The family crisis should have been over. Roland was alive, he was well and happy and in love. Blake was dead, and Emelia was free. And Mathieu was back at home with Cara, where he should have been all along.
But things were still not right. Roland's "death" had left deep scars that even his miraculous return couldn't quite seem to heal. Although he was back at home, Cara had plainly not forgiven him yet, and he was relegated to sleeping in Roland's old bedroom. Things between them were chilly, at best. And Emelia was completely in denial about the kind of man her husband had been and wanted nothing to do with the Ferreras. And Mathieu still woke at night believing Roland was dead. Sometimes he wasn't sure what to believe.
Mathieu needed someone to talk to, and the only one he could ever really open up to was his brother. So one evening, he went over to his brother's house, hoping that Suri wouldn't be too offended if they went off for a private chat.
He took a deep breath and knocked on the door.

Judah and Suri had been in the kitchen together. He had decided that it would be a good idea if he attempted to make a cake. Once he finally found the directions, Judah didn't have that much trouble making it. He slid it into the oven and kissed Suri on the cheek. Luckily the kitchen wasn't in a complete mess. Most of the counter space Judah had been using was covered in flour, but other than that, it was alright.
He kept himself busy and tried his best not to dwell on what had happened. Roland was back and everything was slowly coming together, even if it wasn't like it used to be. Everything took time and Judah tried to do his best to keep a foot forward.
Hearing a knock on the door, Judah removed his apron and wiped some flour off that gotten on his shirt. "I'll get it," he said walking out of the kitchen. Judah reached the door and opened it, seeing his brother on the other side. Mathieu still looked bad but not as bad as he had before.
"Evening Mathieu," Judah said putting a gentle smile on his face while he greeted his brother. "Do you want to come in?"

Mathieu managed a tired smile. It was more than he had been able to do before, when he still believed Roland was dead. Then, the idea of any kind of smile would have been unthinkable.
"Hi, Jude," he said, looking his brother up and down. The smudge of flour on his shirt did not escape Mathieu's notice, and he hoped that he was not interrupting anything. "I was, er... I was rather hoping we could talk, but if you're busy, I could come back another time..."

"No, no," Judah said waving his words away. "I'm not busy. You know I always have time for you, besides, I have to wait for awhile anyway and I believe that Suri is going to finish it up." He opened the door wider for Mathieu to come in.
"Come on in. We can go into the living room if you would like. I can always get you tea or something to eat if you want."

Mathieu followed Judah into the living room and gave him a tired smile. "Tea would be nice, thank you. But I don't need anything to eat. Just about the only time Cara speaks to me these days is when it's time for dinner."
He sighed heavily and sank down onto the sofa, rubbing his hands over his face. "I don't know what to do, Judah. Roland's back and everything should be fine.... but it's not. Everything's a mess."

"Tea. You got it," he said before disappearing into the kitchen for a quick moment to grab two cups of tea from the kettle that Suri had not long put on. He told her that his brother was there and that he would join her in the kitchen shortly.
Returning to the living room, Judah handed Mathieu his. "I'm not going to lie to you Mathieu. It's going to take a little time before things become some kind of fine. I mean, Cara is talking to you, even if it is just at dinner. Roland's return is not going to suddenly make everything better. Time is what is going to make things better, as well as family." He sighed as he relaxed in his chair. Judah stopped talking, knowing that Mathieu needed the chance to just get it out.

Mathieu ran a hand through his hair. "All along, I just kept thinking, if Roland came back, everything would be fine. I didn't think it could actually happen... but it did. And now that it has, I realize that believing he was dead caused so many other things to fall apart... and those can't be fixed overnight. And I really think it would have been the same for any of the children. But how can we protect them? We're all at risk. This war is just beginning, and it's going to take a lot of people before it's over. When I thought Roland was dead... all I could think about was that we were all probably going to join him soon enough. And now he's back and he's happy and in love and starting a family.... and I'm happy for him, but there's a part of me that can't stop worrying about the future."

"The future is something we all worry about. We can see it coming but we don't know how it's going to present itself. There is a war brewing and there is nothing we can really do about it except for fight and give it our all. All we can do right now is savor what we have because you never know what tomorrow brings, even if there is a tomorrow." Judah took in a deep breath and looked to his brother.
"We want to protect our children the best we can, and it is our job to teach them what we know and hope that one day they can protect themselves. We cannot prevent everything from happening, so we have to prepare. We have to make sure that our family knows that we love them. That's really all we can do."
The future scared Judah. He was unsure what the war was going to bring. Lives were going to be lost, that was certain. It could be friends, co-workers, even family. The war was going to tear them apart, and somehow they were going to have to pull it together again, that is if they survived.
"But we're going to make it Mathieu. One way or another, after all we need each other."

Mathieu sighed and began to rub his head. The more he thought about the future, the more it troubled him. It just seemed like one big question mark. And even that would have been OK, if only the present wasn't so messed up.
"It's all so confusing," he said tiredly. "Sometimes I'm not even sure what's real anymore. A week ago, we all thought Roland was dead. Now he's back, and he's acting as if nothing even happened. Like everything is just the way it was. And Riley--"
He stopped, remembering that Judah had not been told the true story of what had happened and where Roland had been. Judah didn't know that Riley had lied to them all when she told them Roland was dead.
"He spends all his time with Riley now... And I'm happy that he's found love, but we just got him back...."
