At Arthur's comment, Fabian knew that there was a chance that Riley didn't feel the same about Roland. In all honesty, he did like Riley, but he wasn't going to push for anything. He didn't want to force anything upon her or anything like that. Besides, he liked being around her. She joked around with him. If they just ended up friends, then he would settle for that.
Fabian kept his expression calm as he listened to both of them again. "She does smile a lot," he said not being able to trace of a smile. "But that is just because she's relaxed and not working."

Arthur smiled at Fabian. "Look, I'm not trying to scare you off from her... I just want you to be careful, that's all. She's always been nice to me when I ran into her in the hallway, so I think she's a great girl. But I'd advise taking it slow with her... being casual about it. And keep an eye out for Roland. He strikes me as the jealous type, if you know what I mean."

"I know. Thanks Arthur," Fabian said, making his smile apparent. "And there's no need to rush anything. I wasn't planning on anything specific happening. I was just going to let things happen, slowly of course." He took another drink from his mug. "And he kind of strikes me the same way, but don't worry about it Arthur, everything will work out some way or another." Fabian always took a good outlook on life, it was the only way to live, in his opinion anyway.

Arthur relaxed a little bit. "OK, good. Like I said, I just wanted you to know what was going on... I don't want people saying that you're clueless or anything. The gossip in the office has really been terrible."
He looked over at Ted with a slight grin. "Now that you and Andi are back together, they need new people to gossip about, and it seems Roland and Riley are their new topic. It's really getting kind of ridiculous. I mean, don't they have anything better to be talking about?"

Ted smiled, shrugging. "Hey, I'm just glad people don't look at me like I'm a grindylow anymore. I wouldn't wish that on anyone, though." He hated the gossip. There was a war coming... and they were concerned about office romances. Really, what was the point?
"But, we've gotten back together, Fabian's got Riley... just wait until you and Molly get together again. You'll be in the talk of the office, and she's not even in the Ministry. Actually, that might be worse for you than if she was."

Arthur grinned back. "Well, you've got to admit, you were kind of acting like a grindylow for a while there," he said teasingly. "Seriously, Ted, don't you ever even think about letting her go, you hear me? You were very unpleasant without her. It's a wonder she took you back."
"Anyway, Fabian," he said, turning back to his other friend. "That's really all I wanted to say. I just thought you deserved to know. End of subject, I promise. So... now you can tell me what I can say to Molly to get her to give me another chance."

"Don't worry about things getting to bad with Arthur and Molly gossip, I'll make sure of that," Fabian said with a grin. He wasn't going to have his sister, nor one of his friends talked bad about.
He laughed at Arthur's comment. "Well, I can tell you that Molly's a sucker for things that are really homemade. If you're not really crafty, I believe that she would go for flowers and something nice. It's really the thought that counts, I think. But anyway, you can, whatever you chose, take it with you when you do talk to her. It's like an apologetic thing. Then, whenever you're with her, just talk to her. Even if she pretends that she's not listening, make her listen. Get her attention. If you have to, just kiss her, tell her how much you like her and that you really want another chance to show her that. That'll be fine with me if you kiss her, as long as you spare the details." Fabian gave Arthur a teasing grin. "But, I'm being serious, make her listen to you, don't let her run away and just spill everything that you wanted to tell her."

Arthur listened with interest. He wasn't really the crafty type. He couldn't quite imagine what sort of thing he could give her that would impress her. But he could give her flowers... that much, at least, he could handle. "OK... OK. I can do that," he said. "Is there a particular kind of flower that she likes? Roses, or tulips... daisies... anything in particular? I'd like to at least make it personal for her, if possible."

"See, I knew you could," he said with a nod. "Erm. I would say daisies. Not many people give out daisies, plus she likes those. Of course, don't tell her that I told you about it. This is all your idea." Fabian smiled. "And if it gives you any courage at all Arthur, you're the only one that I think I would like seeing my sister with. I think that you're good for her and vice versa."

"Besides, Arthur, you know she really does like you. She gushed to Andi about you, so as soon as she hears that I'm only half the git she thought I was..." He wouldn't say it in front on Fabian, but he still thought it was ridiculous that Molly broke up with Arthur because of him. It told Ted two things... one, she had to be fiercely protective of the people she loved, and two, she was terrified of being hurt.
"I wonder if she's been in a really bad relationship," he asked, looking somewhat to Fabian. Or maybe she had just seen someone she loved, before Andi, go through a bad relationship.

