Voltaire walked toward the lake and Natalie's tree. He knew it wasn't her tree, but she was always there, detached and watching the world drift by. He wondered if she felt safer in that tree than around people. He didn't bother to look up, he began to climb the tree and see if he saw her once he was in the branches.

Natalie saw Voltaire as he began to climb up the tree. She didn't say anything at first, just watched his attempts to scale the trunk and search for her. "You're looking for me, aren't you?" she said quietly as he came closer. "You want me to come down and spend time with you, right?"

Voltaire huffed and smiled as he found her, "what made you think that? I was just getting to know this tree... Of course I want you to spend time with me! Aren't you a bit lonely up here?" he asked climbing up and sitting on a sturdy branch, any higher and he'd have to hold on for support.

"No," Natalie said. "I like to be alone. It's the only time I can be sure that my feelings are my own and not someone else's. Like I can already tell that you are worried about your memory problems and you're afraid you won't be a good father. You also would much rather be with Isabella doing things I'm not supposed to know about."

"Now that isn't entirely true... Yes my memory worries me, and yes I do Love Isabella, But what you fail to divine is that I'm also worried about you....and you don't REALLY know what I do with Isa do you?!" he said trying to clamp his mind totally shut. There were things even an empath as young as she was didn't need to know!

"I know you kiss a lot," Natalie said. "Like my parents did. It was gross, actually. But you should worry about your memory. It's going to get worse. Why would you worry about me? You're just watching me while Uncle Alastor is gone."

Voltaire sighed with a relief and then he was stung by what she said next. "Natalie... I worry about you, because you feel that you're so right. Do you think by staying up here, and not being near anyone...that it really will stop the world from turning? Natalie...everything might not happen for a destined reason...but sometimes things just happen." he said holding out a hand to her. "please...come down with me." he said a bit sadly.

"I know," Natalie said."But I don't want to know so much about the world and every turn it makes. Do you know how it is to be only ten but feel like you've lived a thousand lives? Everyone treats me like a kid, but I don't feel like one. I wish... I wish I could just be normal. Like other kids. Is that wrong?"

"But being up in a tree won't make you a normal kid...I know my memory hasn't been getting better...I know it's been worse, but I haven't let that stop my life Natalie..."he said still holding out his hand.

She stared at his hand. "The thing is, you have a good life. You have something to live for. You and Isabella love each other, so much that you could overcome anything. You'll be OK. Even though your memory will get worse, eventually, it will be worth it. Me... I have nothing except these stupid visions and the ability to feel whatever anyone else is feeling. Although, I like being with you and Isabella, because your love for each other blocks out everything else. And that's a good feeling."

Voltaire smiled at Natalie. "what makes you think you aren't worthy of love? or a life? You don't have to live everyone else's life Natalie, You've already seen my life and my head, and I know it has to be terrible to know what everyone does and says, but the rest of us bounce through life never knowing for sure...never knowing for sure if we are in love, or if we are sad or even knowing who they really are... can you tell who you are?" he asked letting his hand drape over a tree branch.

"I loved my parents and I love my sister. But now my parents are dead, and my sister's going to die. How can I get too attached to anyone if I know what's going to happen to them?" Natalie asked.

"Natalie... that's just like everyone else, they get attached no matter what... If I thought I knew Isa was going to die a year after me falling in love with her, do you think I would leave her?" he asked smiling, he knew the answer in his heart was no. because even if she did die, he was happier to have known her.

"I... guess you're right," she said sadly. "I just... I miss my parents. And I miss Sabrina, even though she's still here. I used to be so close to my dad... Sabrina was always closer to Mommy." She looked at Voltaire again. "I'll come down now," she said.

"good, Come on it's nice here, but it's not the nicest place I've been." he said with a smile. Voltaire slid off of the branch and thankfully un hurt. " can you seen the nicer places I've been? or don't you have any control over what you see?" he asked curiously as she climbed down the tree.

Natalie climbed down out of the tree and stood before him. Shaking her head, she said, "I normally can't see the past. Just the present or the very recent past, and the future. Things that are in motion, not things that are over."

Voltaire knelt down and asked " Really? Do you want a piggy back ride?" he grinned as he knew his question came from out of the blue.

"My daddy used to give me piggyback rides," she said. "When I was little, he would do it, and he'd make little horsey noises. I miss him." She tilted her head and looked at him seriously. "I guess it would be OK if you gave me one. But you don't have to make horsey noises."

Voltaire grinned "You're not very good at divining the future if you'd think I'd pass up the opportunity to make strange noises!" he laughed and hoisted her on to his shoulders. "Now, would he neigh, nicker or snort?" he asked doing all three for her to choose from.

Natalie clung to his shoulders. Although she liked Voltaire, she wanted to pretend, just for a minute, that her dad was still alive. "All of them, of course," she replied. "Giddyup, horsey!"
