"Thanks," Axel said. Leave it to Amandine to try to play the part. "Axel," he said, smiling. "Nice to meet you." He took a fork from the table and took a bite of apple pie. "How was dinner?" he asked quietly as the adults began to talk again.

Emelia didn't even like apple pie... so she supposed it was a good thing that was what her husband gave her. She would have a little so as not to seem rude, but it certainly ensured that she wouldn't eat too much.
She didn't know how to answer Mathieu's question, but she would give it a shot. Without Blake's help.
"We don't really have much of a Christmas tradition," she replied. "We have dinner when the boys are home from school."

Geoffrey, meanwhile, was completely oblivious about the drama concerning the Malfoys. He was focused on his sister and the fact that her expression seemed a little brighter, a little more... normal. Whatever Roland had said to her seemed to have helped, and Geoffrey felt immensely grateful to him. He actually almost felt guilty about deliberately provoking his cousin earlier. Especially if he was falling in love with Riley, who didn't seem to share his feelings. He waved over to Christine. "Have a seat. It looks like we're staying for a while, after all." Christine nodded finding her brother and then heard what he said with a bit of surprise, "Is that okay?" she wondered still looking for her father. She shook her head then and nodded toward the pie giving a half smile, "I can't say I'm too disappointed." she said honestly before going to get herself a plate.

Mathieu glanced uncertainly at Judah. The two brothers and Emelia had once been so close, and now Emelia was a stranger. A meek, fragile stranger. It was scary to Mathieu to see her this way, and he wondered what Judah thought about it. Clearly, Blake was in charge in the family. And no matter how much of a "friendly" act he put on, Mathieu was not fooled. There was something frightening about Blake.
"Oh, I'm surprised. I rather would have thought that the Malfoys would have a strong family tradition. But I'm glad that you all get to spend time together for a family Christmas. Noah and Axel look like fine boys."

Judah was not liking this one bit, except for the fact he did get to see his sister as well as his nephews. Part of him wanted to just question Emelia about what she did all the time and that kind of thing, just to see Blake's reaction, but he refrained from doing so.
He noted the small amount that Emelia had of dessert. Used to, she would eat a lot more than just that. Blake had to be controlling her somehow, but Judah knew better than press that matter. "Well, if you don't really have any traditions, I think that you should make it a tradition to come here on Christmas for dinner. That way, we can all be together since we don't ever get to see each other very much." He gave Mathieu a quick glance, then back to Emelia. "That would be nice, would it not?"

Blake smiled coldly at Judah. "Well... we shall see about that. We do sometimes visit with my cousin's side of the family for dinner. They stopped by to visit us earlier, which was why we really couldn't be here before desssert." His tone was casual, but there was just an underlying maliciousness to it.
"But yes, we are quite proud of our boys," he said, changing the subject. "You both have lovely families as well. Everyone has grown so quickly. I barely even recognize most of you... you were all so small the last time I saw you."

"Although, I'm sure that you are able to make an effort to make it here, even if it is for a few minutes," Judah said turning to Blake, with a smile of his own.
"The children do grow quickly and they do like to see family." He continued to stare at Blake as he said this, but then his expression softened as he turned to look at Emelia. "And your boys have grown up just as quickly. I think the last time I saw the children was when Axel was just a baby. We should get together more often, even if it is just dinner."

Blake paused with a forkful of pecan pie in front of his mouth. He loathed being put on the spot. He had no intentions of making this little visit a regular occurrence. He had come for one reason, and one reason only, but his enjoyment of that moment was quickly waning, even though Roland was still staring in his direction with panic in his eyes.
"We'll.... see about that," he said, his voice smooth as honey.

The slight hesitation was noticed by Judah's ears. He knew that even though Blake said something like that, they wouldn't really get to see Emelia for awhile. "Well, I'm sure that if you're not able to make it to dinner a few times, Mathieu and I could possibly take Emelia out. Maybe for lunch every once in awhile." Again, Judah smiled gently in Blake's direction.
Judah didn't like the man, and he didn't really care if he sort of showed it. "After all, she is our sister and we have a lot to catch up on. I'm sure a lot has happened since we really got a chance to talk to her."

Blake bit down harder than was necessary on a large pecan, making a crunching noise with his jaw. But his oily smile didn't fade. "I'm not sure Emelia will be available for lunch," he said. "Her days are very busy... she would have to see if she could squeeze you into her schedule."
Judah was testing his patience severely. Even Mathieu hadn't thought to push this hard, and Blake was extremely annoyed. He would have to change the subject.
Looking over at Roland, his eye gleamed. "So, Roland... I understand you've followed in the family tradition... I've heard quite a bit about your reputation in the Ministry. How do you like working with a partner? Didn't you usually work alone?"

