Her door was open and for some reason that amused him. Smiling he leaned in the open frame and waited for her to notice him. It had been ages since he had seen Angelique and the last time he did, she did not have this office. He was proud of her for accomplishing what she had, and that along with amusement was brightly apparent in his eyes.
"Nice office." he said with that same amusment in his tone. He had wondered what his reappearance might do in the department. He saw a lot of new faces that was for sure, but some people remembered him, and he had felt good being remembered and if he wasn't mistaken, he had been fondly missed.

Angelique looked up at the sound of his voice. Although she was currently suffering from her daily 3:00 headache, the sight of him was enough to bring a slight smile to her face. She didn't know Grayson well, but she knew him enough to be glad to see him.
"Grayson Steele," she said, shaking her head. "Well, well... what brings you back to your old stomping grounds?"

He raised a brow, " All in good time St. Clare." he smiled at her, he didn't want to get to business yet, which was unusual for him, he'd rather have a few pleasantries, perhaps he had mellowed out in the past few years. Merlin knew he needed patience with Brooklyn on his hands.
"Ah, a moment." he said suddenly remembering something, he ducked out of the office turned and picked up a velvet sack outside the door, "My mother always said that when visiting one should always bring a gift." he set the bag down on her desk. It was a decanter of good firewhiskey."
He chuckled a bit, " You won't take exception I hope, to the fact that I wasn't quite expecting you to be sitting where you are." It had been her predecessor that he bought the liquor for, "But it is damned good, beg your pardon, to see a familiar face in any case. Congratulations by the way."
Grayson didn't know how long Angelique had been head auror. When he removed himself from the scene so many years back, it had been too painful to keep up with the changes, but he was certain that the woman had deserved it in any case.

Firewhiskey sounded good right about then. She now understood why Vincent had spent most of his time working undercover in the Hog's head when he had this job. Any time spent away from the office, especially if it was in the vicinity of alcohol, would have to be a relief.
"Thank you," she said, accepting the gift with a smile. "I was a little surprised I was selected for the job myself. And to tell the truth, I'm beginning to wonder why I ever wanted it in the first place. But thanks. Have a seat, why dont you?"

Grayson nodded and took the seat across the desk. He had been there many times. So many things reminded him of his "glory" days and he felt the anticipation full force. He realized in starting this new case that he had moved on from the tragedy so long ago. If it was possible to move on... he wasn't sure it was. Every now and then when he couldn't help it, he'd think about his wife and his child and grief unlike anything he had ever known would strike him down.
But he realized he didn't associate that grief with this office anymore.
"Rough going?" he asked.

Angelique let out a slight laugh. "You could say that," she said. "One of my aurors was killed about a month ago, his entire family is still out on bereavement leave, his partner is falling apart and, oh, someone tried to kill her right here in the middle of the office the other day. I'm still trying to investigate the Hogsmeade attack and every day I am swamped with angry letters from citizens who think they can do my job better than I can. But other than that, everything's positively peachy. And you?"

"That sounds about..." he gave her a soft smile and a relaxed look, " I am sorry about your auror, however." he said shaking his head, it was tragic of course, but they all knew the job, knew what could come of it. They all took the risks, he had taken them with his family in the picture and he had lost, it was a damned shame.
"I've been rusticating in New York." he prevaricated.
