Chase wanted to take this oppertunity to go home. Galen was in and willing to look at Kieran's patient now, which meant that Chase should have been off the hook.
Somehow, he knew the Kieran would see it as being passed off, and that was the last thing he wanted to convey to the healer.
He took a deep breath, hiding his own exhaustion and smiling at both of them. He hoped Maia would understand. She was used to him working extended hours... this would just be another one of those times when he came home at some odd hour and slept most of the day away.
"We're dealing with a curse," he offered up, letting Kieran give the details.

Kieran eyed Chase for a moment. This should have been his cue to leave. Galen was Chase's replacement, which meant that Chase was free to go home for the day. He was under no obligation to stay. And yet, he was staying anyway, just because Kieran had asked him for help. He was tempted at this point to just tell them both to forget about it and that he'd handle it himself. He may not have been at the top of his game these days, but he should certainly be able to handle a little curse. He didn't need two people to help him.
But he was grateful that they were both willing to help him, and he was just so tired... He bit the inside of his cheek, then sighed before he explained the situation to Galen.
"I really appreciate the help," he finished, in case they doubted it.

Galen listened to Kieran's explanation of the case, looking quietly between Kieran and Chase. Both of them seemed somewhat distracted to him, and he wondered what else they had been talking about before he walked in. Surely it wasn't just about the case. Like everyone else on staff, he was well aware of Kieran's situation. And right now, Kieran just looked done. Was that why Chase was insisting on staying to help him with this patient, when he really should be going home?
"It does sound like a curse specific to the patient," he said thoughtfully. "That's why nothing happens when you open the box. Where does the patient work? Maybe that has something to do with it."

"Or enemies. Has anyone from the MLE been able to offer any suggestions? Who brought the patient in?"
All were questions that he was sure Kieran had already considered, but then, he did just find him drinking on the job, so he couldn't be too sure. He couldn't blame the guy with everything going on, so all he was really trying to do was just to help.
He didn't feel right leaving right now. It would be like Kieran was a responsibility, and he was shifting it to Galen's shoulders. That was not the message he wanted to portray right now.

Was it terrible that suddenly Kieran didn't care? He didn't care about any of this... he just wanted another drink. But he didn't dare have another sip, especially not while Chase was still here. Was that why Chase was staying? He thought he needed to keep an eye on him? But on the other hand, he probably would have been annoyed if Chase left and passed him off on Galen.
Sighing, Kieran rubbed his hands over his face. He felt like he was about ready to drop, and even the little nip of firewhiskey he'd had wasn't having much of an effect.
"His wife brought him in," he said. "Apparently he works at the Daily Prophet, and wrote an editorial saying something about muggleborns being better than purebloods. Come to think of it, the guy probably was lucky he didn't get something more deadly... But I'm just worried that this curse could turn deadly if I can't stop the bleeding."

Chase frowned, even deeper if possible. Kieran looked worn out, and he really thought the kid should take a few days off, even if it was forced. But sitting around and doing nothing would probably only be worse for him, once Chase thought about it.
"I don't know. Maybe Galen and I could go with you when you check up on him? Three heads are better than one, or so they say. There's got to be a solution."
