"Thank you," Alison chimed in as Jensen sat the platter on the opposite end of the table. She smiled and turned back to Geoffrey.
"Poker with cookies, I can do that." She smiled again. The thought of playing with cookies was pretty amusing but she had played that way before. Of course, whenever she would play with her grandmother, the majority of the cookies would get eaten before too long.
"Do you want to shuffle or should I?"

"We'll take turns shuffling," Geoffrey said. "I'll shuffle and deal this hand, and you do the next one."
He began to shuffle the cards deftly, having been taught by his uncles a long time ago. "OK, we'll do 5-card draw, aces high, jokers wild. One cookie per bet. While I'm shuffling, why don't you dole out the cookies?"
Suddenly, he was very cheerful... almost too cheerful. Maybe he was trying too hard, but he wanted Alison to think that everything was OK. Because maybe if she believed it, then he would, too... and then it would be true.

"Sounds good," she said as she turned toward the cookies. Alison started to even out how many cookies they each had.
Geoffrey's sudden change did go noticed and in a way it worried her. Yes, she was glad that he seemed that he was doing better, but yet it also seemed a little weird. The more she thought about the hospital, and even now, it made her want to frown. However, right now she couldn't think about it. She just needed to be there for him.
"I think that's completely even."

It was entirely possible that he had been released too soon. Maybe it wasn't healthy to be stuck inside the hospital, but even in the comforts of home, Geoffrey was definitely.... off. And he knew it. He was going through the motions, and trying as hard as he could to be normal. But he was lost. And as hard as he tried, he couldn't seem to find his way back to himself. Maybe he never would be the same, but at the moment, he refused to accept that. He thought that maybe if he pretended to be normal long enough that it would become true.
"Good," he said as he finished shuffling. "I wonder how long we'll be able to play before we eat all of our cookies."
He winked at that, and began dealing out the cards. Once they each had five cards, he set the deck down and placed in his bet of one cookie. "You're first," he said.

She wanted to tell him that he didn't have to try so hard to be back to his old self again, that it was alright if he took the time to just build himself back up. However, she didn't say anything about it. Maybe she should have but if he wanted to attempt to act normal, she didn't want to bring everything crashing down.
Alison kept the frown off her face while she put up a smile. She put in a cookie in just as he did. Picking up her cards, Alison looked at her cards and took two out of her hand facing downward. "Two cards, please," she said with a hint of a smile. She could just please him for a little while and help make everything seem somewhat normal, right?

He nodded and dealt out two cards from the deck, then picked up his own cards. He had two eights, a five, a four, and a queen. He frowned for a second, then took out all but the two eights. "Three cards for me," he said. He then discarded the three cards and took three more.
Without looking at the cards he had picked, he looked to Alison. "OK, you're up first."

Looking at her hand, Alison bit her bottom lip as she tried to figure out what she had. She kept a straight face as she rearranged the cards in her hand before laying them face up in front of her. One king, a queen, two sixes, and a joker were the cards that she laid out in front of her.
Moving her eyes from her cards, Alison glanced over to Geoffrey to see what his hand ended up being.

He was distracted for a moment, watching her as she concentrated. He thought it was cute the way she bit her lips when she was thinking. When she set her cards down, he looked at them for a minute, then said, "Three sixes. Not bad."
He looked at his cards then, and saw that he had picked up two tens and an ace. "You win," he said, setting the cards down in front of him. "A pair of eights and a pair of tens."

She gave a smile before reaching for one of the cookies in the middle. Instead of piling it with her other cookies, she took a bite out of it and offered the other one to Geoffrey. "We'll still be even," she said after she could speak properly once she swallowed the bite of the cookie.
Alison smiled sheepishly and set the cookie down she had taken a bite out of. "It was just screaming eat me," she said with a laugh and a shrug. She took the cards and started to shuffle the deck.
Once she dealt the cards out, she looked at her hand before glancing up to see if Geoffrey wanted any cards.

Geoffrey let out a laugh as he took the cookie from her. "A girl after my own heart," he said. He took a bite of the cookie and set it down. "But we're never going to know who's winning this way."
He winked at her to let her know that he didn't mind. Still, he put another cookie in the center of the table before picking up his cards. He had two aces, a king, a six and a four. Again, he took out all but the aces and placed the cards down, face down. "Three cards."

