Warren waited till it was dark and most of the students were in their dorms to put on his cloak and slip out of the common room for a while. When you put a whole bunch of Slytherin's in the same room for a long period of time, things could get messy, and tonight, Warren just wasn't in the mood to pick on first years or get bullied by seventh years. Wow, being stuck right in the middle kinda sucked.
He slipped past a prefect in pure silence, and rolled his eyes at a couple making out in a not-so-hidden part of a hallway before he reached outside. The wind blew and he tightened his cloak around him while making his way to the Lake.
In March, the clouds at night weren't as thick as they were in the colder parts of winter, and Warren thought looking at the stars from the lake was better than looking at them from the astronomy tower. He lied on the ground, putting his hands behind his head and just stared up at the stars. Warren stayed like that for a while before he heard a crunch from the other side of the big tree that was about 20 feet away from him.
"Who's there?" Warren asked, pulling out his wand and lighting it, pointing it at the tree.

Xavier similarly felt like he was stuck in the middle. It wasn't just that he was a third year and surrounded by pompous sixth and seventh years and first and second years who thought they were better than what they were. He was stuck in the middle of everything. In his family, he saw himself as being stuck between the hapless (Tim and Thane) and the older kids (Gwen and Justin) who had more adult concerns. He may have been the youngest, but he thought himself above Thane and Timmy and more on an even level with Justin and Gwen. And yet, he really was still a child, with all the concerns of childhood. He hated it, and wished he could just grow up already. But by the time he did, Justin and Gwen would have left him behind.
He had little tolerance for the inane behavior of his fellow Slytherins. Most of them were just indulging in the worst possible behaviors and didn't bother to think about things once in a while. Xavier didn't really fit in with them. He thought all the time, about everything. If it weren't for the fact that Thane was in Ravenclaw, Xavier would think that was where he truly belonged, rather than in Slytherin. But Xavier didn't wish to be like Thane, he believed he was better than that. If there was anything that made him fit in Slytherin, it was his silent belief that he was better than other people.
Bored with the antics of his fellow Slytherins and not in the mood to go to sleep yet, Xavier decided to take a walk by the lake. He had actually been out there before Warren slipped out, having made his exit a good 20 minutes earlier. He was walking by the big tree when he stepped on a tree branch. Immediately, he heard a voice and saw the light from someone's wand.
"That depends on who wants to know," Xavier said.

"I'm asking that's who!" Warren said, not liking the attitude. If one was going to sneak up on someone, they should identify themself when caught so as to save themselves from being hexed in the face.
Warren rounded the tree and his light fell on Xavier Scotts. "Oh, it's you," Warren said, lowering his wand. He had nothing against the Scotts kid, so he didn't really feel threatened by his presence. "What are you up to? Wandering the ground in the dark like that?" Warren asked.

Xavier just liked to talk tough sometimes. It seemed like it was expected of Slytherins, so he played along. Sometimes he didn’t really want to talk and preferred to be left alone, so he put on the act everyone expected him to have.
But seeing that it was Warren, he dropped his half-hearted attempts at an attitude. Warren, at least, didn’t seem to feel the need to be obnoxious and crude like many of his housemates. In fact, if Xavier considered anyone a friend, it would probably be Warren.
“Oh, hey. You know, I had to get out of there. I was going a little crazy. You?”

"Yea, I know wat you mean," Warren said. "It gets too crowded sometimes. Whoever built the common room should have realized that a bunch of Slytherins shouldn't be couped up close together like that." he laughed.
"Well, you're welcome to join me. I warn you I'm probably not that entertaining right now," Warren said as he went back to where he was sitting on the grass.

Xavier shrugged carelessly. “It’s OK,” he said. “No one said you had to entertain me. If I wanted entertainment, I’d go back to the common room and watch the seventh year girls arguing with each other.”
The cat fights between the seventh year girls, particularly Lyra and Brenda, were somewhat legendary in Slytherin house. And Xavier supposed that it was interesting to watch, if you were the voyeuristic type. But Xavier was sort of a live-and-let-live sort of boy, and he while he found people interesting to watch, he didn’t get the same enjoyment out of it that boys like Rystain or Rabastan did.
He sat down on the grass next to Warren and cast a sideways glance at the boy. “So how come you’re out here, anyway?”

"ME? No reason really..." Warren shrugged. "Getting my space." He wasn't too fond of many of the Slytherins, especially the older students. Most of them were overly predictable and to Warren - boring. He wanted something a little more stmulating.
It was rough being as smart as he was sometimes. Warren let out a sigh and lied back on the grass watching the sky again. He had said he wouldn't be much entertainment for Xavier, but the Worren knew that he had already known that when he had approached him.

"Yeah, same here," Xavier replied, staring straight ahead at the lake. It looked interesting in the dark; black yet shimmering with the glow of moonlight. It reminded Xavier of spilled ink.
"I'm used to never having space of my own. At home, I have my brothers and sister, and here I have my roommates and the other Slytherins... sometimes I just want to be left alone, you know? It's hard to think with all those people all around me. I'm not bothering you, am I, by sitting here? Kind of ruins the point if you want to be alone and someone else is sitting here."
