Kaden knew this line of work would be dangerous, but the very recent news of Roland Ferrera's death only intensified his concerns. If he died he would leave his brother and sister alone. They'd have no one to watch after them, not really. Even though they all lived with a "family friend", it was basically like the kids were on their own. Thank Merlin both of his siblings were still in school where they'd have adult supervision without him being there every day.
Everyone was saddened by the passing of the brave Auror, as was Kaden. But there was an electricity in the air that he couldn't pin point as he headed to the Head's office. He wasn't sure why he was there, only that he'd been told to see Angelique and he followed orders. He inhaled deeply before knocking firmly on the door and waiting for an answer.

It seemed like every time she had a department meeting, Angelique had to spend the rest of the morning in private meetings with various aurors. It was strange, on this day, the last department meeting was weighing heavily on her mind. Roland had arrived late, and she had chastised him, then paired him with Riley, an act she had known would outrage both parties. She almost smiled as she remembered him bursting into her office after the meeting and demanding to know why he was being saddled with a partner. Only somehow, now, the whole thing didn't seem so funny. If she had let him stay on the case on his own, would he be dead now? Or would it have happened sooner?
Angelique had to shake herself out of these thoughts. As sad as it was, it was time to move forward. And that meant it was time to concentrate on stopping the death eaters and Lord Voldemort.
As she heard the knock on her door, she let out a breath. So the private meetings were to begin. "Please come in," she called.

Kaden heard the voice through the door and entered the office, trying to cover up his nerves. He was hoping to get an assignment today, but after that meeting about Roland he wasn't sure if it was the right time. Would they be putting inexperienced Aurors out on the streets when experienced ones were dying? He cleared his throat. "You wanted to see me, Angelique?"

Angelique smiled at the young trainee. "Yes, Kaden. Please sit down."
She regarded the young man quietly, releasing a weary sigh. The job was really starting to wear on her, but she only allowed it to show for a few minutes at a time. Still, in situations like today, when she had to deal with the death of a young but talented auror, she really just wished she could crawl under a rock somewhere and hide for a while, just to let the world carry on without her. But of course, she couldn't afford to do that, not now. She had a job to do, and if she didn't do it, things would only get worse.
"You've completed your training, Kaden... and I think it's about time for you to start your first mission."

He suddenly burst into an eager smile. "Really? Brilliant! I promise I won't let you down." It didn't matter what the mission was, he would complete it with flying colors. There could be nothing Angelique could throw at him that would take away this feeling of accomplishment he felt right now, knowing she thought he was ready.

Kit was really on a roll today. She'd been in the office less than an hour and already everyone hated her. Honestly, how was she to know that some guy had died? They needed to make these things clear from the beginning. Then again, there probably weren't a lot of new people coming into the ministry who could inadvertently blunder into a wake and stick their foot in their mouth. Somehow, Kit was just unusually talented at making a fool of herself.
After the meeting, she made things worse by going to a seemingly unoccupied desk and sitting down, assuming it was to be hers. It was not empty, but no one was sitting there, and it was so neat, and there was no name tag there. Of course, she was quickly informed that this was the dead guy's desk and her desk was to be on the other side of the office, in the back. So once again, she had everyone hating her, and she was convinced that the guy's partner was busily plotting to murder her.
Once she'd got settled into her new desk (which she immediately titled Siberia, due to the distance from... everything), she headed over to Angelique's office, and, in yet another thoughtless blunder, burst inside without knocking. "You wanted to see me?" she asked. "Oh... sorry... I didn't realize someone else was in here..."

Angelique was about to tell Kaden that he was going to be assigned a partner, when the very person she intended to assign to him walked in the room. It was convenient, but Merlin, the girl needed to learn a little discipline. Angelique could already tell that she was going to have her hands full with this girl... No wonder the American ministry had decided to send her over here.
"It's OK, Kit," she replied, her tone sounding like that of a patient teacher. "I actually was just about to send for you. But in the future, please, always remember to knock before you come in, OK?"
She needed an assistant. Things like this wouldn't happen if she had an assistant.
"Anyway, sit down. I'd like for the two of you to meet, actually, because you'll be working together. Kit, this is Kaden Michaels. Kaden, this is Kit Cunningham, your new partner."