"Which ever one of us that doesn't feel sick after eating so many cookies I think will be the winner," she teased lightly.
Alison took three cards off the top of the deck and slid them to him face down. Taking three cards from her own hand she laid them down. "Three cards," said Alison as she took three off the top of the deck. Her cookie had already been placed into the middle. Looking down at her hand, she had nothing. A queen, a six, a four, and two twos were the cards she held in her hand.
"You first," she said with a hint of a smile before finished off her already bitten cookie.

Geoffrey laughed again. "That sounds about right," he replied as he finished his own cookie. He looked down at his cards and saw that he had picked up another ace, along with a Jack and a three.
He laid his cards down. "Three aces," he said. He reached over and made to grab both cookies, then at the last minute, handed one to her.
They continued on this way for quite a while, each of them taking turns shuffling and dealing. They seemed to be winning an equal number of hands as well, even though it was difficult to tell when they kept eating their bets. After a while, they had each eaten close to a dozen cookies each (it was a good thing they were small), and Geoffrey was beginning to feel a little bit sick.
"Your deal," he said, handing her the cards again while he tried to eat his cookie.

Alison was starting to feel extremely full from all the cookies that they were eating. She didn't really think that she could eat anymore.
She took the cards and started to shuffle again. The number of hands they had played as well as the number of cookies she had eaten escaped her. The only thing she really knew was she couldn't eat anymore.
Once the cards were passed out and her cookie was in the middle, she looked at her hand. Two kings, a two and two eights were the cards in her hand. Already knowing what she wanted to do, she looked up at him. "Cards or no cards?"

Geoffrey looked down at his cards and frowned. He had a ten, a three, a five, and an eight, all spades. He also had a Jack of diamonds. His only hope was to go for a flush, but the odds weren't good. Still, it wasn't exactly a high-stakes game. And he didn't mind if she won. Each time she won a hand, she got this cute little blush in her cheeks.
Taking out the Jack, he placed it face down on the table. "One card."

"One card for you," she said taking the first card off the top of the deck and sliding it to him. Alison picked one card from her hand and picked a card up for herself. "And one for me."
The card she picked up ended up being a three, but she did have two pair in her hand. "You know, I don't think I can eat another cookie," she said waiting for him to show his hand. Once he showed his, she laid her cards down face up.

"That means I've already won, right?" he teased, biting into another cookie. Of course, he was just as full as she was, and he had a hard time finishing his mouthful.
He hesitated for a moment, creating a dramatic pause. He smiled mysteriously, watching her face for a reaction, then he laid his cards down on the table. Now he had added a seven of spades to his hand, giving him a flush.
"Read 'em and weep," he said jokingly.

Alison raised her eyebrows at his smile and then started to laugh as she saw his cards. "Well, you won by eating more cookies, and you also won the game." She gave a wink before relaxing in her chair.
"I can't believe I'm so full off of cookies. I haven't done that since I was probably thirteen or fourteen," she said putting a hand on her stomach with a smile. Alison let out a sigh and gave him an accusing yet jokingly look.

Geoffrey laughed. "Well, now that we're both stuffed full of cookies, and the game is over, I guess it's time for me to claim my prize, right?"
He winked at her, then got up from his seat and walked over to where she was sitting. He held out his hand to her, helping her up. "How about a dance?"

"I suppose it is," Alison said smiling. She wasn't expecting what he wanted as a prize, so her eyebrows rose as he asked her for a dance.
"A dance?" She smiled again and took his hand. "I suppose I could. I have to find a way to work off the cookies anyhow." Alison gave a laugh and stood up. She was going to amuse him. After all, seeing him smile and hearing him laugh, even if they seemed a little off, was a good thing.

Merlin, he was trying so hard. He wanted to be himself again, the guy Alison had liked so much. He really was glad to see her, and although he hadn't realized it at the time, he had missed her very much. Her smile could brighten a room. What he didn't realize was that just having things back the way they used to be didn't magically make what happened disappear. It had happened, and there was no escaping that. He needed to talk about it, to face it, to dea with it, and then put it in its place so he could move on. He was trying to skip a few steps.
None of these things had occurred to him yet, however. He was focusing on the matter at hand, which was dancing with Alison. He bowed slightly and took her hand, leading her out to an imaginary dance floor. With a wave of his wand, music started up from somewhere, and James Taylor's dulcet tones filled the room as they began to dance.
