The battle inside Geoffrey continued for a minute, and, for a quick second, Geoffrey was actually able to regain control. He lowered his wand and took a step toward Riley, on the floor with Ted. But then the curse took over again and he raised his wand again, his hand steady and unwavering.
And then he was tackled from behind. He cried out and tried to fight the attacker, keeping his wand just out of her grasp. "Let go," he said blandly. "I have to do this."

The smarter thing to do would havebeen to grab her own wand and stun the man but she was unable to do so, plus it was in her mind to capture the target first, and only use drastic measures later. Bodily harm however she had no qualms against.
"I don't think so." Kate wasn't very large so her tackle didn't do much to him, but she knew some maneuvers to bring him down, she was simply hoping someone else was doing something about the situation. Instead she kicked out against the back of his knees in order to force him to the ground then continued to reach for his wand.

Ted stayed on the ground, acting as a shield for Riley. It didn't dawn on him that he was making it so that he would have to die first before anyone could get to Riley, and Andi would have probably killed him herself for it. He was just relying on an office full of Aurors to handle the situation. Really, Riley was lucky she was here. There were a lot of well trained people for situations like this.
His arms were around her, and he was promising her it would be all right. It scared him, though, that she wasn't moving. Was he too late, and the curse hit her? He couldn't check right now. Not until Geoffrey was taken down.

Seeing Geoffrey come into the office made Hayden jump off Riley's desk to greet him, but seeing Geoff's wand out made him start to reach for his own.
Before he had time to react, Geoffrey had fired the killing curse at Riley. Something wasn't right. "Geoffrey," Hayden said after he started to point his wand at his cousin. He didn't really want to hurt him, but he had to protect Riley too. Ted was a good man at blocking Riley, and Hayden knew to thank him after this was over.
As Kate attempted to bring him down, so many thoughts were in his mind. "I'm sorry Geoff," Hayden murmured. "Watch out." He said that more so Kate wouldn't be in the way and then fired the stunning spell in his direction.

Geoffrey was already on the ground, having been taken down by Kate's blow to the back of the knees. Still, he held on to his wand and was struggling against Kate, even though his movements were still sort of slow and robotic. His hand, still holding his wand, was up in the air and that was what Hayden's spell struck.
Immediately, he felt the sting of the stunning spell, then went limp, falling back on the floor. His wand clattered out of his hand and rolled a short distance away as he lay on the floor, unable to move.
Deep inside, the little voice in the back of Geoffrey's brain was breathing a sigh of relief.

Riley's scream had attracted the attention of most of the Aurors who were still in the office this late, and Kevin, being new, figured he shouldn't add extra hands to the choas.
So he went to Angelique, banging on her office door. It seemed like they had everything under control, but she would want to know what was going on in her department, wouldn't she?
"Ms. St Claire!" He said, knocking again.

As he went limp so did Kate in exhaustion. She took a few moments before pushing him away angrily, "What the hell is going on? How did this psycho get in here?" Still breathing heavily she got to her feet and retrieved her wand. She looked around for Angelique then settled on Ted and Riley, " Are you guys alright?"

Ted heard Geoffrey hit the ground (or someone hit the ground, he wasn't looking to be sure) but he heard Hayden yell the stunning spell, and a wand hitting the ground.
He finally let go of Riley and turned around, assessing the events he had missed. Geoffrey was down for the count, which meant the threat was gone.
"Get help," he said to Kate, his voice low and the smile he usually wore replaced by a serious look. Finally, worriedly, he turned to Riley.
She was sitting up, knees tucked into her chest, and her eyes clenched shut... but she was alive. Obviously shaken up, but alive, and that was the important thing.

Reduced to fetching maid, sure, just as soon as she could catch her breath. She glanced at Hayden to make sure someone still had a wand on Geoffrey before she left to go get Angelique.
When face to face with the woman she barked out, "We've got a situation, someone just made an attempt on Neves' life."

Angelique had been on a floo conference with Vincent and some representatives from other Ministrys when all of this began. Her first clue that anything was going on didn't come until Kevin began banging on the door, and was then joined by Kate.
Sensing something serious, she ended the conference abruptly and went straight to the door. "What in Godric's name is going on out here?" she demanded.
Kate quickly answered the question with her loud, harsh reply. Someone had just tried to kill Riley. Angelique didn't even bother to respond, she took off at a run.
"What happened here?" she asked, trying to assess the situation. On the floor was a face she recognized; he was close with Riley and came to pick her up nearly every day after work. He had tried to kill Riley? This didn't make sense.

