Jadon was a nervous wreck, in all honesty. Whatever he thought he was doing was going to end up being a mistake, he was certain of it.
But what if it wasn't? What if, somehow, he manged to save one of his sister's lives? Or one of their friends? Yes, what he wanted to do was dangerous, but he'd do anything for them.
He raised a hand to knock on Dumbledore's door, but it opened before he could touch it, and he let himself in.

As it happened, Dumbledore had stepped out for just a moment, to deal with a minor issue in the upstairs hallway. It seemed that Peeves had strewn trophies up and down the hallway, and Filch was positively livid. He wished Filch wouldn't call him in every time some minor problem occured with Filch, but he responded readily and was able to repair the damage in no time.
When he returned to his office, Albus was surprised to notice that it was not empty. He recognized Jadon Burke instantly, being the perfect image of his three younger sisters. "Jadon, hello," he said with a smile. "What can I do for you?"

Jadon was jumpy, and was startled slightly when Dumbledore returned, but tried his best to hide the fact.
"Professor Dumbledore, good morning," Jadon said, turning to see the old man. How did he go about this? He could just ask to be part of the Order and never mention he was a Death Eater, but that's the very reason why he could be valued as a member of the Order.
He frowned. "I'd like to talk to you," he said, glancing pointedly at the door that was still open. "Do you have a moment?"

Dumbledore nodded. Noticing the meaningful look at the door, he stepped the rest of the way into his office and closed the door behind him. "Yes, of course," he replied.
He surveyed the boy carefully as he made his way over to his desk and sat down. The jittery, nervous behavior did not go unnoticed by the headmaster. Something was troubling Jadon, and it was obviously the reason why Jadon was here. "Please, go ahead," he said at last. "Tell me what brings you here today."

Jadon fidgetted, and sighed, sitting at Dumbledore's desk. He looked like he was worried someone would catch him... well, he had a right to be fearful. If he was caught, he'd die.
He took a deep breath and met Dumbledore's eyes, and then brought both his arms above the table and rolled up one of his sleeves. The attack had been so recent that the mark on his arm was still visible... it wasn't as dark, but it was there. His eyes remained on Dumbledore as he revealed this.

Dumbledore understood the implication immediately. After all, he had seen the exact symbol in the sky after the Hogsmeade attack. He raised an eyebrow at Jadon and leaned back in his chair. "I see," he replied. "And why are you telling me this? Isn't the idea to remain anonymous?"

"That's the idea," Jadon said. He had to be honest, he was pretty relieved that Dumbledore didn't hex him on the spot. He rolled his sleeve back down, but did not lean back in his seat.
"I was part of the attack on Hogsmeade. I did a little research... I killed one of your students. Justin Bluthe, I think was his name... it was hard to get that name without raising suspicions. I'm telling you all of this because I want out... and there's a lot more than I'm willing to tell you. If you help me. Help me help you."

Dumbledore was quiet for a minute, listening to the young man speak. He had admitted to killing a student, and if Dumbledore were a different sort of man, he probably would have called in the Ministry to arrest the boy on the spot. Fortunately for Jadon, Dumbledore preferred not to act quite so hastily.
"So... let me get this straight. You took part in the Hogsmeade attack, and you killed a student... and now you are having second thoughts about the side you have chosen?"

Jadon nodded, slowly at first, and then more vigorously. "Yes. That's exactly what I mean. And I know you have no reason to trust me, but... I mean, it could have been one of my sisters. And I can't do it anymore."
He ran his hands over his head, bouncing his leg. He was getting in so deep, was going to be in so much trouble. "I can help. I know who other members are... I could give you insider information on plans..."

Dumbledore thought this over. Jadon was far from the first death eater to have a change of heart and switch sides. Voltaire and Isabella had done so, as had Emily. And then there was the complicated case of Tyler Jackson.
Dumbledore trusted all of them completely. But as the violence began to escalate, the risk of trusting the wrong person was increasing.
"Very well. I am willing to work with you on this, but I need to be sure you are aware of just what kind of risk you are taking. If you are caught, Lord Voldemort will put a price on your head."

