Theo strolled into the common room and made his way to the fire. Instead of plopping onto his favorite chair, he opted to stand in front of the flames with his palms held out. He had just come from walking on the grounds, but had to cut it short due to the frigid November wind.
The tower was once again empty, which was quickly becoming a common occurrence. He was reminded of the night he had met Laura- which was becoming a habit as he couldn't get her out of his thoughts. The Yule Ball was fast approaching, and from what he gathered she didn't have a date. This would be encouraging, had he not heard the rumors of her spending time with Devin Sheppard. The thought of the Slytherin boy made him shake his head in disgust. Laura seemed like a nice girl, and Sheppard was.. well not very nice.

With a yawn, Laura stumbled down the stone staircase leading from the dorms. She had decided early on that today was going to be a lazy day, which was why she had spent the morning sleeping. Now that her energy was restored all she wanted to do was catch up with friends or lounge around the fire. Jumping off of the last step, she experienced an overwhelming sense of déjà vu when she spotted Theo by the fire. These days, she seemed to see him everywhere. Deciding this time not to sneak around him, she calmy walked over to join him.
"Hey," she greeted him easily. "What's up?" Taking in the appearance of his slightly flushed face and the crimson and gold scarf around his neck, she gathered that he had been outside earlier. Taking a quick look around, she noticed that once again it was just the two of them in the common room.

"Well hello there," Theo responded, turning around in the chair to face her. "You look.. like you just woke up," he laughed. Her hair was slightly ruffled and she had a glazed look about her eyes, which were currently scanning the room. "Late night last night?" he inquired softly, silently hoping that her answer would be no. He knew that they had only become friends, but he couldn't help but feel a twinge of jealousy at the image of her with Sheppard.

"Gee thanks," Laura laughed while attempting to flatten her hair. "Nah, no late night. Just trying to catch up on sleep." She thought she detected an undercurrent of bitterness in his statement, but couldn't figure out why. "Is it too cold outside?" she asked, gesturing to hands which were held out in front of the fire.
Instead of making her way to the kitchens to grab some food as intended, she settled on the chair next to his and stretched her legs. Sure, she was hungry but it looked like Theo had something more to say and she didn't mind the conversation.

Theo nodded along to her explanation, feeling quite relieved. "Yeah the wind is pretty bad," he explained as he dropped his hands to his legs. He cleared his throat as she sat down, stealing himself for what he was about to ask. He wanted to find out the truth about her and Sheppard before he asked her to the Ball, so things were less complicated. "So I've been hearing some things lately," he began. "Mostly just around the dorms and stuff." Before continuing he glanced up at her eyes, to see if she had caught on to what here was trying to ask. He really didn't want to have to say it out loud, he could just imagine how that would go over. Hey Laura, so before I ask if you want to go to the ball with me I just have to clarify whether or not you're screwing Sheppard. Yeah that would go over really well, he thought with a bitter smirk.

He seemed to be waiting for her to put two and two together, and normally she would be able to but she just didn't see where he was coming from. "What have you been hearing in the dorms, Theo?" she asked stiffly.
Whatever he heard about her in the boy's dorm couldn't be anything good, and Laura was quickly racking her brain for anything she could have done to deserve that kind of attention.

He could tell she was angry. Instead of trying to get her to say it he decided to just get it over with, so with a sigh he continued. "There's just been some rumors going around that you and Devin Sheppard.." he trailed off to gauge her reaction to this.
Theo wanted to believe that they were just rumors, but Sheppard was notoriously famous for corrupting the girls- particularly the younger girls and Laura seemed the prime candidate for his latest exploit. But she seemed smarter than that- or at least he hoped she was.

Laura's eyes widened considerably as she realized what he was implying. The anger she felt left her literally speechless as she tried to make a retort to his statement. How could someone even make that up? And it wasn't anyone's business who she chose to spend her time with, even if she wasn't doing what Theo thought she was doing. It made her even angrier that Theo seemed to believe these rumors to be true- even if they weren't close he should know her enough to know that she wouldn't do something like that.
"Why would you even say something like that?" she shouted at him, her face probably turning a nice shade of red. She was so sick of all of these rumors. Why couldn't people mind their own business?

This wasn't how Theo wanted things to go. He had imagined that she would say that she didn't even know who Devin Sheppard was, then Theo would be able to ask her to the ball without hesitation, and she would say yes. Of course, things never seemed to go the way you wanted them to. He tried to think of something to say to placate her, and keep her from storming out of the room.
"Look, Laura it's just what I heard. I'm not saying it's true, I'm saying that lots of other people seem to think it is," he paused before continuing, "Is it true?" This would probably send her into a rage, and he couldn't blame her- it was pretty bold to ask her, and a bit stupid. He really should have just stuck to asking her to the ball, because at this rate he doubted she would want to go with him even if he asked.

