Unlike the other girls in her dorm room, Scarlette was not going to spend hours getting ready for the ball. In fact, she wasn't entirely sure she wanted to go to the ball, but Jamie had asked her, and she couldn't say no.
But she was already in her dress, a vibrant red number to show off house spirit, which was in a way to tease Jamie, and in a comfortable pair of shoes. She liked getting dolled up as much as the next girl, and she did look very pretty, but she wasn't taking extra time with it.
In fact, she was in the hallway on the fifth floor, just walking amiably with Jamie before the ball began.

Jamie had smiled when he saw Scarlette, in bright red. Of course she'd do something to tease him, and so he'd come up with normal, all black dress robes. She looked really good, and Jamie hadn't said anything about it, although of course he appreciated it. And although dancing wasn't his thing, with hiim being a little taller then the average male, he'd wanted to do something nice for her.
At the moment, they were walking down the hall on the fifth floor, being casual and relaxed like usual. Jamie was happy, nothing seemed wrong at the point, just plain normal. He wasn't exactly sure where they were going, but it really didn't matter. He decided to finally say something about her attire. "You look nice."
He wasn't nessecarily eloquent, but it was true. He still wasn't nessecarily good with words around her, and still spoke with a joking tone, which no one else had really heard out of him. Jamie liked it.

Scarlette smiled to herself before casting a long, sideways glance at Jamie. "I was beginning to wonder if you even noticed I was wearing a dress," she teased him, but then thanked him and returned the compliment because she didn't want to scare him away from giving her compliments. True, she sometimes fished for them, but what girl didn't want to hear that she looked nice?
She had no particular destination in mind... she just wanted to spend the time with him before they were caught up in a group of people and she wouldn't really get to talk to him at all. Except maybe during the slow dances, but then she wondered where things were with them and if he would even ask her to dance the slow dances with her.
Well, if he didn't she was just going to have to.

"You're wearing a dress?" Jamie mocked right back, before rolling his eyes to mention. "And I absolutely love the color."
They had continued walking around in silence, and Jamie liked that it wasn't awkward or uncomfortable. In fact, it was just easy to be in her company. Everything seemed so strangely out of place. So far, she had met his family, even family he hadn't seen all his life, and they'd been through an attack. Now, a ball? He wasn't sure if they were known as a couple, or even if she took this seriously. He felt like he should find out sooner rather then later. But was after the dance better then now?
"What're you thinking about?" was his not-so-intelligent conversation opener. Depnding on her answer, he'd venture further.

Scarlette hit him in the arm, but not hard, and she laughed.
"Well, I could have worn your house colors too, but then I'd be a traitor, so red it was."
She shrugged at his question though. "Nothing important," was her immidiate response, but then she looked at him, well, up at him, and her smiled widened. "Honestly?" She asked.
She stopped walking and pulled up in front of him. "I'm just wondering if we don't want to skip the ball entirely and find something else to do."

Jamie made a face at her, not asking if hanging out with him would be have her considered a traitor. She wouldn't be with him if that was the case. Jamie rubbed his arm around the area she had punched him, giving her a puppy dog face.
"Just us?" Jamie asked quietly, unintentionally leaning down toward her with a small smile. "Escaping from a formal hell?"
That was a good sign, Jamie thought. SHe wanted to escape, already something he could definately agree with. He hadn't realized how far he had leaned over until he was a little less then five inches away. Jamie decided it would be more entertaining to stay just like that, see where it led him.

"I think those were my exact thoughts about it," Scarlette replied, smiling very prettily. Soon enough, her smiled turned into a wider grin, a playful one. "But I'm all dressed up and it would be a shame to have it be for nothing, right? And you're all dressed up too."
She was tempted to stand on her tip toes to close the gap between them and surprise him by pressing a quick kiss to his lips... but she didn't. It might freak him out just yet, and she wanted to avoid that. So she let him stay like that, and her eyes narrowed ever so slightly.

"I suppose you're right," Jamie kept his posture, not moving an inch. "And I'm supposed to make sure Amandine's date doesn't touch her in anyway I find inappropriate."
He stood there, almost wanting to lean over, but deciding not to. If he messed this up, he'd probably go in there and beat up Dillon for no reason whatsoever, just to take it out on something. He liked this girl, and there might actually be somewhat of a relatiohsip for them. But he wasn't exactly sure what her thoughts were on relationships. Did she like them slow, or fast, or did she accept holding hands? Out of all the times they talked, he'd never asked. Jamie knew that he should at least imply he liked her, but he couldn't think of any hints off the top of his head.
"I think I like you."

Scarlette made a face at him for that sentence. It was probably the most anti-climactic profession she had ever heard.
"That sounds convincing," she said, a little disappointed, though she recognized the meaning buried in there somewhere. He was just shy. Well, fine. If he was shy, Scarlette wouldn't be, and she could find out once and for all how he felt. She didn't want to keep letting herself get invested if he only thought he liked her, and later changed his mind.
She stood on her tip toes and kissed him, lip to lip, keeping her eyes open to watch his reaction.
A moment later, she rested her feet solidly against the ground, her eyes still on his. "Still can't decide?"