Roland nearly jumped when he was directly addressed by his uncle. His mother had somehow placed a piece of apple crumb cake in front of him and he had taken to picking at it while periodically checking on his uncle to make sure he wasn't about to kill Uncle Judah.
"Er... yes," he said, narrowing his eyes at his uncle. He shot a nervous glance at Riley, wondering how to answer Blake's question. "I... worked alone before, but Riley and I have been working well enough," he said at last.

Riley glanced up, hoping that she wasn't being drawn into this. The more Blake spoke, the less Riley liked him, and she could tell that Mathieu and Judah both didn't like much either. It was awkward, and it would just be better if he stopped talking, in her opinion.
Quietly, she continued to eat her dessert.

Blake coolly pretended as if he hadn't noticed any negative reactions to his words. In fact, he let out a joyless, exaggerated laugh. "Oh, I don't doubt that the two of you get along quite well," he said with a wink. "How lucky for you to be assigned to such a lovely partner. You two must be quite close if you've brought her along as your guest to Christmas dinner."

Roland bristled at the implication, and for the first time all evening, he sincerely wished he had allowed Riley to go home when she wanted to. Blake had no right to expose Riley to such comments. And her presence here now put her in as much danger as the rest of his family apparently was in. She was here as his guest, which meant that, on some level, he cared about her. That had not gone unnoticed by his uncle.
"We have a professional working relationship," Roland said tightly. "I invited her because no one should have to spend Christmas alone."

"Thanks, Roland," Riley said, a touch sarcastically. She didn't see where Blake needed to know that she would have been alone, and it made her sound quite pathetic actually.
What a long night this was turning into... full of ups and downs and everything in between. Roland, she decided, had far too much power getting under her skin, and she needed to stop letting him do it.
"Actually," she said, "It was Cara's idea to invite me, and I couldn't say no."

If only she had understood that he wasn't trying to insult her, he was trying to protect her. Roland didn't like the look in Blake's eyes as he looked towards Riley, or the hint that they were anything other than work partners. It was bad enough when his mother did it, but when Blake did it, it took on a menacing quality that sent chills running down Roland's spine.
He shot her a desperate look, trying to urge her to be quiet, before turning back to his uncle. "Well, yes... it doesn't exactly matter who invited her. Riley and I are partners.... that's all."

Riley's eyes met his again, and she didn't understand what he was trying to tell her. He was acting so strange all of a sudden, and he was back to being rude to her. It hurt, a little, to be quite honest, since they were trying to be friends, or at least, she thought they were. And they were work partners that kissed...
"Right," she said, raising her eyebrows and putting on a fake smile, before she returned to her dessert. She nudged Geoffrey under the table though.

Blake, meanwhile, easily picked up on the subtext between the two of them--Roland's sudden attempt to play it cool in his relationship with his partner, and Riley's irritation at his cold dismissal of her. He worked in the Ministry as well--granted, it was a different department and he was frequently away on business, but he had taken a keen interest in his nephew's affairs ever since the incident, and he knew all about the frequent squabbles between them. He smiled, looking rather like a lizard.
"I'm sure you are *just* partners," he replied smoothly. "I certainly didn't mean to *imply* anything. Of course you are both very professional, I am sure."

Roland gritted his teeth. It was really taking every last bit of control he had not to punch his uncle. The man really was a jerk. Riley was upset, he could tell, and he felt badly about it. The last thing he wanted to do was to go back to fighting with her again. He just wanted Blake to stop giving her that leering look. If his uncle thought that Roland had feelings for Riley other than as a work partner, then she could be as much in danger as anyone else at the table. He desperately wanted to shield her from that.
"Of course we are," he said, his tone flat. "We respect each other."
He hoped that little bit would be enough to make Riley feel better, but throw off his uncle's comments. "But honestly, enough about me," he said. "I'm really not that interesting."

Cara picked up on her son's uneasiness instantly, and turned a bright smile to Noah and Axel. "Well, boys, how do you both like school? I imagine, being Malfoys, that you probably run the place, don't you?" The question was a joke of sorts, but neither one of the boys had spoken, and Emelia barely had. Frankly, she was sick of hearing from Blake.
And Roland and Riley looked like they needed a break from the interrogation.
