The Yule Ball had came and passed. It was a fun night, that was for sure. The night was pretty much danced away and she was relieved that she didn't spend the night in the corner attempting to make conversation. Although, the idea of her just sitting in the corner didn't ever really cross her mind. Between dancing with Reese and Anonimus, she was practically on her feet all night that night.
Now, Kristen was still as normal as she'd ever be. Her Hufflepuff scarf was wrapped around her neck and her cloak clasped. The air wasn't as crisp as it was before Christmas. She wasn't sure how to really describe the weather but it was her favorite month, other than February, excluding Valentine's Day. That was one day she never cared to much for.
The sound of her steps made a crunching like noise as she walked slowly. She was just wasting time and clearing her head if possible. That was the best thing about going down to the lake, especially when it was cold. Other students were rarely seen down there because of the cold.
With her hands deep into her pockets, she let out a sigh. Her breath could been seen after she exhaled. Kristen continued her slow, crunching sounding, walk down to the lake.

Reese had his red Gryffindor scarf around his neck, and his hands shoved deep in the pockets of his cloak. He was in the middle of a group of boys coming back from the Quidditch Pitch, and they were all laughing and throwing snow at each other. Merlin, Reese hated the cold.
A girl passed them, and his neck straightened as he watched her walk by in the other direction. She hadn't even noticed him. And if he had to bet, he would say she was going down to the lake. He didn't get it, but whatever she liked, he thought.
After telling the boys he would catch up with them (and dealing with their remarks when they saw he was going after a girl) he altered his course until he met her by the water.
He hadn't properly talked to her since that day she kissed his cheek, and even though they danced at the ball, she'd been there with Anonimous.
"Hey," he said kind of lamely, hoping to catch her attention. It was cold... it was the best he could come up with.

She had stopped for a moment near the water. It was a pretty view, seeing almost everything covered in snow.
Kristen heard his footsteps before he even spoke. "Still stalking me are you," she teased turning her head towards him. Her yellow scarf brightened her face and it seem to make her smile brighter than what it was.
It was true that they hadn't really spoken like they usually did since the day he healed the small cut she had on her head. That had been forever ago it seemed. And it was the first time she had ever turned slightly embarrassed and shy.
"Quidditch practice?"

She figured out that it was him all too soon, without even turning around, and Reese was sort of impressed, if not a little disappointed. He'd hoped to surprise her or something.
"Sweetie, you're the one following my Quidditch practice schedules, so if I had to lable one of us as the stalker, I think it be you, Yellow." He was teasing her, as always, and the tone in his voice said as much. What his tone didn't say was what he was thinking. He missed her, and he should have just blurted the words out. But he didn't.
"What is it with you and the cold, Kristen?" It was rare that he ever actually said her name instead of some kind of nickname, and usually signaled that he was ready for at least a half serious conversation.

"You figured me out," she said with fake disappointment. "I happened to talk one of your friends into making me a copy of your schedule and I keep it hidden underneath my pillow." Her tone was still joking. "I like to see you all sweaty." Kristen gave him a grin.
When Reese used her name, it was a little surprising. "It's a good time to have a little time to yourself. You don't have to worry about other students running around all the time because the majority of them are inside. Although, sometimes the occasional person comes by, but that's alright." Her voice had lost the joking tone.

"I knew it!" Reese said, teasingly, and when she added that she liked to see him sweaty, there may have been a hint of a blush to his cheeks. If she pointed it out, he would pass it off as the cold. He didn't handle it as well as she did, especially since he was sweaty right now.
"Do you want me to go?" he asked, knowing that she came down here for peace and quiet, and he was interrupting that. But he wanted to talk to her, too. Things had just been busy since the ball, and he hadn't gotten a chance to really say hi. He found that he was regretting that now.

If she hadn't had her thoughts together, she would have answered extremely quickly but luckily she did have her thoughts together, well most of them anyway.
"No, you don't have to go." Kristen grew quiet for a moment. If that statement put any kind of doubt in his mind, she knew she had to clear it up. "I mean, I want you to stay. You're not bothering me." The cold had already turned her cheeks pink so she didn't have to worry about any blushing. "And we haven't really talked in awhile, so please, stay." She made sure that there wasn't any kind of joking in her voice, and she wanted to make sure that he knew he wasn't really interrupting anything.

"Good," he said, unguarded. "I've been meaning to talk to you, too."
There was an honest undercurrent to their conversation, and he wondered if it was supposed to be awkward. Because it really wasn't, and Reese was almost grateful for it.
"So, hey, I never got to ask," he said, bringing his tone up so that the conversation didn't seem so serious. "Did you have fun at the ball? You looked really pretty."

She had wondered if what she said before sounded lame, or if it was like she was begging him to stay, but he never said anything about it so there wasn't any kind of awkwardness.
A smile found itself on her face. "I had loads of fun," Kristen said. "Between you and Anonimus, that was enough fun to last me for about a month." Of course it was a small exaggeration but she wanted to make sure he knew she was serious. "And thank you. You looked pretty, er, handsome all dressed up. Did you have fun?"

