Kate had yet to meet with Angelique St. Claire who she learned was the head of the Auror department. She wasn't too happy to have been transferred in the middle of a case but this was temporary. At least that's what she told herself.
She eyed the department with a mixture of cool haughtier and a detective's keen roving speculation. She simply vibed for others to give her a wide bearth, though not everyone took the hint as another auror paused to make with the introductions.

Kit was, unfortunately, already notorious for her ability to stick her foot in her mouth or to barge in where she was not quite wanted. Maybe she simply didn't notice negative vibes, or just didn't care. At any rate, it was not surprising to anyone who had known her since her arrival that she was the one who walked up to Kate and stuck her hand out to her.
"Finally, I'm not the newest person here," she said in her obvious American accent. "I swear, this place is not easy on new people, so maybe now that you're here, they'll all stop looking at me like I'm some sort of alien creature. Welcome, by the way. I'm Kit."

Kate glanced at the girl's hand then responded accordingly, "Kate." she said shaking the girl's hand briefly.
It would have worked out well then were she to be considered an alien, she had no plans to stay there, and she had even less ambition to become friends with anyone. If it happened it happened, but Kate could be rough on all the edges, it took a lot to see past her brash behavior.
After introducing herself she remained silent, perhaps Kit would leave her alone.

No such luck. Kit liked to talk, even though her big mouth very frequently got her into trouble. Half of the department still thought she was replacing Roland, so they wouldn't even talk to her. And here was a new person, an American like her. How could she not want to talk to her?
"Nice to meet you, Kate. Ha, that's kinda funny... Kit and Kate. My name's short for Katharine, you know, like Hepburn? But I just... wasn't a Kate. My dad used to call me Kitten, and it got shortened to Kit. So, you're American, right? It's good not to be the only Yank around here... I'm still trying to learn all that wacky British slang."

Kate was whatever they wanted her to be, she got transfered back and forth between continents often that she could adopt the accent of wherever she happened to be at the time, it was only a matter of time in fact before her British accent came back.
" I suppose, I've been all over really." she said and since she managed to speak more than five words some of her accent came out. She realized she had been listening to "British slang" all day and it was getting to her. Kit simply reminded her of America, and her office back there. The case they pulled her from, damn Erickson. If it weren't for him she never would have been transferred in the first place.

Well, she may have been American, but the woman had that British sort of "stiff upper lip" thing going on, that was for sure. Honestly, having a conversation with anyone around here was like pulling teeth. She hated it.
"Well, it's nice to meet you," she said, feeling a bit deflated. "I don't know if they told you, but the department's kind of been in a rut since one of the aurors died a few weeks ago. Half his family is still on leave... it's just not been a happy place to be. I hope it goes better for you."

"It's not that we're unkind to newcomers," Ted said, having heard just a little of their conversation. They were standing close to his desk, so he couldn't help but hear them. Ted was outgoing, and he did feel sorry for Kit. Her timing had been unfortunate, but not her fault.
"It's just what you said in front of his partner right off the bat... and you'll understand that the department's loyalties are with her, right now. Still, I'm sorry you're having a difficult time of it, Kit. It will get better for you. Just let me know if I can help."
To the new girl, Kate, he smiled warmly. "We're not all the scary. I'm Ted, by the way."

Kate saw the girl almost visibly deflate and inwardly she rolled her eyes. It wasn't really Kit whom she was annoyed with but rather her old colleagues. "Thanks." she returned. She felt perhaps a little twinge of conscience about her rough behavior but it was over soon enough.
When Kit went on to explain one of the aurors died Kate's manner changed almost unnoticibly, then she sighed, it happened. People died in this industry all the time, you would have thought everyone would have been used to it by now.
When the other man joined in, Kate's natural curiosity rose over what Kit might have said to the deceased's partner. It didn't take a detective to figure out that it was probably something brash. When Ted introduced himself it was only polite courtesy that had her responding, "Kate."

Kit let out a breath. She was never going to live down that remark. She truly did regret it, and she never would have said it if she had known the truth of what happened. And the woman whose name she now knew was Riley Neves, well, she was never going to forgive that comment. Ted was one of the few people who'd been nice to her; Ted and his wife, Andromeda. And of course, her partner, Kaden.
"Yeah, I know," Kit said, looking to Ted. "I just wish she'd understand I didn't mean it."