Jadon sighed. "Yes, I know. He'll kill me the instant he finds out. Or he'll send someone else to do it."
He leaned back, slouching. He was just too tired to be straight and proper right now. "No one can know. Not even my family. And if I leave Lord Voldemort, I'm in danger, too. I want to be a double agent... and it will probably end in sparks for me... but I'll help as much as I can until then."

Dumbledore considered this. A double agent would be extremely useful, he couldn't deny that. But there was an awfully good chance that he could slip up or be caught. There was also the fear that he could have been sent by Lord Voldemort to infiltrate the Order of the Phoenix and bring back information.
"Are able to practice Occlumency?"

Jadon brought his hands to his lap and frowned. Was Occlumency a requirement of everyone who worked for Dumbledore?
He shook his head, looking a little apprehensive. Or was Dumbledore really asking if he would be stopped if he tried to get inside Jadon's head? Or was he missing the point entirely?
"No, I'm not able to. But I can learn, if I need to." He needed to be forgiven. That was ultimately what this was all about. He'd done something absolutely terrible, and he needed to atone for it... he couldn't live knowing his sisters would fear him if they knew.

Actually, Dumbledore's reason for wanting to know if Jadon knew Occlumency was actually quite different. He knew from talking to Voltaire and Isabella that Lord Voldemort did, in fact, practice Legilimency, and if Jadon were to act as a double agent, he would need to learn how to keep the man--if, in fact, he could still qualify as a man--out of his head.
"If you're going to do this, you will need to learn it," he said. "I can speak with our Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, Isabella Rothschild. She can instruct you on Occlumency. Like you, she was a Death Eater who switched sides, and for much the same reason... because of family. We'll schedule some training sessions as soon as possible."

And that was it. Could it really be that easy? Jadon rather thought that he would have to go through some kind of test or take veritiserum or something to prove that he wasn't trying to spy on Dumbledore or the Order.
"Okay. Whenever. I'll be glad to take the lessons. Professor... I know I shouldn't be complaining, but... why aren't you more distrusting? Any of them could walk in here and say it was about family."

Dumbledore smiled slightly. It was true, he had the tendency to believe the best in people, even when all evidence pointed to the contrary. Still, he leaned forward and studied the boy for a long time. His pale blue eyes focused on Jadon's eyes, holding them as if he was trying to read something in them.
"I don't need to use Legilimency to see what is in a person's heart," he replied. "It's all written in their eyes, if you look deeply enough. Nevertheless, what I will do is give you a test before you are given any really important information."

Jadon felt mildly uncomfortable as Dumbledore's eyes pierced into his own. He was still expecting Aurors to descend on him and drag him off to Azkaban. Merlin knew he probably deserved it for what he'd done to that boy.
"You don't have to give me any information, I mean, I'm not expecting it," he was quick to say. "I can just give you bits of what I know. I really don't expect you to trust me right off. I just couldn't handle it if anything happened to my sisters... and I feel like they were so close. It wasn't a coincidence, you understand, that the children of the pureblood families all went home the weekend of that Hogsmeade trip."

Dumbledore nodded grimly. He had suspected this, of course, but had no proof. It had been rather obvious when the Burkes and the Scotts and the Blacks and other pureblood families had all abruptly decided to bring their children home for the weekend. Yes, the families were close, and many of them did this anyway, but all of them at the same time had certainly raised a few eyebrows, especially given what had happened.
"No, I imagine not," Dumbledore replied. He sighed, then nodded. "Very well. I'd like you to report directly to me with any information you are able to get. Especially plans of further attacks. I don't want to see another massacre like Hogsmeade take place ever again."

"Of course," Jadon replied quietly, his eyes dropping to his hands. He should have never been involved in that first fight.
The other thing to consider... he knew several Death Eaters personally. Justin, his aunt and uncle, his own mother and father... could he really turn any of them in? How much help could he give Dumbledore without betraying his friends and family?
"I don't know of any other attacks yet. There are little ones in the works, but only those involved really know the details. It's not safe to go out alone, though. I do know that you have students who are Death Eaters."