Reese shrugged. "It was all right. I went mostly for Jackie, and she and Dean seemed to have worked things out, so I was a wallflower for most of the night."
Except when he was dancing with her, which wasn't nearly enough for Reese. He couldn't explain away the jealous feeling in the pit of his stomach when he saw them together, but he still didn't quite know what it meant, either.
"Anonimous, though. Interesting choice to take to the dance."

Kristen only nodded to his reply. Although, his next words made her feel like her stomach dropped. "Anonimous, yeah. He's a friend. He had to leave school for a while because of some stuff at home and then he came back, obviously. Since the ball was coming up, he asked me to go and I didn't want him to just go and feel awkward or anything." She didn't know why but she felt the need to explain the reason why she chose to go with him.
"At first, I thought about not going at all." She gave a shrug.

"Explains why I've never seen him around," Reese murmured. It didn't really matter, except that Kristen had gone to the ball with him, and that meant that there was probably something more than friends there.
No, that wasn't true. He was supposed to go with Jackie and they were just friends. And it wasn't really his business who she went with anyway.
"Why wouldn't you have gone?" He asked, looking up from the snow covered bank of the lake to look in her eyes.

She didn't quite hear his murmuring. "I wouldn't have really gone because I didn't want to go alone plus there would be the whole going out and trying on a dress." Kristen wasn't sure what exactly came over her next. "And I wanted you to ask me to go, but I knew that wasn't going to happen," she said.
Once she realized what she said, Kristen couldn't quite meet his eyes and her cheeks turned even darker.

Reese's eyes shot up again when they heard that last part, and for a moment, he thought he misheard her. Wishful thinking and all, right? For as much as he teased her, and the relationship they'd shared since day one, Reese always knew he sort of liked her. But asking her to the ball would have earned him a lot of teasing from her, and he hadn't asked simply to avoid that. That, and the fact that she went with Anonimous, and Jackie needed him at the time.
But then he saw her blushing, and avoiding his eyes, and he smiled. "You don't know that," he said softly. "You didn't really give me a chance, did you?"

Kristen didn't even pay attention to Reese smiling. "You had a lot of time to ask," she said, "You know where I usually am. Even if you would have written it and owled it to me, I would have went. It was up to you to come to me and ask but you didn't. I wasn't going to just go to you to see if you would." No, she wasn't mad. She was far from it. "And Anonimus asked two weeks before the dance. You had over a month."
She stopped talking for a moment because she didn't want to accidentally say something she didn't want him to hear. Swallowing, her eyes met his for just a second before they looked at the snow again. "I should be going. I've got a few things to finish before tomorrow." Kristen was trying to think of some kind of excuse to just go. It wasn't that she didn't want to be around him. It was just she was actually scared of any kind of teasing that could happen if she ever admitted that she liked him.

Reese's eyebrows went up and he almost laughed. Not at her, but at the situation. Sure, maybe he didn't realize he wanted to take her until she was already going with Anonimous, but he was a guy. He needed a wake up call sometimes. What did she expect?
He crossed his arms over his chest. She ran away from him a lot, he was starting to realize. "No, you don't have anything you have to finish," he said as though he was certain of it. He wanted her to look at him again.
"You didn't have to say yes to him." Just knowing she'd been asked probably would have made him ask her himself.

"You don't know if I have anything to finish," she said with a little huff in her voice as she looked up to him again. She should have known that he wasn't going to let her go that easily. Even if she walked up to the castle anyway, it wouldn't be hard for him to catch her.
"And I did. He's one of my friends and I didn't want him to feel completely out of place. Even if I hadn't said yes, I doubt that you would have said anything. Besides, it was already close to the dance and I wouldn't have had a chance to get a dress any other time. If he hadn't said anything, then I wouldn't have gone at all."

"I'm a guy," he said, almost exasperatedly. "We don't figure these things out very quickly, in case you haven't noticed in six years of knowing me. I wanted to ask you."
Again, he kept it to himself that he only realized he wanted to ask her after she'd already said yes to Anonimous, but it was the jealousy that got to him. "And you looked very pretty. You wouldn't have even needed a fancy dress or anything. Did you even notice how many times I cut in to dance with you?"

"Then you should have!" Kristen nearly rolled her eyes. She did know that it was true it took them forever to figure things out but she didn't see where that was still really an excuse as to why he still didn't ask her.
"That dress wasn't that fancy and I wouldn't have shown up in something like this. Plus, you know me, I don't really own any dresses. There is one but I don't even know if it still fits or not." She wasn't quite sure what to think. "I actually lost count after the fourth time because I was having a lot of fun," Kristen admitted, "and I thought you did it just because."

"Kristen, if I was dancing with you just because, I would have only danced with you once. Not as many times as I did."
He stood still for a moment, his arms still crossed over his chest as he looked at her. Was she angry with him for not asking her? He was a guy, and he was dense, and he didn't realize. That wasn't really his fault.
"Kristen..." he trailed off, but took a couple steps towards her, wondering when she was going to try to run away again.