Ted sat down heavily, putting his arms around Riley as Angelique arrived on the scene. He figured that he should be the one too explain, though everyone who now gathered all looked sort of shell shocked. Riley hadn't even opened her eyes yet.
"He came in and pulled his wand on Riley. He fired the killing curse," he said, his eyes meeting Angelique's. "But he wouldn't... something's not right."
Everything was wrong about this. He just wasn't entirely sure what. "Hayden stunned him."

Kate wasn't shell shocked, she was pissed off, how dare someone come to them here of all places.
"What do we do with him?" she asked annoyed but still professional. Her wand was in her hand but not directly pointed at the man on the floor, she'd be quicker to action this time.
"Does she need medical attention?"

Veronica had missed all of the action. She had been down the hall in the MLE, talking with Sean and Dan about some work issues. When she was done, however, she headed back to the Auror office and nearly tripped on the limp form or Arthur Weasley, sprawled out in the hallway.
"Arthur?" she cried, dropping to her knees to check on her friend. She checked him over quickly and realized that he'd been Stunned. She ran into the auror office, noticing another body on the floor and everyone gathered around.
"Um, did you know that Arthur Weasley is lying unconcious in the hallway?" she said.

"No," Ted said, "Riley's fine. He needs the attention. Something is definitely very wrong."
Just after that, Veronica came in, and her news hit him hard. Arthur... had he tried to stop Geoffrey, gotten in his way?
"Ronnie," he said, trying to catch her attention above everyone else now gathered around. "Is Arthur alive?" He wouldn't know what to do if Arthur had gotten caught in the crossfire.

Veronica caught his eye and nodded quickly. "Yeah, he seems fine. I think he's just been Stunned. He probably should be checked out at St. Mungo's, just to be sure, though."
She glanced around, at the figure on the floor and everyone gathered around. "Do I even want to know what happened here? Or should I just send for a medical team to take these two to St. Mungo's?"

Ted breathed a sigh of relief. "Get a medical team," he said, just feeling like he should take charge. He didn't hear anyone else doing it, and he was a little hyped on adrenaline. "Maybe for three. And warn them that one of them is dangerous."
He was rethinking that maybe Riley needed some attention. She wasn't responding to anyone around her, and maybe someone just to check her out wouldn't be a bad idea.
But Geoffrey and Arthur certainly needed attention.

Veronica nodded quickly. "Will do," she replied.
She didn't know what was going on, but right now, that didn't matter to her. It was more important to make sure the situation was under control and that all issues were taken care of. Angelique was there, and Ted seemed to be keeping a cool head about him, so that was good enough for her. She could sort out the details later.
She took off to send a message to St. Mungo's.

While Veronica and Ted were talking, Angelique bent down to examine Geoffrey. He'd been Stunned, she already knew that. But the whole situation didn't make sense and she was trying to understand it. Like anyone else in the Auror department, she'd seen Geoffrey come to get Riley nearly every day. He was a sweet, friendly guy... a good person. Why in bloody hell would he try to kill Riley?
"OK, explain this to me one more time," she said, looking straight at Ted. He seemed to be the one who was keeping a cool head about the situation, and she was rather impressed with him for it. "Isn't he Riley's friend? I see him in here so often, he's practically one of us. Why would he try to kill her?"

Ted nodded, his arms still around Riley. "Yeah, he's her friend. I don't know how close they are, but it seems like they're friends, right?" He glanced at Hayden. Hayden seemed like he had grown closer to Riley since Roland's death, and he might know better, but Ted was trying to be helpful.
"And I don't know why he would attack Riley, or Arthur, but when he came in-"
Riley shuddered in his arms, and he shut up quickly, just re-emphasizing that something was just wrong.

Hayden was still in shock, but when Ted looked his way, he nodded numbly. "He's her best friend. Since Hogwarts, I think."
He was thinking about the plan that Riley had to go after Roland's killers. She'd only told two people, him and Geoffrey. There was just no way he would betray Riley. She trusted him completely, she'd said so herself. She'd told the two of them because he was Roland's best friend, and Geoffrey was hers. Geoffrey wasn't exactly related to Hayden, but they often saw each other at Ferrera family parties. And this just wasn't like him.
"There was something... not right. He wasn't acting like himself."
