Vanessa sat on the deep red loveseat and-after kicking off her shoes and socks- tucked her legs under herself. She set her book on her lap and began reading up on Magical Creatures. She was still a little rusty in that subject. She twirled her hair with her hand absentmindedly. A sigh escaped her lips and she turned the page. This subject was already starting to bore her. No wonder she was rusty and having trouble paying attention in class. It was boring to her.
She shifted position to avoid her feet falling asleep. Her eyes unfocused on the book and she thought of how much she missed her parents. She secretly couldn't wait until her little brothers were old enough to join her at school. She even missed the little rascals. A smile touched her lips as she thought of their smiling faces.

The common room was quiet when Remus slipped downstairs to do some last minute studying. As usual, potions was really giving him trouble. He was going to be lucky if he even came close to a passing grade in that class. Even with all the extra credit he'd been trying to do, he was still failing. And of course, James, Sirius, and Peter weren't much help. They were only doing a tiny bit better than he was, just by sheer luck.
He sighed to himself as he walked over to one of the tables and opened up his potions book. He needed to do well on this next test, or he'd never have a chance of passing for the term.

Vanessa looked up when she saw someone come in and turned beat red instantly when she realized who it was. Remus Lupin sat just across the room from her. She'd never crushed on anyone before. And here he was sending her into hysterics. Of course, she would never admit that him.
She stole glances at him while she worked and noticed that he looked like he was...struggling. With homework maybe? She took a deep breath and tried to gather the courage to go and help. She usually did really good in her classes. She only hoped he wasn't struggling with Care of Magical Creatures, like her.
She stood up and walked over. "Hi." She said in a quiet voice. She cleared her voice to make it louder. "Mind if I sit?"

Remus didn't expect anyone to be there in the common room, so when he heard the girl's voice, he was slightly startled. He looked up quickly, but relaxed when he saw the girl. He'd seen her around, since they were in the same house and year, after all.
"Hi," he replied in his quiet voice. "Um, sure. You can sit, if you'd like. I'm just studying for the potions test."

"Potions? Need...any help?" She asked, a little nervous. She pulled out her books and leaned over her Care of Magical Creatures book. She needed to study too. This class was killing her. What did she really need to know about creatures in the real world? She ran a hand through her hair and shook her head a little. She glanced up at Remus and wondered what he was thinking.

He glanced up again, a hopeful smile on his face. He didn't really know the girl, and wasn't even entirely sure of her name. But she was cute, and she seemed very nice. "I could use some help, actually," he said. "James and Sirius are doing better than me just by luck. Or they might be cheating, I don't know. If they are, they won't admit it. But I'm failing. Are you any good at potions?"

She blushed a little and scooted closer so she could see his book. "I am a little." She admitted. "You any good in Care of Magical Creatures? Because I'm failing that. Maybe we could help eachother?" She asked, a little more comfortable. Her chest felt tight as she tried to hold a conversation with him. "I'm Vanessa by the way. We never actually met." She tucked her hair back behind her hair and took a deep breath, hoping he didn't notice the blush.

Remus smiled shyly. He was sometimes a little more brave when James and Sirius were around to urge him on. But when he was alone, some of the old shyness came back to him. "Hi, Vanessa. I'm Remus. It's nice to meet you."
He glanced down at his book again, and then shrugged. "I'm OK in Care of Magical Creatures," he said. "Much better than potions, anyway. I'm rubbish at potions. Er... I guess we could try to help each other. I really do have to get a decent grade on this next test or I'm buggered."

Vanessa smiled shyly as well and hugged her sides. Of course, she already knew his name. She wasn't going to mention that though. She was surprised at how "brave" she was being today. Normally she would never had gotten the courage to get up and talk to him. But tonight...tonight was different.
"Well, then. We better get started. We don't want you failing." She said, smiling wider. Her bright teeth showed behind her pink lips. She flung her long hair back and opened her books around her. "Where should we start first?"

