There was a part of Geoffrey that was almost tempted to do something crazy and impulsive. In his family, he was the most careful, methodical one. Both of his parents had gone through a reckless stage, and of course, there was Christine. His uncles, Christopher and Anthony, were known for being a biit wild as well. Next to them, Geoffrey seemed positively boring.
As he looked at Alison, a crazy thought occurred to him, but he pushed it away quicky. Still... there was something so exciting about the image that flashed through his mind.
No. No, she wouldn't want to do that. He'd just finished saying he wanted to take it slow. Why was he imagining himself whisking her away to get married? They barely knew each other! It was crazy.
He nodded slowly. "Yes. We'll take it slow."

Alison could tell that something was going through Geoffrey's head. There was something in his eyes, but she didn't pry to know. She reached for her tea cup and finished drinking what tea was in there.
"Why don't you come into the kitchen," she spoke up. "I was thinking about making those potato cakes tonight. I think that you'd like them and you can take back some with you. I've already added the bacon to the mashed potatoes, but I have to add a little more flour and then fry them." Alison gave a light smile and stood up with her tea cup in hand.

Yes, this was good. It would distract him from his crazy thoughts. If she had known what he had been thinking only moments before, she would have thought him insane. He needed to forget it, to push it down into the corner of his mind, where he could laugh about it later.
"Sound great," he said with a grin. Standing up, he followed her into the kitchen.

Alison smiled and walked into the kitchen, placing her tea cup in the sink. "Do you want anymore tea?"
It would be a good distraction to help keep Geoffrey's mind off of whatever was going on with his family and Riley. Alison wished there was more that she could do, but there wasn't anything. She pulled out a bowl from the refridgerator and then poured flour into it while she started to make the potato cakes and the frying pan started to heat up.

Geoffrey shook his head. "No, thanks." He hadn't actually finished his first cup of tea, and had left the teacup, still half-full, in the living room.
He stood close to her, trying to watch what she was doing. After she had told him about her grandmother's special recipe, he was rather anxious to see her make it. And to try it, of course.
This was good. The crazy thoughts from earlier were starting to fade from his memory.

It felt strange with another person in the kitchen with her. She was just used to Benji running around and trying to help her.
She was aware of him standing close to her, but she still concentrated on what she was doing. Once the first couple were done, she pulled out a plate and put the finished potato cakes on it. Glancing to Geoffrey, she almost laughed. Alison reached for a fork, and handed it to him. "Go ahead," she said with a smile.

Geoffrey smiled almost shyly and took the fork from her. He blew on the piece of potato cake, which was still steaming from the pan, then put it in his mouth.
It was perfect. Crispy on the outside, soft in the middle. He nodded and broke into a broad smile. "This is incredible!" he said. "Your grandmother really knew her stuff!"

"She always made them for me whenever I would go over to her house. They are especially good for breakfast." Alison gave a laugh. "Its better with left over mashed potatoes if you ask me. When you make them with fresh ones, it just seems to fall apart easier. And the good thing about them is its not hard to make and you can mix whatever you want in them."
Part of her couldn't believe that she was standing in her kitchen talking with someone about cooking. She only did that with her grandmother. Her mother wasn't the best cook in the world, nor was her father so it was always her alone in the kitchen if she was at home. However, her parents did have their specialities.

Geoffrey took the plate and fork from her and went to sit down at the table. "Well, I'm definitely impressed," he said. "Our cooks were always making us all these fancy meals and stuff, but sometimes... you just want something casual. Something warm and comforting, you know? This definitely fits that description."
Geoffrey wouldn't have thought it possible, but as he ate the little potato cake, he felt himself liking her even more. In fact, he might have been falling in love with her. Was it too soon for that?
And that was when it hit him. Yes, he was falling in love. And he couldn't even tell his best friend about it. The timing was so bad... Riley was grieving and he was falling in love.

"We never had those fancy meals," said Alison. "But then again my father was usually off on business and that was when mum always said it was alright if I experimented in the kitchen. When I was younger, before I went off to school, mum would always cook. Sometimes it wouldn't be the best stuff in the world, but it was alright." She laughed. "Then once school started, she began to go with dad on his trips, then they started to take a lot of mini vacations. We were together for half the summer, so that wasn't too bad. Dad would always say that he never wanted anything fancy, so we would always go with something simple."

