Rayne was fidgeting in her dress for the ball. It was blue, because Nate said she would look good in blue. Or that he liked blue or something along those lines. But she hadn't seen Nate in ages, and Evelyn was still going with Rabastan, which might make her alone at the ball.
If that were the case, she would just leave early, she decided.
Her hair was down and wavy because she hadn't done anything with it yet. She was actually changing out of her dress and back into a tank top and pajama bottoms so that she could do her hair and make up while Eves did hers. They would help each other, because that's what best friends did. Even if one of them hated the other's date.
"Maybe I just shouldn't go, Eves."

Evelyn was sitting cross-legged on Rayne's bed with an array of make up products scattered across the bed. She was trying to balance a large hand mirror in her left hand as she put on eyeliner with her right. Both girls were now wearing pajamas but Evelyn's gown was hanging up on the armoire unlike Rayne's. Evie knew better than to try and put makeup on anywhere near her dress. With her luck she'd get lipstick all over it then Rabastan would take one look at her and change his mind about taking her.
"Don't be ridiculous Rayne. You're going to go and we're going to have a wonderful time." She was looking at Rayne through the mirror and accidentally drew a black line from the corner of her eye nearly to her ear. She groaned in frustration and tossed the eyeliner on the bed and grabbed a well used piece of tissue to wipe off her mistake. "I'm no good at this make up stuff Rayne. I'm no good at any of this. You have to go to keep me from acting a fool in front of Rabastan."

Rayne frowned, stopping the eyeliner from rolling onto her dress. "That's easy for you to say. You have a date."
Technically, she did too, but where had he been for the last... Merlin only knew how long? She also highly doubted that the night would end on a good note for Evelyn, but she bit her tongue for once. She was sick of fighting with her friend about Rabastan. She was going to have to learn the hard way, and Rayne would be there to pick up the pieces.
"I only even agreed to go for Nate, you know. I didn't want to."

Evelyn set the mirror and tissue down and looked at Rayne. "You still haven't talked to Nate? I thought for sure by now..." Evelyn stopped herself, knowing this was not the path to go down tonight. "Well I'm glad you are going, no matter why you agreed. I promise you'll have a good time. Now help me fix this." she said, pleadingly. Her face was a mess, and nothing had been done to her hair. "You're so lucky you don't need to spend hours getting ready to look stunning." She fluffed Rayne's hair and grinned.

Rayne frowned as she shifted on her bed and took Evelyn's tissue. "Well, have *you* seen him around lately? He asked me to the dance and the practically disappeared. Dances are miserable alone, Eves. You know that."
She took off quite a lot of Evelyn's make up, just deciding it would be better to start from scratch. She was good at applying make up, which was strange since she rarely ever wore it. She just figured it was like human art. "Look up," she said, taking the pencil to Evelyn's eyes. "And thanks, but I'm going to need some time to look stunning, too."

"No. But you know, after that attack a lot of people have been with their families more. It doesn't men anything. Plus Nate's crazy about you..." Evelyn shifted her eyes to the ceiling, concentrating on not batting her eyes as Rayne worked to fix her face.

"Nate and I are almost as good of friends and we are," Rayne said, rather diplomatically at that. "He's not seeing anyone and I'm not... it made sense to go to the dance together."
Except that she knew, even if she wouldn't admit it, that Nate must like her. Why else would he have been trying so hard to get her to open up the last few times she saw him? And the truth was, she missed him being around.
"Where's your mascara?" She asked, looking around the bed for it.

Evelyn nodded along, as she knew Rayne would want her to, but she wore a knowing grin on her face. "Of course," she said rather sarcastically, "it's all practicality with Nate. I definitely see that..." Rayne could say whatever she wanted, but Evelyn would make sure the truth was there somewhere. Nate fancied Rayne. Rayne probably fancied Nate but wouldn't admit to it, she was odd like that.
"I think it rolled off the bed. I sort of dumped everything without thinking." Evelyn leaned over the side of the bed and looked underneath. Sure enough, there was her mascara, accompanied by a bright red lipstick and tube of chapstick. She used her wand to retrieve the items and plopped the lipstick and chapstick onto the bed. The mascara she handed over to Rayne.
