Geoffrey's smile was sad. They had only dated for a few weeks, when Riley was in her seventh year. And while it had felt comfortable and easy to hug and hold hands, when it came to other things, it felt strange and awkward. He still remembered their first kiss--it had been the first one for both of them--and the awkwardness of it.
"Because kissing you felt like kissing my sister," he said, shrugging. "We were just too close already. I think we tried it too late. And for the wrong reasons. We did it just because we were there and it was easier than getting to know some other person."

"Is that why you tried it?" Riley asked before she could stop herself. He was right, of course. Kissing him had felt like kissing her brother, and they both laughed about it at the time. Still, she wouldn't have traded that first kiss for anything.
But she wanted to date him because he was the first person to make her feel like she could take on the world. Not because it was easy. Or maybe she had. It didn't matter anymore anyway.
"I like where we are now though, Geoff. I didn't meant to imply that I wasn't."

Geoffrey shook his head. "No, that's not why I tried it," he said honestly.
He reached over and squeezed her hand lightly. "I tried it because I was curious. About what it would be like. And because there was no one else in the world I wanted to share my first kiss with other than you. It wasn't perfect... But it was still special."
He shifted position, so that he was staring up at the ceiling. "Riley, you know that no matter what the future really holds for us, I'll be there for you. I'll never give up on you."

"It was perfect, Geoffrey, for what it was. I wouldn't have had it be any other way." But it was special, and she would always remember it. She wondered, if Roland were with them, how he would react to knowing Geoff had been her first kiss. Or seeing them like this. He'd been jealous of Geoffrey at Christmas.
But it didn't matter.
She smiled and squeezed his hand back. "I'm here for you, too. Always, no matter what happens. You can't get rid of me."

"That sounds good to me," Geoffrey said. "As long as we have each other, I really think we'll be fine."
That was truly how Geoffrey felt. Things looked back right now, but they had to get better, right? The important thing was to hold onto the people that you loved, to be there for each other no matter what. Geoffrey was lucky to have a close family and a best friend that would do anything for him.
"It's getting late. We should probably get dressed for dinner."

Riley was quiet for a moment, and then she sighed, pulling away from Geoffrey.
"Yeah. I think I'm going to take a quick shower. I'll be ready in time though," she told him, getting to her feet. There was a frown on her face, but she didn't know why entirely. "Come get me for dinner, okay? I don't really want to go down by myself. You have a large family." she smiled at him over her shoulder as she reached Geoffrey's door. "Thanks... for this."

Geoffrey sat up and sighed softly. He really would have preferred to stay here with her, talking and dreaming of a better future. But he knew his family, and he was expected to be at dinner unless he was gravely ill. It was best to just succumb to it, or there would be someone banging on the door, demanding that they get down there at once.
"All right," he replied. "I'll come get you in half an hour, OK?"
He gave her a slight smile. "And you never have to thank me for this. That's what best friends are for."

"Half an hour it is," Riley said, nodding. Like Geoffrey, she would have liked to stay there and just shut out reality for a bit longer. But that never really solved anything, did it?
She gave him a little smile, leaning in his doorframe for a moment. "I'd be lost without you, you know that? I know I don't have to thank you, but I do, because I appreciate you every day. You make things easier. And better."
She gave him another smile and closed the door behind her as she left to get ready.
