Geoffrey stopped and looked at her, not quite sure how to take this news. It didn't surprise him, but his first concern was for Riley. And what really mattered was how she felt about it. She'd been through hell. Witnessing Roland's death was hard enough. But doing it while the memory of his kiss was so fresh on her mind... That really had to mess with her head. No wonder she was not feeling well.
"And you can't forget it, can you?" he asked softly.

Riley hesitated. She'd told Geoffrey to make him feel better. She thought he'd smile and that would be the end of it.
After a moment, her shoulders fell and she shook her head. "I think about it constantly. I can still feel him."

Geoffrey immediately wrapped his arms around her in a long hug. Whether she wanted to admit it or not, Geoffrey was now almost certain that she had been on the verge of falling in love with Roland. And it just wasn't fair that he was ripped away from her before she had the chance to explore those feelings.
When he pulled back, he pressed a kiss on her forehead. "I'm glad you were there for him, in those last moments. And I know you're strong and you're not going to break... but this isn't an easy thing to deal with. I know that. Just... you know you can come to me any time you need anything. Seriously. I don't care if it's 4 am. I'll be there for you."

"Okay," Riley said, nodding. "Next time I can't sleep, I'll be knocking on your door and you'll wish you hadn't given me that invitation." She smiled at him, trying to show him that she was fine, and she finally pulled away.
"I just wanted you to know. Anyway, I'll call you tomorrow," she promised, and finally turned to go upstairs. She was so tired, but even now she knew she wouldn't be able to sleep. The nightmares never stopped when she was alone. She was sure she would never stop reliving that night.

Geoffrey sighed softly. If he was honest with himself, he really didn't think that Riley was all right. Not at all. She was somehow managing to hold it together on the outside. But on the inside, she was breaking down. How long before the rest of her fell apart?
But he gave her a reassuring smile. "I'm going to hold you to that," he said. "If I don't hear from you tomorrow, I'm breaking your door down, got it?"
He squeezed her hand quickly. "Go. Get some rest. And feel better. That's an order."

"Got it," Riley said, nodding. "Rest, and call you. I can handle that."
She squeezed his hand back and thanked him again for lunch, even if she didn't eat any of it, and headed upstairs.
It was probably just her imagination, but it seemed so quiet without Roland that she slowed as she passed his door, her fingers reaching out to touch it, as if that would somehow help her feel Roland, but she pulled back and unlocked her own door quickly.
It didn't matter. She couldn't stay there. She couldn't sleep, and just sitting in the apartment would kill her, so within half an hour, she was gone again, just needing to get out.
