It had been Nolan's idea to spend the Hogsmeade weekend at the Quidditch Stadium. There was no game, but Nolan's favorite team was practicining, and he couldn't pass up the chance to watch. He wasn't the only one. The stadium was mostly empty, except for an occassional fan in the stands.
He came back to Jeremy, two butterbeers in hand, and handed one of them to his friend. He didn't even really know if Jeremy liked Quidditch, but he hadn't complained about coming, so Nolan took it as a good sign.
"I'm starved," he said, sitting down and taking a sip of butterbeer. "We should get something to eat after this."

Jeremy grinned and took a sip of his butterbeer. "Yeah, that sounds good," he said. He did, in fact, like Quidditch, but wasn't as passionate about it as Nolan was. He was still a little hazy on the rules, and liked to compare it to football, which he had played as a child in school.
"It's good just to get out of school for a while," he said. "It seems like all everyone is talking about is either what happened to Katie, or who's taking who to the Yule Ball. I can't believe they're even still having it after what happened."

"Oh, it's probably just one of those things... trying to make us feel like everything's normal, right?" Nolan guessed, his eyes on the field. "Or something to make us stop thinking about Katie. Adults do that... and it's really irritating sometimes."
He hated when Jeremy compared Quidditch to football. For one, he couldn't really see the similarities, and two, he had no idea what Jeremy was talking about. But then someone had really thrown him off by telling him the rules of American football, and he couldn't quite make sense of the two. One of these days, he was going to make Jeremy take him to a football game.

Jeremy nodded. "I know... like they think if they make things 'normal' for us, we'll all be happy and it will just disappear. Although I also heard they brought in some counselor to talk to students who were close to Katie." He took another sip of his butterbeer and huddled more deeply into his cloak. He liked being out in the fresh air, but it was a little colder out than he had expected.
"Speaking of the dance, do you have any idea who you're going with? I was thinking about asking Alenna Gavin, but..." he blushed. "What if she said no?"

"What good do they think a counselor is going to do?" Nolan asked, irritated by the mere idea of it. "What are they going to tell us about someone they never met? Honestly, talking with friends gets you just as far."
He took a long drink from his butterbeer bottle, looking his friend over. "Oh, honestly, Jeremy. Who gives a rat's arse if she says no? If she says no, you smile and tell her to have fun with whoever she goes with, and ask her to at least save a dance for you. She can't say no to that. And then you ask someone else."
He honestly didn't know who he was going to go to the dance with. He was going to ask Jackie, until rumors finally spread that she and Dean were finally an item. "I'm sort of waiting to see who doesn't have a date so I can swoop in and be their hero for asking."

As usual, Nolan had a point, damn him. It was just a dance; it wasn't life or death. So, as long as she didn't turn him down in some spectacularly embarrassing way, it wasn't the end of the world. He should just do it. And if she said no, then at least he would know that she wasn't interested.
"You're right," he said. "I should just ask her. How hard can it be? She's just a girl."

"Exactly!" Nolan said with a wide grin. Except that girls could be brutal and cruel, and you should never ask one with her friends around. That rarely ended well, but he didn't want to give Jeremy any more doubts, so he kept quiet about that.
"I'm going to be so disappointed if you end up with a date and I don't, you know."

Jeremy laughed. "Oh, I'm sure you'll find one," he said. "There are lots of girls in the school. There's got to be one that doesn't have a date. Besides, I might not get a date... Alenna might say no, and then I don't know who I'd ask."
Nolan never had problems with girls, and he was anything but shy. Jeremy was sure his friend would do fine. He was less sure about himself.

Nolan just shrugged, easy going and non chalant as ever. "Yeah, we'll see. Whatever happens. Hell, even if I go alone, I'm sure I'll get a handful of pity dances, right?"
The difference between JEremy and Nolan was that Jeremy was one of those guys you wanted for a serious, long term relationship. Nolan was the type of guy you dated for a couple of months to have some fun, and it was going to catch up to him in the future.
He didn't mind, and figured he'd deal with that when it happened.

Jeremy laughed. "I don't think you'll just get pity dances," he said. "Girls like you. If they see you don't have a date, you'll probably get plenty of girls ditching their partners for you." He nodded towards a group of girls that had just come into the stadium. They were giggling and pointing at the field. Obviously one of them had a crush on one of the players. "Maybe you should go down and talk to one of them," he suggested.

Nolan looked down at the girls and shook his head. "Hardly worth it," Nolan replied. "Besides, I don't feel like picking up any girls today. No energy for it. But I do need to find a Gryffindor girl who doesn't have a date. Oh! Or whose fighting with her date. Even better."
Deep down, Nolan was a good guy, and he always believed that any girl he could steal obviously wanted to be stolen. A true couple he would leave alone.

"Does it have to be a Gryffindor?" Jeremy asked. "I mean, obviously you don't really want to go with a Slytherin... although, that Ophelia Burke is really pretty. But she's out of our league, I think. But, you know, there are some nice Ravenclaws and Hufflepuffs out there, too." He grinned, thinking of Alenna. He'd never actually told his friend that he liked Alenna; he just figured that Nolan would make fun of him because of his little crush on the Ravenclaw.

"Well, no. I guess it doesn't have to be a Gryffindor. It's just, for some reason, I think there are more of them without dates than in the other houses. Go figure." He took a drink, and then raised an eyebrow at Jeremy. "If you think she's out of your league, she definitely is. Here's a secret... there is no girl out of your league. You just have to find the right way to get to them, and they're all different."

Jeremy thought about that for a minute. Nolan always did know how to talk to girls. He made it look easy. Jeremy, on the other hand, was naturally shy, and sometimes had trouble talking at all. He just couldn't quite seem to get the words out of his mouth. Sometimes, when he got really nervous, he even stuttered a little.
"Well, I guess someone like Ophelia would probably like to be told how pretty and interesting she is," he said. "But I don't know... she's sort of the type to just look at from afar. She seems kind of shallow to me, and I can't imagine what we'd talk about. I was really just using her as an example. Besides, I really want to ask Alenna." His cheeks grew red as he said her name. He had not mentioned to Nolan how much he really liked Alenna. "What do you think I should say to her?"

Nolan smiled slowly. "Alenna, huh? How long have you wanted to ask her for?" He decided, for now, not to give Jeremy any ribbing for this. He would be rather proud of his friend if he actually worked up the courage to ask the Ravenclaw.
"You can say some very general things, actually. Tell her that you love her smile. Or her eyes. But only pick one... they get suspicious if you give them too many compliments. Alenna actualy does have a rather pretty smile. Then just ask her to the dance. Tell her you would be honored if she would share your company or something like that. Or, be more casual and just say you would enjoy spending time with her. You sort of just have to feel out what would be the best way to approach her. She'll let you know."
