It had been said that she had problems with authority, but the truth was her ex-captain was rather fond of her, and had kept her out of trouble for as long as he could, but the last stunt she pulled put her in danger and pulling her off the case was the only way he could think to get her to listen.
That, and getting her as far away from the office as possible, there was too much drama within the office, and Kate's presence was going to result into something far more serious. It was hard but he let her go, and thus she was standing in front of Angelique's office for new orders.

It seemed almost impossible to imagine, but several good things had come out of Roland's death. The first was that the press, along with the public, had changed opinion to favor the Ministry a little bit more. Now that they had lost one of their own, they were getting a little more sympathy from the public. In addition, the American Ministry had agreed to send over another Auror, and although this one would probably be a more direct replacement for Roland, Kit was the one who had taken that bullet. The new one, arriving today, would probably get a better reception.
At the knock on the door, Angelique looked up from the pile of paperwork that seemed to be multiplying on her desk. That must have been her now.
"Come in," she called, silently wondering if it wouldn't be a bad idea to put a revolving door on her office.

Kate entered the office and with a true detective's eye saw the situation at hand, "I don't mean to disturb you. I'm Kate." she knew her way around an office and didn't need to be given a tour or the newbie treatment, in fact wherever police work was done, it seemed she was an old hand. She was sure Angelique had enough on her plate.

Angelique nodded. "Hello, Kate," she said. With a sweep of her hand, she gestured to the chair across from her desk. "Please have a seat. I'm Angelique."
She had received a whole file about the woman, and while she could have consulted it for information about Kate, she preferred to assess the woman herself. She was a no-nonsense sort, serious and professional. She wasn't sure the woman had much of a sense of humor, and she clearly didn't suffer fools lightly.
"As it happens, I have just received a new case to assign you to. A particularly gruesome murder took place last night in Diagon Alley. Since such cases seem to be a specialty of yours, I think it's only fitting that you be assigned to it."

Kate let out an unusual whoosh of air, well unusual for her anyway. People seldom surprised her and Angelique had. The words particularly gruesome murder had Kate beyond intrigued and eager to start chipping away at the case, but the fact that Angelique would hand it over to the newcommer was surprising. While her file indicated a series of brilliant arrests through even better detective work, it was also filled, Kate was sure, with all the lines she had crossed in the past, every hoop she had jumped through or burned down to make sure she got the guy. She didn't always follow the rules and that made her a liability.
She understood this, but she also understood that the reason they kept her on was because she got the job done.
Still her surprise was momentary as the intrigue came back to her, she could appreciate that Angelique had jumped to the chase, " Who's on scene?" she asked since she assumed other officers were sent out to inspect what had been done already, she would be talking to these people and hoping that they didn't disturb her crime scene.

Angelique understoof rulebreakers all too well. Before she'd become the one who enforced the rules, she had been the one breaking them herself. And then there were others in her department who viewed the job itself as more important than following the rules. Of course... one of them had got himself killed for it.
"So far, just the MLE," Angelique replied. "They're securing the scene and taking care of the body. Sean and Dan Leviner. They're two of the best in the MLE. You'll have to check with them on the details and they'll give you a full report of the crime scene."

The tinge of pride in Angelique's voice made Kate feel a bit more secure that she wasn't dealing with idiots. Now she was itching to get out of her chair and see to business. She had a peculiar feeling in the back of her mind that things were going to be different here...better, and yet she missed home...if she could call it that.
Kate didn't really have a home, didn't really have anything to miss, she refused to get close to people. Get attached to things. If it hadn't simply pissed her off that she was forced to move, she might not have even noticed it. That whole philosophy of her life needed revision she was sure, and probably a good dose of therapy but she wasn't going to go in too deep, there was a case to solve after all.
Nodding she began to stand up, " Where am I headed?" she asked, getting straight to business, she'd need to check out the crime scene herself.

Angelique was pleased that the woman was ready to get to work. And because of the immediacy of the situation, she was willing to forgo the whole training and orientation and showing her to her desk and let her get started right away.
"Diagon Alley. There is a club, right on the corner between Diagon Alley and Knockturn Alley, called Enchanted. That's where the body was found. Go there, check out the scene, talk to the Leviners, and when you're finished, come back here. I have a few things I need to give you on our policies, and I have to show you to your desk."

Finally Kate smiled at the woman, as if she had passed some invisible test that Kate hadn't even intended to give, she nodded in the affirmative. Angelique not only gave her a good case, one that Kate intended to sink her teeth into, one that would require her skills and make her actually work hard, but she was willing to forgo formality in order to get to the bottom of things, in order to stop this murderer, and for that Kate found respect, and perhaps a hint of admiration.
"Diagon Alley." she repeated, she familiarized herself with the town as much as possible before she came into the office, and not everything was new since she had lived in London previously, so she knew where she was headed, but she didn't know of this new club. With any luck it wouldn't be too hard to find, and in either case she could simply cast a spell to help her get there.
She walked to the door took one more look at Angelique and nodded before she was gone to see to the case, feeling a skip in her step, and perhaps hope in her heart. It didn't take much to tear her away from her old life, apparently there wasn't that much she had left behind.