Kaden looked behind him as someone came in and he watched the girl's face as she realized she had barged in on a meeting. He waited patiently while Angelique explained things, but as she kept going on Kaden's eyes widened a bit. He was going to have a partner. What sort of luck was it that the girl who had come in uncalled for was the one he was gonig to be introduced to? "Nice to meet you," Kaden said, extending his hand to her politely. It didn't matter to him if he had a partner or not. The thing that mattered was that he was finally ready to move forward in this department.

Kit didn't mind having a partner, either. As long as he didn't resent her for apparently taking the place of a fallen hero, Kit was OK with her new partner. He looked young and inexperienced, but he seemed harmless enough. She certainly needed someone who could show her the ropes around here. And maybe help her not to stick her size 8s into her mouth.
She took the boy's hand and shook it, her grip firm and confident. "Nice to meet you, Kaden. Heh, Kit and Kaden. Sounds like a partnership made in heaven."

Kit seemed nice enough. Kaden was sure they would get along well. "So," he turned back to Angelique excitedly, "what are we going to be doing for the Department?" His mind raced to the possibilities that were beyond his reach; guarding the Minister, foreign relations, etc. He knew the two of them would get a simple mission, but that didn't stop his imagination. He couldn't wait to tell his brother and sister.

Angelique looked at the two of them. They were an odd pair, to be sure. She had seen some of Kaden's training records, and he seemed normal enough, but he was awfully... earnest and innocent compared with Kit. She hoped they would work well together, but right now she couldn't tell.
"OK," she said. "There's been a series of suspicious magic-related attacks up in Dorset," she said. "No deaths or injuries so far, but it's raising some suspicions. You know, disappearing-reappearing items, cars ending up in trees, houses being flipped upside down... and the worst thing is, some muggles, particularly local public figures--politicians and such--have been acting oddly out of character, giving orders to destroy things or arrest innocent people. We think they might be under the Imperius Curse. I'd like you two to take a couple of the trainees--Hestia Jones and Marlene McKinnon--to investigate the case."

Kaden had heard about the Dorset upset, but only a bit about the automobiles and houses and such. The political figures being under one of the Unforgivable Curses was news to him. Exciting news. He couldn't wait to investigate it. "How long has this been going on? What are the victims names?" Kaden was eager to get on the case and there were hundreds of questions popping into his head. It took an awful lot of restraint to only ask those two.

Although Kit was usually outspoken, she managed to hold her tongue at this. The case sounded similar to one she had done back in the States, so she knew she could handle it. Of course, back then, she had done it alone, and hadn't had a young partner on his first mission, not to mention two trainees, to work with. She didn't mind working with Kaden, although his youthful enthusiasm would need to be tamed just a little bit. And maybe the two trainees would be fine. But all of it at once could be a bit overwhelming, especially since she was new here, too. She felt like she was essentially in charge.

Kaden looked over at Kit, who seemed suddenly quiet for the boisterous personality she showed in the first five minutes of their meeting. But Kaden said nothing, and simply waited for the answers to his questions, if there were answers available.

Angelique produced a folder from her desk and held it out to them. "Included in the file, you'll find a list of names and basic events in the case. I recommend that you spread out, canvas the community and ask questions of as many of the locals as possible. The trouble started a little over a month ago, and we were tipped off that something was up when the town's biggest mansion suddenly flipped over onto its roof and balanced there. At first, it seemed like an isolated incident, but then it seemed to escalate. Last week, the mayor announced the town's most prominent landmark--an old theatre thought to date back to Shakespeare's time--was to be destroyed. The locals are frantic."