Remus shrugged. Although he needed to study for the test, what he really needed was help with the practical portion of the test. That made up half of the grade and he always messed the potions up.
"Maybe we could go over the uses of mugwort in potions. And I know he's going to ask about the ingredients of the strengthening solution, and I completely messed mine up last time. Seriously, it hardened into a solid lump!"

Vanessa chuckled and turned to the right page. "Well, I don't know much about mugwort. But I do know the most important ingredient for the Strenghtening Solution." I turned the book so he could see. "Salamander blood. And it's added after the potion matures over...a few days." I explained. "You also can use pomegranate juice but that's applied later." I smiled at him and leaned back in my chair.

Remus frowned. "Ugh. I always get them mixed up. I bet that's what happened last time... I did them in the wrong order. They're the same color and all, it's hard to tell the difference."
He ran a hand through his hair. "Hey, we studied salamanders in Care of Magical Creatures, too... maybe we can take turns going over the two subjects. Like, do you remember where to find salamanders?"

She frowned realizing she had no idea. She racked her brain trying to remember but couldn't. "No." She said, shaking her head. She didn't like not knowing things. She wanted to look smart in his eyes. Not that it really mattered all that much if she didn't know, she just didn't like being stumped.

Remus smiled. He didn't think she was stupid. After all, she was helping him with his potions work, and when it came to that, he was kind of dumb. Everyone had their things that they were good at, and things they just couldn't understand.
"Salamanders are fire lizards. If you look into a small wood fire, the salamanders will crawl out of the fire."

"Oh! I should have known that!" She said and sifted through the book of potions. She noticed something that he might have forgotten. "Do you know the ingredients in....Boil Cure Potion?" She asked and held the book closer so he couldn't see. She smiled, seeing a smile on his face. He didn't seem to mind her help and that made her happy.

Remus gave her a blank look. Merlin, he was so bad at this! "Er... in boil cure potion?"
He thought for a long moment, wracking his brain. He remembered working on the boil cure potion. He'd messed it up, as usual. But he couldn't seem to remember one ingredient in it.
He burst out laughing. "No... I have no idea. You must think I'm the biggest idiot..."

Vanessa started laughing too and thought, as always, that it was contagious. "No! Of course not! We all have our weak subjects, just like we do strong ones." She flipped the page. "This one i remember because it was such a weird thing to learn about..." She skimmed over the page to make sure she got her information right. She didn't want to say the wrong thing and look like the idiot. She grinned. "The ingredients are...dried nettles, crushed snake fangs, stewed horned slugs, and porcupine quills. I think some of them are added later though." She wringled her nose remembering the smell. "Yeah, if you add one of them too soon, it can turn into an acid and burn through the cauldron. Not something you want to see happen."

Remus made a face. "Oh, yeah, now I remember. I didn't have it turn into acid, but I accidentally dropped too many of the stewed slugs into the potion and it came out as a thick, nasty sludge." He sighed. "I think that's what really gets me about potions. If you don't do it exactly the way it says in the book, you're ruined. There are so many chances to fail, and nothing really seems to go right. Add too many of this, or add it at the wrong time, and you may as well just chuck your potion out the window. I like things that have a little bit of wiggle room."

"Like what? What is your strong subject?" She asked curiously, pushing the book aside for a moment and resting her elbow on the tables edge. She placed her chin in her delicate hand and smiled at him. "And I know what you mean. It takes a while to get the hang of potions. I'm still not that good with actually making the potions. But I'm usually good at remembering them."

Remus thought for a minute. Unlike James and Sirius, he actually liked most of his classes. Potions--and history of magic--were the rare exceptions. He also didn't like astronomy, for obvious reasons. That was the reason he had opted to take Care of Magical Creatures instead; so that it wouldn't be quite so obvious that he always missed class on the nights of the full moons.
"I guess I'm best in Defense Against the Dark Arts," he replied. "I like Charms and Transfiguration, too, though."
