The sun shone down on the ground of the school and reflected brightly off the surface of the lake. There Abigail lay on the ground looking up at the sky. Her brown eyes were shut slightly due to the brightness of the sun. Yet, she couldn't close her eyes completely because that meant she would probably fall asleep. The last thing she needed was to fall asleep. For she would be awake all night. Last time that happened she almost broke her nose. For sure she had bruised it badly, and still hurt to touch. It may very well be broken. The most she was aware of though, was that it hurt badly and covering it up was a very painful feat. Between rubbing concealer and foundation and putting powder on top of it, she swore she lost feeling in her face. Yesterday she spent all day with ice lying on her face.
Now she was lying there. The slightest twitch of her nose and pain shot through her entire face, forcing her to cringe. That in turn hurt worse. She sat up quick and almost slapped her hand against her face. It only would have caused pain. It wouldn't have done anything else. How could it? It was already a deep purple, and she already had water in her eyes. This was bad.
Slowly the pain subsided and Abigail lay back on the ground. On her list of things to do would be to figure out what was wrong with her. She placed her hands behind her head and stared back up at the sky. She began to think of the shapes the clouds above formed. She couldn't help but get a little teary eyed. She and her best friend would do that all the time.
Abigail wiggled happily making herself comfortable on the ground. A wide smile spread across her face. At least a smile wide enough that she didn't hurt her nose again did. She was reminded why she liked it here. She didn't have to go home for break. She could go to her dad's house. That was a far fetched idea, however. Something would enable her from doing that, no matter what it was.
As content as Abigail was with the prospect that she would not have to see her mom. She sat up on her elbows and stared out at the lake. She saw the mountains reflection and smiled to herself. It was time she made a name for herself and not live in her past, no matter how much she wanted to. She wanted to find out who Abigail was without those closest to her. Now was as good a time as any.
Her only problem was she didn't want to leave the lake. Now that all those thoughts were gone, she had become intrigued with the way ripples washed across the banks. She wasn't close enough that she could get wet, but she still feared them. She never quite learned to swim. As embarrassing as that was, she sort of had an irrational fear of water. That had to do with someone shoving her into a pool and she nearly drowning when she was eight. She wouldn't bath for days. The need to clean her hair fixed that problem, but she still didn't like swimming pools or thunderstorms. That was for a completely different reason.
Abigail stared out on the surface of the lake, and got lost looking at it. For that brief moment, the rest of the world didn't matter and it never would. That was the best thing about it. She didn't have to think about things when she stared at it.
