Brett was somewhat surprised to receive the owl from Ray.
He hadn't seen Kiara in nearly ten years. Truthfully, he'd even forgotten she was in London. She had been taken away when he was 18, and he hadn't heard from her since. Granted, she was still a child then... what had she been? 13? Their lives had been on completely seperate paths simply because of the age difference, and now it seemed like they were to collide again.
He adored Ray, and would do anything for the man, so he sent an owl to his daughter, reminding her who he was and asking her to meet him at the gardens... it seemed like nuetral enough of a place to meet, after all.
And here he was, hands in his pockets, talking to a pretty girl that had come in the same time he had, but he was keeping his eye out for Kiara. Would he even recognize her after all this time?

The nerve. The absolute nerve of him to presume to contact her after all these years! He hadn't sent one letter though she had written to him often enough, most of the time complaining about where she was and how she doubted if she'd ever be a lady. She put many of her childhood hopes and whims in those letters, her vulnerability through the tender years of girlhood and he hadn't said one thing in return.
She decided to stop writing to anyone from her old life all together, if they could turn their backs on her and forget about her then she would do the same to them. Perhaps that was childish but she was bitter, and perhaps she had never gotten over it. But she was a lady now, storming in and throwing something at him was not something she was allowed to do anymore.
He hadn't seen her in so long and she had been so devoted to him as a child. Perhaps he broke her heart even though she didn't know it, perhaps all that idol worship was a young girl's infatuation but he was simply so amazing to her in every way, and then...then it all fell to pieces. She changed, she had to. So now he was in town and wanted to see her well fine, she'd see him, it'd be impolite to refuse no matter how much she wanted to, although she couldn't quite ignore the thread of exhilaration and anticipation she felt.
Garbed in a sleeveless light cream chiffon dress with a black ribbon tie around her lower ribcage showing off her petite figure she did a small pirouette in the mirror and checked how she looked. Setting her hair up in a loose chignon and stepping into her dainty slippers she made her way to the Gardens where he had asked to meet her.
"Mr. Pierce?"

Brett looked up, hearing his name, and his smiled faded slightly. He just looked at the woman for a long time, and it struck him that he did indeed see her as a woman. But for a moment, he couldn't tell if it was her or not. She was certainly not the girl he knew.
He turned back to the girl he had been speaking with and politely excused himself, giving her a parting smile, and if he'd been wearing a hat, he would have tipped it.
"Brett, if you will. Kiara?"

She was slightly uncomfortable with his lengthy perusal but he seemed to collect himself and she had never lost her own composure, except for the briefest moment when her breath caught.
Such a foolish thing really, she remembered what Brett looked like, hell she had worshiped him often enough anyway, but did he have to confirm how beautiful he was? It couldn't just have been a simple fancy of a child? Merlin if it was possible he looked even more beautiful, having filled out more the way a man would, and there was something about him that instantly sent her pulse racing.
Warning bells flared and she nodded, " May I be the first to welcome you to London, Mr. Pierce." she said firmly keeping his name up like a barrier between them, " Do you plan on staying long?" she inquired. Her voice was polite there was nothing really wrong with her composure or her words, but inside she was going haywire. She hadn't wanted to put an ocean's distance between them, between her and everything that mattered to her, but she had, they forced her to, but now she had a new life, one that was very orderly and maintained, she didn't want this interference.

"Kiara," Brett said again, affirming it now rather than questioning if it was really her. She looked stunning, and had he not been so shocked, he might have told her as much. She was definitely not the 13 year old girl he had last seen.
"Wow. It's really nice to see you."
When she 'welcomed' him, Brett raised his eyebrows and smiled, almost laughing. "Oh, no," he said in his Southern drawl. "I've been here for a couple of years, actually, and yes, I plan on staying. How have you been?" He asked, reaching out and taking her shoulders.

A couple of years? Her nose wrinkled but she hid the pain of that remark. He had been living in london and hadn't sought her out until now, wasn't that just a fine thing. And how come she didn't know he lived here? Oh she just wanted this whole dreaded meeting to be over.
"Oh, my mistake." she said with a quick tight smile. She had to also ignore what that southern drawl did to her insides. Merlin she missed him, she missed the ranch, she missed everything, most days it was as if she didn't know herself anymore, she had been taken so far from the place she belonged, and taught so many rules it was as if she were now a puppet or a doll playing out someone else's life.
"If I had known.." she paused if she had known he was so near what would she have done? Nothing. Nothing really, it would only have tortured her. She shook her head.
Just like that, her mouth tightened a bit, she needed to relax, she needed to not get so mad and of course he'd have no clue why she would be mad in the first place. She smiled pleasantly, "Well." she answered. Politeness required her to follow up," And yourself?"
