anyone could live like that. She is often in debt and has to borrow money from friends and even her daughter to bail her out of another debt. She jokingly says she needs to marry rich.
History (At least 4 sentences): Edie was born in a small town in Northern England. Her parents were both muggleborn and all seemed happy at first. But when Edie was 3 years old, her mother became ill with a mysterious illness that left her weak and debilitated. Though the family was not rich, her father, who worked for the Ministry, had no choice but to hire a nanny for Edie and a nurse for her mother. This drained their finances considerably, and her father had to take a second job to cover the bills.
When Edie was 5, her mother finally died of her illness. The girl barely knew her parents, since her mother had been ill for almost half of her life and her father had been working. She hoped that now, he would finally pay her some attention. But no. Though the nurse was gone, the nanny remained, and her father worked harder than ever. Edie began to act out in many ways, trying desperately for some attention. Between the ages of 5 and 9, Edie went through 8 nannies, until her father finally became enraged. He locked her up in a dark closet, with no toys or anything to entertain herself. She spent 2 days in there, screaming until her throat was raw. But since the nanny had quit, there was no one there to hear her.
When she was let out, she was subdued and quiet and even more desperate to find a way to catch her father's attention. But it didn't work. He was not interested in the girl. Any time she acted out, she was locked in the closet.
The times she was locked in the closet had a profound effect on her. Her mind began to make things up to keep her stimulated. Unfortunately, the result was that she began to have hallucinations.
When she started Hogwarts, the teachers there quickly spotted that something was wrong with the girl, and she was referred for counseling. Her counselor recommended that she channel these hallucinations and frustrations into art. She began sketching at first, and when she showed a real talent for it, she was recommended to receive formal training in art. At first, her father refuses to pay for the training and declared her a "worthless good-for-nothing that would never accomplish anything."
She was so despondent over her father's refusal to support the only thing she had ever been good at that she attempted to kill herself by ingesting a poisonous mushroom found in Herbology class. Her roommate figured out what happened and used a bezoar to save her life. The counselor found out and strongly encouraged her father to pay for the lessons, and he relented.
Edie loved her art classes infinitely more than she liked her magic classes. At last she had a place where she felt she belonged. Finally, she was calm and relaxed and happy. But the good didn't last. Edie was 16 when her father announced he was getting re-married. That in itself wasn't such a bad thing; his new fiancee was nice enough. But she had two small children, both boys. While home on for Christmas break, Edie had to watch her father acting like, well... like a father to the two boys. He played games with them, taught them how to catch, and got them expensive presents, while he still seemed to ignore Edie.
She had a major meltdown over this, screaming at her father and the fiancee and just generally making a scene. This got her locked in the old closet again. But the two little boys heard her screaming and let her out. She responded by running away, with no intentions of ever looking back. She hitched a ride with a British soldier on his way home on leave. When she revealed that she was 16 and a runaway, he was going to take her back until she told him her story. He agreed to let her stay with him for a short while. But while he was staying with her, one thing led to another, and the end result was that she became pregnant. He was 10 years her senior and not in love with her, but he married her out of duty just before he returned to duty.
The marriage was not a happy one, and her husband was frequently off on base. Edie was alone when Jessica was born. It had been a difficult pregnancy and Edie was sick often, and she nearly bled to death giving birth. It was recommended that she not have any more children.
After Jessica was born was when Edie's manic-depressive disorder kicked in. It started mostly as post-partum depression, but she also had strange fits of energy and excitement. She churned out many paintings during this time, and often neglected Jessica. Her husband insisted she go for counseling and the nature of her illness was discovered. She went on medication, and she seemed to even out for a while and began taking care of Jessica properly.
She adored her daughter, and really did want to correct all the mistakes that had been made with her when she was a child, so she tried her best to take care of Jessica. But her husband was seldom home, and one night, Edie turned to a friend of the family for comfort. Her husband caught her in the act, and that led to their divorce. They agreed to split custody of Jessica evenly, but they do not see each other at all.
Over the years, Edie fell into a self-destructive pattern of dating a guy, moving in with him or him moving in with her, then getting dumped by him. It continued all through Jessica's school years, and it hasn't changed. In addition to Jessica's father, Edie has been married two other times, and both of those times, her husbands left her for someone younger, prettier, and less "crazy."
