"It's good to see you, too, Hagrid," he replied. "You haven't seen Jamie or Ama today, have you? I mean... I was just wondering..."
He bit down on his lower lip. He had to stop thinking about the note... but it was always there on the edge of his mind. He wasn't going to feel right until he had seen his brother and sister with his own eyes.
"Er... some tea would be nice, actually," he said, sitting down and trying to relax.

Riley shot Roland a look when he asked about two other students... presumably, his siblings. What was he doing? They were here to talk about Katie. What was he going to do, ask every staff member? It was, as far as she knew, unwork related, and she'd murder him if he asked evryone.
"No tea for me, thank you, Hagrid. I don't expect we'll be staying awfully long."

Roland caught the look she gave him and he stared back defiantly. He had every right to inquire after his brother and sister, especially since they had been mentioned already. He certainly didn't intend to ask every staff member about them--especially if he was able to take a short break to go and look for them.
"Hagrid, I understand you were the one who found the girl's body," he said, pulling his gaze away from Riley. "Can you describe the scene for us?"

Hagrid nodded solemnly. "Yeh... I did find 'er... The poor thing..." His big eyes welled up with tears and he sank down into a large wooden chair. "I didn't even know here... I make it a point to know all the students, at least by name... but I never knew Katie... she musta been real quiet..."
He sniffled loudly. "I was comin' back from visitin' wi' Aragog, an' I saw somethin' on the ground up ahead... I went over and saw her body, just lyin' there... so still... She looked so peaceful..."

Riley nodded at Hagrid's words, her attention taken from Roland. If she looked peaceful, there was a chance she had no idea she was about to die. Was there a chance she hadn't even seen the curse coming?
"Wait, you were speaking with Aragog?" Riley asked, her interest piqued. "So there was no way he was at the site where Katie died?"

"Aragog? No, why would he be there?" Hagrid asked, his brow furrowed. "He don't get around that much... He lets his children an' grandchildren do th' huntin' for 'im, mostly. There are a lot of 'em, yeh know. But Aragog, he was just in his usual spot and I was visitin'. He tol' me that there'd been some strange happenings in the forest... mostly concernin' werewolves. An' he said somethin' about someone masquerading as one o' his children... it didn't make no sense..."

"Well, it certainly wasn't a werewolf that killed Ms. Lawrence," Riley said, sighing and thinking over what was being said. She wondered if any of the others would have killed her, when there was that final sentence.
Someone masquerading as one of his children... Either a very advanced polyjuice potion, or an animagus. They would have to check all registered animagi as soon as possible. She sent a look at Roland.
"Can you recall anything else he might have said about someone masquerading as one of his children? A spider?"

Roland caught the same phrase and had the same thought. When she looked over at him, he nodded slightly and leaned forward in his seat. "Anything at all that you can remember, Hagrid. Even if it didn't make any sense to you at the time. Maybe a mention of caves or something?"

Hagrid frowned thoughtfully. "Yeh... yeh, come t' think of it, I do think 'e mentioned somethin' about caves... an imposter lurking near the caves. It didn't make sense at the time.. Wha' d'yeh think it means? Do yeh think this imposter was the one what killed poor Katie?" He sniffled as he said the girl's name.

Roland nodded. "Yes, Hagrid, that's entirely possible," he said. "We can't be sure yet, but we're definitely going to look into it. You've been very helpful. Do you remember anything else Aragog might have said?"

Hagrid beamed, glad to know that he had been of help. "I'm always glad ter help, yeh know that... especially if it'll help catch the one that killed that girl..." He stopped and blew his nose on a handkerchief. "I don't recall him sayin' anything else, though."
He stood up suddenly. "Oh! I fergot yer tea! Hold on... I'll make it fer yeh..."

But Roland also stood up. "Actually, Hagrid, thanks, but I'm going to have to pass. Riley and I have a lot of work to do, and I'm afraid we must get going."
He cast a glance over at Riley, then added, "But please, do me a favor... next time you talk to Aragog, could you ask him some more about the imposter in the caves? We'd ask him ourselves, but we're not sure he'll take too kindly to strangers."

Hagrid nodded enthusiastically. "Sure, will do. Sorry 'bout the tea... I'll have to owe you a cup next time yeh stop by. It's good ter see yeh agin, Roland!" He hobbled over and led them to the door. "I'll see yeh both agin soon, I expect."

"Goodbye, Hagrid," Roland replied. "I'll make sure I drop by again soon, since it seems I'll be in the area a lot. Have a good day."
He glanced at Riley, who had grown unusually quiet. "Well, what do you make of it?" he asked. "Is it really that easy?"

Riley thanked Hagrid again, and she was even silently thankful that Hagrid knew and liked Roland. It had worked to their advantage, if only just a little since Hagrid was very much the helpful type anyway.
When they had gone, she had a frown on her face, thinking things over. "I want a list of every registered spider animagus... so badly that I want to go back to the Ministry right now to get it. But something tells me someone capable of murdering a student, who obviously had something to hide, isn't going to be registered."
She sighed, running her hand through her hair again.
Something else Roland asked her caused her to backtrack and she looked up at him. "Easy? How is this easy? I mean sure, if we find a staff member in the registry, who just happens to be a spider... but what are the odds?" No, it couldn't be that easy, or someone else would have figured this out before them.
She shook her head. "No, it's not that easy. If it were, someone would have already tied the spiderwebs to the murderer."

Roland pressed his lips together, irritated by her tone. "I know it's not going to be easy, even with this information. I just meant that now, we have an idea of what we're looking for. It's circumstantial, but it gives us more than we had before."
"Do you want to go back to the Ministry now?" he asked. "I was thinking the same thing; if the person is a registered animagus, they shouldn't have anything to hide. But if they haven't registered... well, that's a possible motive."

"No," Riley said, shaking her head and conjuring her patronus. A moment later, it was on it's way.
"We'll get a list of anyone whose form is a spider in a few minutes. We should keep to our work here. Hagrid... was very helpful." She looked to him, oblivious that he was already irritated with her again. "We should see to the rest of the staff."
She left it open in case he disagreed with her.

Roland felt a mixed reaction at this. He had half hoped that she would want to go back to the ministry to get the list herself, leaving him here to go look for Jamie and Amandine. But he also knew better than to expect such a thing.
He simply nodded. "That sounds good," he said. "Who do you want to start with? Anyone in particular?"

Riley shook her head, mentally running over the list she had made of people to talk to.
"Well... actually, let's start with anyone new to the staff. There were no deaths before they hired a lot of new teachers, plus the guest judges... Moody, obviously, we can skip. So that leaves us with Juliette Dean, Caleb Reannue, Augustus Rookwood, Daniel Tortuga, and Arachne Weaver."
Yes, she had remembered all of them, but she was so organized that she even recited them in alphabetical order. "Rookwood and Weaver are both from the Department of Mysteries. So... take your pick."

Roland raised his eyebrows at her. It had not escaped his notice that she had said the names in alphabetical order by last name. She had, however, missed one name. "Bellatrix Black," he added. "The assistant to the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. If you wanted to go in alphabetical order," he said, quirking his lip up in the corner, "we should start with her."
