All the couplely things going on around them was something that Hayden tried to avoid. It wasn't that he was jealous of anyone. The mushy stuff just sometimes made him shudder.
"We're actually waiting for Geoffrey but thanks for the offer," he answered. "We're supposed to be meeting him here and he says its supposed to be about 20 minutes, but who knows if it'll take less time or not." He gave a shrug. "Maybe we could take that offer some time soon?" Hayden was trying to be nice in return. "A lunch or something? You know to just get anyway from the so called food here?"

It sort of felt like he was sleepwalking through a dream. Geoffrey moved mechanically down the hall and towards the lift. The same thought kept running through his head: Kill Riley.... Kill Riley...
A couple of his friends waved to him, but he stared right past them, his eyes not even seeing. He was totally focused on what he was doing. He had to get to the lifts. He had to get to the Auror office. He had to kill Riley.
He was so focused on these unbelievable thoughts that he didn't even see the pretty blonde as he brushed right past her.

The day had been pretty long. Shelly seemed to start talking to her more. Sometimes that was a good thing, but today was very busy and it seemed like Shelly would not shut up. Being the nice person she was, Alison kept her mouth closed and just dealt with it while she tried to work. The next time however, she might not be so nice.
When it was time to get off, Alison pretty much ran out of the office but not before someone stopped her and asked if she could take something to another office. Sighing, she agreed and took the envelope to the correct office. On her way out, she noticed Geoffrey just walk by her. He seemed to be looking straight ahead and she hadn't talked to him at all today. "Geoffrey," Alison called hoping that she could catch him before he left.

Geoffrey didn't even stop or turn around. "Can't talk, gotta go," he said, his voice sounding wooden and hollow.
He kept going and walked to the lifts. There were so many people around, waiting for the elevators, but most people were going up, and he wanted to go down. He ignored everyone and pressed the button to wait for the elevator to come, then stood there, staring blankly ahead with his hands in his pockets.

She stared blankly after him. There was something off. He usually didn't just brush by her, he always spoke. Alison had a confused look on her face. He didn't even look back. She swallowed. He would have told her if anything was wrong. Right?
Alison was frozen to her spot, biting her lower lip. What was going on? Seeing that he had to wait on the lift, and it happened to be the same way she was going, Alison made her way toward him. "Whats wrong," she asked getting a little closer to him.

He didn't look at her. In the state he was in, he barely even recognized her. His whole being was focused on Riley, and the spell that was controlling him would not allow anything to distract or deter him from his mission. Even the little voice that was screaming at him in the back of his head had no effect.
"Nothing's wrong," he said blandly. "Everything's fine. I have to go."
The lift opened, and he stepped into it, pressing the button to take him to the Auror department.

At his words, and the fact that he didn't even look at her, not even a look from the corner of his eye, Alison stood frozen again to her spot. People pushed past her to get on the lift, but she didn't move. Her eyes were still staring at the person who just brushed by her.
A frown appeared on her face. Had she done anything wrong to cause him to just do his best to ignore her? Pondering the question, the lift's doors closed and down it went without her. She shook her head and tried to regain herself as she pressed the button for the next trip.

There was a moment, however brief, when Geoffrey was standing in the lift, that the little voice in the back of his head started to scream louder to stop what he was doing. His finger hovered over the button as he fought a war inside himself. The compulsion that he couldn't control, but seemed so wrong was taking over him, but he was trying to fight back. In the end, the force that was controlling him won out and he pressed the button for level two.
The elevator stopped a few times, with a few more people getting in each time, then getting off on the next floor. By the time he reached the second floor, he was alone except for one person who kept yammering on about his day, as if Geoffrey cared. If he had been in control of himself, he probably would have. But not now.
Stepping off the lift, he started down the hall and headed toward the auror office, nearly colliding with Arthur Weasley.

"Oof!" said Arthur, trying to steady himself. "Watch where you're... Geoffrey?"
Geoffrey had become a familiar sight on the second floor these days. Every day he came to pick up Riley and take her home. Arthur thought it was really sweet how so many people, including Geoffrey and Hayden, were all rallying to help Riley through this difficult time. All the same, she did not look well at all. He felt sorry for her, but he never really got a chance to talk to her anymore.

Geoffrey pushed past the red-haired man, who, in his addled state, he barely recognized. Normally, he and Arthur were friendly, although not exactly close friends. But they got along well enough, both of them being very easy-going men.
"Can't talk, gotta go," he said again, charging forward.