Leaving the room seemed like a good plan at the moment- or even just hexing him. These thoughts ran through her mind as she glared at him silently. "It really is none of your business. I've been spending time with Devin, yes, but I haven't done anything like that! So you can tell all of your little friends to stuff it and mind their own business," she snapped. With that said, she began to rise out of the arm chair, ready to leave the common room and ignore Theo for the rest of the week.

"You've been spending time with him?" he exclaimed. "Are you aware that you're not the only girl that he's been 'spending time with?" Theo couldn't believe Laura was naive enough to not be able to see Sheppard for what he was.
As she got up from the chair he realized that he had made a right mess of things. He didn't want her to think he was accusing her of being a tramp or anything. "Wait, just let me explain!" he cried before she could walk out of the common room.

"What are you talking about?" she stopped dead in her tracks. Was he trying to say Devin was seeing other girls? She knew they were just having fun and getting to know each other, but she didn't realize he would be fooling around with other girls. Maybe Theo was just reciting another rumor he had heard, or maybe he was just trying to get her even more riled up. She honestly didn't know what his intentions were at the moment.
Wanting to hear more about this, she decided to sit back down. Instead of taking her place back beside him she instead chose a chair further away, as if to show her displeasure at the moment.

Seeing her stop, he continued, "He's pursuing at least one other girl, not including his.. sister," he made a face at that. Theo didn't want to hurt her, but she deserved to know what she was getting into. He sighed when she chose to sit further away, but was glad she decided to stay at all. "Look you deserve better than Devin Sheppard." She just seemed too smart to let a guy use her like that.

"His sister?" Laura asked with furrowed brows. With a shake of her head she shifted her position on the chair and looked directly at him. "How do I know you're not just saying these things. For all I know you have some secret grudge against Devin, and just want to sabotage things." Although this was a possibility, Theo didn't seem the cunning type to formulate elaborate plots- not to insult his intelligence or anything.

Theo decided she had calmed down enough to listen and hopefully think more rationally. "Well.. I think it's his step-sister," he said slowly, but then added, "It doesn't matter. Either way it's just.. wrong. I may not like the guy, but I wouldn't lie to you about this. Besides, what would I gain from upsetting you?"
He made a mental note to never get her mad again. From what he saw, she had a short temper and he didn't want to be around when she completely exploded.

She studied him carefully as he spoke as if to make sure he wasn't lying. "Look, I appreciate your concern, but I can handle myself. I'll keep what you said in mind, but I have to figure things out for myself," she told him quietly. Laura wasn't the kind of person who shared details of her private life with others, and could be a very secretive person. She preferred to do things on her own with minimal help from others, so it bugged her slightly that Theo was trying to get involved.
With a sigh she turned to Theo and gave him a brief smile. "Was there anything else you wanted to talk about?" Hopefully, if he answered yes the topic was focused on something inane- like the weather.

Theo was frustrated with Laura's need to do things by herself. Sure, it was okay to be independent sometimes, but everyone needed help once and a while. He decided that telling her this would probably be the last straw for her, and she would most likely leave.
When she tried to redirect the conversation, he didn't object, although his shoulders slumped slightly and he lost all enthusiasm. It seemed the perfect time to ask her to be his date to the ball, but he just didn't see the point anymore. She would probably go with Sheppard, he decided, and she would fawn over him just like all the other girls who didn't know any better did. He met her eyes, which had taken on a more lively appearance, and felt his dull slightly with disappointment. "No, nothing important," he mumbled. "You probably haven't eaten yet, and I have some stuff to do.." he trailed off flatly.

Laura noticed how he seemed to deflate after she brushed off his worries and changed the subject. She wasn't trying to dismiss him as untrustworthy, she just didn't want to judge Devin before she heard his side of things- she had already made the mistake of stereotyping him once, and if she was going to accuse him a second time she wanted proof.
She knew that Theo had wanted to say something else, but apparently she had upset him. "Yeah, ok. I'll just.. see you later." Laura could tell she was being dismissed, and found it slightly ironic that just a few moments ago she had been playing the victim, but now apparently it was Theo that was being wronged. So without hesitation she rose from the chair and crossed the room- without stopping this time. Once she had reached the portrait door she paused momentarily but instead of looking back, she hurriedly tugged the door open and stepped out into the corridor.

He just nodded at her parting words. Things were definitely going to be awkward between them for some time, after all he had kind of accused her of being a whore. Of course that hadn't been his intentions, but she had taken it fairly well. He had expected her to cry, or at the very least slap him; but apparently it didn't affect her.
Theo really didn't have stuff to do, and he figured Laura probably knew that. He just didn't see the point in continuing a conversation after saying the things he had said, for what it was worth Laura probably thought him a complete weirdo now. So with a groan he got up and headed for the dorms, thanking Merlin that there were no classes today.