Geoffrey smiled at her. "I kind of wish things had been simpler in my house when I was growing up. There were always so many of us, what with my aunt and uncles and cousins. Although Sam wasn't with us very much until recently. I think things have been even more formal since Sam moved in. It's like Uncle Edward is trying to make up for all the time he lost with her. I'm kind of glad I have a place of my own. I mean, sometimes, you just really want a hamburger, instead of roast lamb. You know?"

"It's nice that he is trying to make up for lost time, but yeah I understand completely." Alison smiled and finished up making what was left in the bowl and picked one out before taking a seat at the table.
"You know its been awhile since I had someone sitting at my kitchen table. Even if we're just talking and not really eatting a meal. I appreciate you coming by."

Geoffrey waved her off. "No, no. Thank you. I really needed someone to talk to, and you were there for me. And I appreciate that more than I can say."
He sighed and looked up at her. "You see, in my family, and with my friends... I've always been the guy that everyone goes to for advice and support and a shoulder to lean on. But with my cousin dying and everything... I just... I don't know what to do. I don't know what to say to help my sister or Riley... I don't even know how I should feel right now. So maybe I need someone I can lean on. And you were the first person I thought of."

A light smile was shown on Alison's face and she reached across the table and took his hand. "That's what I'm here for. If you need someone to talk to, I'm here. You know where you can find me almost any time of the day."
She wanted to do whatever she could for him and if that meant just being there so he could have someone to talk to, then that would not be a problem. "I can't tell you what to feel, or what could help your sister or Riley, but like I said earlier as long as you're just there it does make things a lot better than what they would be if you weren't."

Geoffrey leaned forward and kissed her quickly. He could taste the potatoes on her lips and it made him smile. "You're incredible, you know that? A lot of other girls would be jealous of me and Riley. But we're so close... she's like my sister. We've been there for each other through a lot, and I can't even imagine being without her. Of course... I can't imagine being without Roland, either. And I barely even liked him when he was alive. But really... he was actually a really good guy and I just never gave him a chance."
He sighed and ran his fingers through his hair. "This is really going to mess up my whole family. Would you believe my sister just stopped talking?"

"You two are best friends, and I don't see anything wrong with being best friends with the opposite sex. Besides, you were friends way before I met you. I could never come between you and friends are important." She smiled. Alison didn't think that she could be any kind of cruel and do anything that would pull them apart, or even attempt to.
"Just stopped talking?" Alison frowned. When she met Christine at Christmas, the girl was talkative and happy but with recent events, she could imagine the girl doing a 180. "I know its not really going to do anything, but maybe one day I could take her out somewhere? Just get her doing something?"

Geoffrey looked at her in amazement. She had to be the perfect girl. She was beautiful, she could cook, she had a puppy, she was understanding about his best friend being a girl, she was willing to help his sister... and other than her initial nervousness about seeing him again, they seemed to get along perfectly. He almost wondered what he'd done to deserve a girl so perfect.
"I think I'm in love with you," he blurted out.

Perfect? Alison knew she was far from perfect. Her cooking, she didn't think it was the best but she got by. She understood a lot of things, but there were a lot that she didn't. As for having friends, she knew it was important and it didn't matter if they were male or female. She would have more than likely turned as red as a ripe tomato if she had known that he thought that.
She had just cut another bite, and was about to stick it with her fork when she heard his words. Alison froze and looked up. In love with her? He thought he was? What was she supposed to say after that?
Her face adopted an almost embarrassed looking smile. She knew that she felt something strong for him, but was it love? Alison wasn't experienced at all in that department. Her eyes met his and said that there was some strong feeling for him too. She wasn't sure what to call it. Taking his hand, the smile was still on her face. "I'm not sure what to say," she said honestly. "Its not a bad thing, honest. I just think that, I think that I've fallen or I'm still falling for you too."

Geoffrey looked a little embarrassed, too. It was too soon, wasn't it? He'd only known her for a couple of weeks, and he was already deciding that he was falling for her? It wasn't like him to rush into things so quickly, and there was a part of him that now wanted to take his words back. But he didn't.
"It's OK," he said. "We don't have to rush things. It's just... you're really kind of amazing."

Now was the time that Alison would have almost given a tomato a run for its money in color. "Of course we don't need to rush," she said. "And thanks. You're pretty amazing too." Alison wasn't quite sure what she was getting herself into. This was all very new to her. The idea of having a relationship was foreign yet she didn't mind trying it out with him. After all, he was sweet and pretty much perfect.
"I'm new to this whole thing," she said a little shyly. "I'm not quite sure how it works."
