There was a thin layer of frost on the grass and the bitter cold wind seemed to seep right through the heavy woolen cloak that was wrapped tightly around Marlene. Ever logical, Marlene was wondering to herself just what she was doing out in such cold weather. It wasn't like her to just plunge out into the cold, even though she was tightly bundled in cloak, gloves, scarf, hat, and boots. But for some reason, she just felt she needed air.
Ever since Kingsley had declared his love for her in the spectator stands during the first task, her head had been spinning, as if she were on a muggle roller coaster that just kept going, over and over and over again. She needed to take a breath and think about what was really happening.
They were going to go to the ball together, that much was certain. She was officially, for lack of a better word, dating him. They had always been friends, and now it seemed that they were heading for something deeper. But it was happening so fast that Marlene just couldn't think straight.
Shivering, she did a quick warming spell, allowing a circle of heat to wrap around her, thawing out her frozen skin. She wouldn't be able to stay out here for long... the spell only lasted 15 minutes. And there were only so many times that she could keep doing the spell. But outside in the fresh air seemed like the only place she could go to get away from it all.
She leaned against the trunk of the old tree by the water and stared out over the lake to the distant horizon. Why couldn't she allow herself to just feel and not to think?
