"I like to learn too," Sheena said. "but not in the way teachers teach, you know? There's just so many ways someone could learn something, in a classroom isn't the only way. There's books and personal experiences and just going out there and doing it, living by trial and error." she babbled a bit, but smiled, hoping Xavier would get what she was saying. "Not everything is about studying theory, you know?" she added.

Xavier nodded. He was often bored in classes, too. Sure, they tried to make them interesting by having them actually do the spells, and he didn’t mind that. But writing papers and taking tests were just pointless in Xavier’s eyes. Essays were just a lot of dragon dung filling up parchment space. If you wrote it well enough, it was easy to convince the professor that you knew the material just by making up a bunch of fancy but meaningless observations. And tests were just all based on bland memorization, and didn’t actually prove how smart someone was. They only proved that they could memorize.
“Yeah, I agree,” he said. “But what I like to do is study people. How they act in certain situations, and around certain people. I’m not much of a doer or a talker. I’m an observer. People are fascinating, don’t you think?”

"People can be interesting," Sheena herself had caught herself watching her family when they were all together. There was so much of them that she was usually just swallowed whole and no one seemed to notice her. "Especially the older kids around here, sometimes they're so strange and I find myself wondering if I'll be like that when I get to the higher grades."