Jamie kissed her back.
"Honestly?" he mumbled, giving her a small smile, still a little shocked that she had kissed him. "I made up my mind when I first met you. You'd be surprised how good I feel around you. I don't talk to anyone the way I talk to you."
He leaned down to press his lips against hers again. Everything that had been wrong seemed second to this moment. The attacks, Ama, having to dance. As long as he had someone, or more specifically, Scarlette, there to be completely himself around, then the future wasn't so bad. He pulled back and smiled, shaking his hair out of his eyes.

"Oh. Well, good. That's what I was hoping to hear."
She had been on the fence for a while, wondering if Jamie would ever see her as more than a friend, but now she had her answer, and she couldn't surpress the chills that ran up her spine when he kissed her again.
It was exciting and she loved it.
"Want to know something? I would have dressed up for you even if you didn't want to go to the dance. It is New Years."

"I'm waiting for you to inform me how you feel," Jamie was a little worried about it, although he was ridiculous for not being reassured. Scarlette had kissed him first. Jamie never had feelings of uncertainity, but he wasn't a joking person either, and he and Scarlette play fought all the time. Maybe she just had that effect on him. Jamie hadn't really liked any other girl before. This was all new to him.
"You would have? I'm sure I could have thought of something more, well, comfortable then having to dance in formal attire. Maybe going to London, if Noah would tell me how to get there. I don't know."

Scarlette's smile faded and her eyes met Jamie's rather seriously. "Isn't it obvious?" She asked, but the look in his eyes said he was unsure. "Did you miss the part where I kissed you? Because I can do that again."
She just shook her head, murmuring something about boys being clueless, and then got a mischevious twinkle in her eye. "I know how to get to London," she said. "I've been a couple of times." Just because she wasn't in Slytherin didn't mean she wasn't a trouble maker, and the more they talked about it, the better she liked the idea of skipping the dance.

"I just wanted to hear it," Jamie mumbled back. "It's a little hard to believe. I can't believe you like me." He said it as if she was some higher goddess, and he was a little peasant. "I maybe I did miss it. Maybe you should do it again, just to make sure."
"London?" Jamie's eyes got s distant look. "Noah made me go there once with Collin, but it certainly wasn't my own choice. I bet no one would even notice we were gone, and the chances of getting caught are almost none..." He bowed lowly, "Madam, would you like to accompany me on a tour around the beautiful town of London?"

Scarlette made a face, but smiled and shook her head. "I'm kind of crazy about you, Jamie." With that, she stretched up on her tiptoes again, kissing him even more boldly. He showed no signs of not wanting the attention, so she didn't mind giving it.
"I would love to go to London," She told him. "But we're going to have to stop by my common room, becuase I need a coat and a different pair of shoes. I'll leave the dress on for you, though." She smiled, then said, "Wait, what about your sister?"

"Crazy.." Jamie repeated, before giving her a huge smile. "That's perfect." He wrapped his arms around her, bringing her into a bear hug. "I'm one hundred percent sure that I feel the same about you, Miss Scarlette Meyers."
"Common room, ohkay. Just shoes and jacket, even better. But my sister!" Jamie winced. "I forgot about her." Forgetting about Amandine and her little date was bad, Jamie had practically obsessed over it for weeks by now, carefully calculating a plan to throw Dillon out a window if he laid a hand on Ama. But now he wasn't feeling like a big protective older brother. He was feeling like he wanted to do something for him, and leave her alone for this point. "I can kill him tomorrow."

Scarlette laughed when he hugged her like that, nearly lifting her off the ground. "My God, you are so tall," she said, still laughing. Sometimes, she felt so tiny next to him.
"Ohhhh no," Scarlette said. "If your sister going to hate me tomorrow... that exploring London took priority over watching her?" It made Scarlette's cheeks flush if it did, and she certainly wouldn't mind the time alone with Jamie. The Ball would probably be a waste of time anyway. But she didn't want him to feel guilty.

"Maybe you're just really short," he smiled, leaning down over her to demonstrate. "If I ever want to pick you up, I could strain my back. But I like it that way."
"She wants to kill me now for threatening her date," Jamie shrugged. "It's better if I don't go. Maybe she'll forget about the attacks for at least a few minutes. Make some new friends. And if I don't like them," he shrugged. "Defenistration is the method I was planning on." Jamie loved the idea of leaving Amandine alone. To explore with Scarlette. Alone time. They've had that. But not like this.

"Of course she wants to kill you. That's how little sisters work. They follow you around and adore you completely until there's another guy involved... and then she wants to be independent, but she also falls in love with the attention this new guy shows her, and she doesn't want her brother to scare off that kind of attention. At least, that's my theory."
Scarlette just smiled. Amandine would do fine alone. There were plenty of people at the ball to keep an eye on her. "Come on." She dragged him up the stairs toward the Gryffindor common room. "Frankly, I'm glad I won't be in these shoes for the rest of the night."

Jamie made a 'hmmph' noise, her theory made a lot of sense. It sounded like he was getting stood up by his own sister, and he didn't like the sound of that. He followed Scarlette up to the common room, none the less. "I don't like the sound of that. Being dumped for that kid." He had already explained his annoyance with Dillon to Scarlette. She might have been the only one to hear about it besides Roland. "Even though they are not anywhere near a relationship. If I can help it."
He wanted to grab a warmer cloak, it was New Year's Eve, after all.