Something was off. Geoffrey never hesitated to give a friendly greeting or even stop for a chat. Right now, he was being downright.... rude. It wasn't right. But he made the wrong assumption.
"Hey, wait a second," he said, moving forward and grabbing Geoffrey by the arm. "What's going on? Is everything OK? There's not something wrong with Riley, is there?"
As Geoffrey turned around to face him, however, Arthur was struck by the odd, vacant look in his eyes. He thought surely that something must have really been wrong.

But the force controlling Geoffrey would not tolerate being stopped in this way. Even if it was just Arthur, being concerned about a friend, the hand on his arm pulling him back was an attempt to stop him, and that couldn't happen. Magical forces would stop him, but Arthur's hand on his arm was unacceptable.
Geoffrey pulled out his wand and pointed it at Arthur. "Stupefy!"

Arthur's eyes widened as Geoffrey pulled out his wand and aimed it at him. But he never got the chance to protest as the Stunning Spell struck him full on the chest. He felt a shock of pain, then numbness. His legs gave out on him, and he fell over backwards onto the hard linoleum, unable to move.

Arthur now out of the way, Geoffrey charged forward. The little voice in the back of his head was screaming, but the cries were ignored. He just wasn't strong enough to fight the curse. Instead it compelled him to move forward, repeating his horrible mission over and over in his head.
Kill Riley Neves. Kill Riley Neves. And make her scream.
He turned a corner and was just a few feet away from the door to the Auror office.

Ted's eyes had shifted to Riley as he nodded at Hayden, checking to see what her thoughts were on a lunch. Everyone knew she wasn't eating much lately, and social get togethers were too taxing on her right now. Everything just felt like it was too much right now.
She shrugged. "We'll see."
It was just a moment later when she saw Geoffrey round the corner into the office, and for him, she gave a genuine smile, albeit a weak one. "Hey," she called out, getting to her feet. "That was quick. I thought you were going to be longer."

Geoffrey didn't smile. For someone like Geoff, who always had a smile on his face, this alone should have been suspicious. The blank stare should have been obvious as well.
"Hi, Riley," he said in the same wooden tone, completely lacking in its usual bright, friendliness.
Kill Riley Neves.
There was a brief hesitation, where the real Geoffrey tried to wrestle back control, but he simply wasn't strong enough. He pulled out his wand and pointed it at her. "I'm sorry. Avada Kedavra!"

If Riley hadn't caught the look in Geoffrey's eyes, Ted did. They were blank, emotionless. It was like he wasn't even looking at her. Geoffrey was almost becoming an honorary Auror as often as they saw him around lately, and he never looked at Riley like that.
Ted was suspicious, but he often felt his Auror instincts kick in in any situation. He was on the alert, and his eyes picked up the movement of Geoffrey reaching for his wand.
"Riley...."
He started forward, following Riley's steps. It was the apology that probably saved Riley's life, giving Ted just two more seconds to reach out and grab her. He pulled her to the ground, throwing himself in front of her as a shield at the same time, just hoping someone else in the office jumped to action. No one was going to die here.

Riley was not suspicious, however. She noticed the frown and the vacant stare, and her own smile slipped. She wanted to know what was wrong, or what had happened, but then things just happened so quickly.
"Geoff, what-"
He was sorry? And then his wand was on her, and still she couldn't believe he would do anything to her. This was Geoffrey, afterall. Geoffrey, who held her while she cried about her brother and missing her father and missing Roland.
She barely even registered that he clearly stated the killing curse. Geoffrey couldn't...
And then she couldn't breathe, and she realized that all of this was going to end... that for some reason, she was going to die by her best friend's hand.
And then she was on the ground. Somewhere between being on her feet and being covered by Ted's body, she had screamed.

Because of Ted's quick actions, the curse sailed past where she had been standing and struck the wall at the far end of the office, leaving a scorch mark.
Well, he'd made her scream. That was part of the mission, right? He'd just have to try again. And if Ted Tonks insisted on being in the way, then so be it. He'd have to kill them both.
No, stop this.... it's wrong! cried the little voice in the back of Geoffrey's mind. Please, I don't want to do this....
His hand shook as he tried desperately to fight the effects of the curse.

Kate saw from a distance just barely what was happening, her mind was too wrapped up in her case to notice what she might have usually noticed earlier, at least she would blame herself for not noticing it. She just had barely enough time to process as it was, before she hurled herself on top of Geoffrey in an attempt to knock his wand away.
"Somebody get Angelique, we've got a hostile here!" Who the hell would be crazy enough to attack inside the ministry, not only that, but why did we let them in?