"I don't think that she has been in a bad relationship before, because the guy would be six feet under, and I don't remember doing that to anyone," said Fabian. "I just think that she had been protecting herself to be honest, but Arthur's not a bad guy. I think she was just trying to cut off all contacts to you. After all, I know that she disliked you Ted, and that wasn't right, but then again girls see things differently, and Molly is downright stubborn."
Fabian gave a shake of his head. "But once Arthur shows up and has a thing of daisies and makes her listen to him, I think that everything will go perfectly."

Arthur smiled and took a drink from his glass. "OK, Daisies. Keep talking until she listens. OK. I can do that. Thanks, Fabian."
He had a hopeful look on his face. "Maybe if we're lucky, we'll all have girlfriends by Valentine's Day. How has Gideon been doing? I haven't heard from him in a little while. Everything OK in his department?"

"Anytime Arthur." Fabian took another drink from his glass and set it back down, then gave a little laugh. "Maybe." Somewhere in the back of his mind, he still thought about reasons that Roland would be jealous, but tonight was not a night to worry about those things. "Gideon has just been Gideon. He's been the same as he always has been. Everything seems to be going fine down in his department. I haven't heard him complaining of anything lately."

"That's good," Arthur said. "He's in a fairly low-pressure department... it must really be tough for you guys in the Auror department. It's even been crazy in the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts office. We're still trying to figure out the culprit in those clock attacks. There've also been some issues with the muggle subway trains going off course... we're investigating to see if it's magical, but it seems likely."
He frowned. "Things really are escalating, and I'd hate to see what would happen if it gets worse."

Ted heard the bell over the door chime, and he looked over his shoulder. Ah... there he was. If he had known Arthur was inviting Fabian, he would have never invited Roland.
"Our last guest is here," Ted said, raising an eyebrow at Arthur before he got off his barstool to intercept Roland.
"Hi," he said. "Listen... Fabian's here... and I know you're two seconds away from turning around and leaving, but we're just a couple of guys having drinks. It's fine."

Roland had debated with himself the whole way over there. He wasn't the type to sit around and talk to other guys about a girl, especially not a girl that he refused to admit having feelings for. But somehow, he'd decided to come anyway. And now that was here... yes, he was sorely tempted to walk back out. His eyes darted from Ted to Fabian, and his eyes narrowed.
"Why is he here?" he mumbled.

Ted raised his hands. "Not my doing, I swear. I'm not that manipulative. Arthur invited him... surprisingly for very similar reasons to why I invited you."
Ted knew he had to think fast to keep Roland here, and he said the first thing that came to mind. "But think of the oppertunity it presents. It's actually kind of genius, and I wish I had thought of it. You can scope out the enemy under friendly pretenses now... see just what you're up against."
Ted had nothing against Fabian, and it wasn't that he was rooting for Roland over the other Auror, but Riley and Roland just seemed to fit together.

Roland frowned and looked from Ted to Fabian and back again. Sighing, he said, "He's a nice guy. I know that. No one ever says a bad thing about him. I don't even want to know the kinds of things they say about me."
He crossed his arms over his chest, then thought for a minute, trying to choose his words very carefully. "Look, I'm attracted to Riley, that's all. I'll get over it. Obviously Prewett's better for her, he makes her laugh. I make her angry."
He turned around. "Just forget it, all right? You blokes have fun."

"Oh, no... no, I don't think so. Not after that," Ted said, moving so that he was in front of Roland again, now between him and the door.
"There is so much to address in that little rant of yours, I don't even know where to begin. Okay, so he makes her laugh. You know what they say about love and hate... there is a mighty fine line. He makes her laugh, and you invoke passion. Think about it. And just the fact that you're comparing yourself to Fabian already should tell you how badly you want to know why him and not you. Come on... we won't even talk about her, if you don't want."

Had he been comparing himself to Prewett? Without even realizing it, he had. It seemed like everything he said and did betrayed feelings that he did not want to admit to having.
Glancing over his shoulder at Fabian, he sighed. "Fine," he said at last. "I'll stay. But I don't want to talk about her."
He wasn't sure how he could avoid the topic, since she seemed to come up in every conversation he had these days. But every mention of her name was like a stiff breeze, pushing him closer to the edge. And he really didn't want to fall.
