Marlene had been out of sorts ever since the Hogsmeade attack. Kingsley had been badly injured and was still being treated in St. Mungo's. It turned out he had been hit with some other spell that continued to keep him incapacitated and was difficult to treat. As a result, Marlene would be attending the Yule Ball alone. Well, not exactly alone. She would be with her other best friends, including Alice, Frank, and Hestia. But she would be dateless. And she had been really looking forward to dancing with Kingsley and having him see her in the beautiful blue dress she and Alice had picked out for her.
There were things unresolved and uncertain between them and she still hadn't figured out where they really stood. She had hoped the ball would be the time to figure that out. Instead her heart felt like it was in suspended motion, waiting for something that might never come.
Marlene stared at her reflection in the mirror, sighing quietly. She hardly even had the heart to do this at all anymore.

Hestia sat on the edge of her bed, silently watching Marlene's every move. Ever since the attack, Marlene had been rather quiet and unresponsive. No doubt it had something to do with Kingsley getting badly hurt. It was one thing to have cuts and bruises like they did, but Kingsley was still at St. Mungo's. And the group was suffering without him. Hestia cleared her throat quietly.
"You wanna talk about it Mar? I'm sure it would help." Hestia loved Marlene with everything she had, just like she did Frank and Alice, but she would never understand why Marlene wouldn't just give into the feelings she had for Kingsley. They were there, but where? "I think Frank wants to hang in the common room. Do you wanna go talk down there? It's slightly chilly up here anyway." [/size]

Alice was also concerned about Marlene. It was just not like her to be so depressed and quiet. Usually, strong, logical Marlene was able to look at every situation with such clarity and rationality that it drove Alice crazy. But since the attack, Marlene had just shut down. Alice worried that her best friend was headed for a meltdown.
"Hestia's right, Marly," said Alice. "You keep sitting up here, staring in the mirror... you're starting to scare me. I know you miss Kingsley. We all do. But you know he's going to be OK. Come on, let's go downstairs and get a little change of scenery."
She moved over to take Marlene's arm on one side and nodded to Hestia to take the other arm. If they had to drag Marlene out of the room to get her to move, Alice was prepared to do it.

Hestia nodded at Alice and stationed herself around Marlene's other arm. "Come on Mar. You know me and Alice don't want to be the friends that annoy you to death. Let's just go meet Frank and hang out. It'll be good for you."

Marlene gave a weak smile and carefully extracted her arms from her friends. "I'll go with you," she said. "You don't have to drag me down there. I'm fine, really. I just..." She sighed and trailed off, looking at them seriously.
"He's going to be all right. The healer said he was. I just... It's weird not having him here, you know?"

"Of course you miss him. You love him, but the logical part of your brain says no. So, when you do miss him, you don't know what to do with yourself, because you don't want to feel this. Not that I have any room to talk...but I'm just saying. This is what I've observed." Hestia shrugged and motioned for them to follow her towards the door. She almost felt guilty for being so blunt, but that was what Hestia was known for. Her bluntness and honesty. That's why she only had a few friends and they were the ones that could handle how tough and un-girly she was.

Deep down, Marlene knew Hestia was right, but she still hesitated. She was afraid of being in love, of losing control of her emotions. She'd seen what love had done to Alice and Frank--the confusion, the fights, the tears, but also the happiness. It all seemed so complicated. Marlene didn't know how to deal with that. She was supposed to be the logical one and love was just so... illogical.
On the other hand, Frank and Alice were happy now. Happier than she'd ever seen them. Love was working for them. Why couldn't it work for her, too? And how was she supposed to figure out what she felt if Kingsley was still in St. Mungo's?
They were in the common room now, and she began to look for Frank.
