"Yes, you are. And you're making excuses."
He could see the defenses going up, but he wasn't going to let that stop him, not yet. He had started this, and he had no intentions of stopping until she kicked him out. She would eventually, he knew it. But he intended to leave her with plenty to think about.
He reached out and placed a hand on her cheek, lightly stroking her with his thumb. "We've kissed four times now, Riley. And two of those times, you initiated it, not me."

"I'm not making excuses, and I'm not hiding behind Fabian. I'm telling you how it is."
Her jaw set as he pointed out that half of their kisses were her doing. "I didn't know a faster way to get your sister out of there. And I was..." She trailred off, not really having an explaination for the other kiss.
"All we do is fight."

"We're not fighting now," he said softly. "We haven't argued all night, actually, even when I was talking you ito something that I know you still don't approve of. When we're getting along, it's pretty great, isn't it? Come on, admit it. You like me, at least a little."
His hand was still on her cheek, despite the tightness of her jaw, and he turned it slightly to allow his knuckles to graze gently along her jawline.
"If you can tell me you felt nothing just now, when I kissed you, then I'll back off."

She should have pushed him away from her completely, and she should have probably kicked him out by now, but she didn't. The thought hadn't even crossed her mind. Not yet.
She stared at him hard for a second, then pulled pulled away from his hand, thus breaking eye contact again. "I'm dating Fabian, Roland. That means I like Fabian. It means I feel something when *he* kisses me. Okay?"
She would lie to him if he made her, but she hoped that was enough for him.

He said nothing for a moment. He just watched her, a crooked grin on his face. Slowly, he leaned back, folding his arms over his chest.
"I'll back off," he said. "This time."
Yes, there was going to be a next time. She'd felt something for him, and it scared her... but he had been scared in the beginning, too. It would just take a little time. And even though patience wasn't his strong suit, he could take this slowly and give her the time she needed. He turned away from her then, pretending to be really absorbed in the movie, even though he'd lost track of what was happening quite a while earlier.
After a few minutes, he said, without looking at her, "But you didn't answer the question."

She wasn't sure she trusted him that he was done, and she didn't like that he said 'this time.' "No, Roland. You're going to back off for good," she said, eyeing him as he turned back to the movie.
And there it was. He accused her of not answering the question, and she sighed. "All right, Roland. You want me to answer your question? No, I didn't feel anything. But you want to know what I feel when I kiss Fabian?"
Her eyes narrowed, and she decided not to finish that train of thought. She didn't even know what she would say, anyway, so she stood up, walking away from the couch.

Bored? He almost asked, but just barely managed to hold his tongue. He knew that insulting Fabian probably wouldn't win him any favors with her.
But then she got up from the couch, as if she was afraid to stay so close to him. Oh, no. No, she was not going to walk away from this. He had been prepared to let it drop for this evening, but she couldn't stop her denials. He had denied it pretty vigorously for a while, too, and he recognized the signs. She was trying too hard to fight what she was feeling, and he wasn't going to let her do it.
He got up from the couch and followed her, blocking her path. "I don't believe you," he said, his tone flat.

"Then I guess you don't have any problems, do you?" Riley said, pulling up short as he blocked her path. She wondered if he was doing it on purpose, but he was drawing himself up to his full height, and she had to look up to meet his eyes. It made her own anger feel somehow diminished.
"I was going to the bathroom," she lied. "Do you mind?" Her hand was on her hip, and despite the anger, there was a look about her that just said she needed to escape. To not deal with this.

"Actually, I do mind," he said. "You're running away, you're hiding... And that's not you. You face everything head on... so why do you run away from me? Am I so terrible? Or are you just like in the movie, clinging to something you think you want and ignoring what's right in front of you?"
He put his hand on her shoulder, easing her just a little closer. "Look me right in the eyes and tell me you felt nothing."

"I'm not running away. I have to go to the bathroom," Riley said, sighing. sighing and lying. She was not into this anymore, and he was getting too confident where all this was concerned. She was done humoring him, and she wanted to get the taste of his lips off her own.
"Okay," she said, shrugging away from him. "You're about to do something risky, that's all this is." It explained a lot. There was always the risk that he wasn't going to make it after all "You've had a real meal, and now I think you should probably go. Get some sleep. I'll see you in the morning. At the office."

The smile didn't slip from his face, but he nodded. "OK," he said. "OK, I'll go. But this isn't over. Not by a long shot."
The idea of leaving her right then physically hurt, but he had pushed her to her limit for tonight. There would be other chances, he was sure of it. And he'd given her plenty to think about. He looked at her for a minute, then turned and headed for the door.
Pausing with his hand on the door knob, he turned and looked at her once more.
"And you still didn't answer the question."
With that, he walked out the door and went back to his apartment, a smile on his face.

"Bastard," Riley said quite plainly as he closed the door, though she wasn't sure he heard it or not.
And she suddenly felt very terribly alone. She was standing in the middle of her apartment, a kiss still burning on her lips and a black and white movie playing in the background.
She licked her lips, where his taste still lingered, and took a deep breath. "Enough."
She went into the bathroom, leaving the movie playing, and locked the door. She could still hear the movie after she ran a tub of water, and she just stayed like that for a long while.