"It's a pleasure, Kate. I assume you're looking for Angelique's office? She's just down that way. You can't miss her."
He smiled sympathetically at Kit. "She knows you didn't mean it. Truthfully, she's probably not even angry at you. She's just angry.... and you gave her the outlet. She really shouldn't have even been at that meeting anyway. You had no way of knowing."
Ted understood. He also understood what it was like to be the outcast Auror. He didn't like it... not at all, and he knew it couldn't be easy on her. Just like it wouldn't be easy on Kate.
"You know... we should all go out for drinks. The whole department.... I think we could use it."

Kit gave a wry smile. That sounded like a good idea to her, although, admittedly, anything that involved drinking sounded like a good idea to her. "Yeah, maybe I could buy the first round or something. Then maybe I'd make a few more friends..." She gave him a wink.
"I went to this cool bar last week... Stu's? Really good drinks there. I wouldn't mind going back, actually."
Looking back to Kate, she said, "It was nice meeting you... I hope we get a chance to talk again."

Kate blinked a few times, she was following the conversation but it was a display of comraderie that she wasn't used to. She nodded once, "Down this way?" she asked taking a few steps in the direction of the office she already knew to be Angelique's. She didn't think she'd be going for drinks with them at any rate, as for making friends in the department she really couldn't care less.
"Thanks." she remarked over her shoulder at Ted, then gave a nod toward Kit before knocking on Angelique's door.

Kit watched as Kate walked away, then turned back to Ted. "Great. I think she hates me, too. One of these days, I'm gonna learn not to run my mouth off all the time. But not today, apparently."
She shook her head. "Oh, well, what can you do? Anyway, let me know if you want to do that, Ted. I'd love to see you and Andromeda there... you two make the cutest couple."

Ted waved off Kate's behavior. "She doesn't seem like a very talkative person. I highly doubt it's you. Your problem, Kit, is that you worry too much. Actually, you're a lot like Roland... Riley's partner?" As if the name didn't already make her cringe everytime she heard it. "He was very... abrasive. Kind of like you... and you see how well liked he was. It's just going to take time."
He dropped a file on his desk. Personally, he liked Kit. Quite a lot. "You know what, it's final. Stu's. Does Thursday work for you? I don't like really like any of the bars around here on Fridays, but we could do that, too."
A faint blush tinted his cheeks when he said they made a cute couple, and he shrugged. "Thanks. It's why I married her."

Kit broke into a grin. "Well, abrasive tends to be a little more acceptable in men than in women," she said with a wry grin. "All the same, I'll take that as a compliment. I bet he thought everyone hated him, too. Although he probably also didn't really care if they did."
She rather liked Ted. it was hard to imagine that anyone wouldn't let the guy, actually. He was personable and friendly, with an easygoing sense of humor. She knew nothing of the recent scandals involving him, which had now evaporated amidst other gossip.
The main gossip around the office still seemed to be about Roland and Riley. Specifically, people were watching Riley, as if waiting for a breakdown. The general consensus was that they had been in love. In which case, Riley was never going to like Kit. She'd always see her as his replacement.
"Thursday sounds great," she said, smiling. "Put the word out... invite anyone you can think of. I just want to kick back and break some of the ice around here."

((OOC... sorry we kind of hijacked your thread, Sam)
Ted nodded. "Will do. I know you probably don't know that many people around here, but invite whoever you like."
His smile grew, a thought coming to mind that, had circumstances been different, would have amused him. "You should invite Riley."
He knew for a fact that Riley wouldn't come. She really hadn't been talking to anyone, save a conversation of two with Andromeda, and then Hayden and Geoffrey. Otherwise, she just stayed away from everyone. But he thought it might be a good idea if Kit tried to straighten things out between them. Maybe Riley would always see her as Roland's replacement, but she shouldn't hate Kit. It wasn't her fault. It was no one's fault that Roland died.

Kit glanced in the direction of Riley's desk and frowned. Despite her rough edges, Kit actually had a good heart, and she felt terrible about what Riley was going through and wished she could help in some way. But she also knew that there was a very good chance that she'd just end up blurting out something stupid that would only make Riley hate her more. Still, it was worth a try, maybe.
"I guess I can try, but she'll probably tell me to get lost," she said. "I can't say I blame her, after what I said at the meeting..."
