Sheryl had seen Christine, though only briefly, and she knew Geoffrey was home, and it made her miss her own children terribly.
She knew that both Caleb and Sam were restricted to the schedules of the school, but it didn't make her wish they were home any less. Caleb, by all rights, didn't even have to come home for the holidays, but she hoped he would.
She found herself floating gracefully down the halls to Edward's office, leaning in the doorway as she smiled at him while he worked, then knocked on the doorframe to catch his attention.

Having Sam at Hogwarts was infinately preferable to having her in France, she was a bit closer now. He missed his family as well, but he tried in various ways to keep Sheryl's mind off of it.
Sensing someone was watching and a familiar someone at that he raised his eyes to meet hers and immediately smiled, " Are you going to come over here or am I going to chase you over there?"

"I don't know," Sheryl replied with a soft smile. "I kind of miss the days where you chased me."
Despite her words, she came into his office and around his desk, stopping next to his chair. "And how are you this morning?" She asked him, reaching forward and running her hand through his hair.

He laughed a little at that, " Oh and what do you call what I did last night hmm?" he asked with a slight growl in his throat as she came by him. He pulled her into his lap and closed his eyes as she ruffled through his hair that despite her fingers refused to break the mold it was in already. She would fluff and it would return to its ever sophisticated mop.
"Although you're right, last night does seem like too long ago.."

Sheryl smiled, but didn't laugh. "Well, never let it be said that you're an old man," she replied cheekily."
And then, the reason she had sought out his comfort became appearant, and she frowned. "James' children are both home." There was a touch of jealousy in her voice, but more the question of when their own children would come.

His wife wasn't very subtle and he smiled, "Hmm are they?" he asked playing obtuse.
Old man. Pfft. He was in his prime, and so was his wife...in fact he was thinking of giving her something to keep her busy while the children were both away.
He rested his chin on her shoulder, " I suppose that means Christopher's back in town, bloody bounder" he said affectionately.

Sheryl frowned. Edward knew what she was trying to get at and he was denying it to her. But still, she supposed there wasn't much they could do about the children not being there.
"If Christine is back, her uncle must be. Well, one of them. Merlin only knows where Anthony is. Why is it you and James never pick up and go off an wild adventures? The business?"

Edward wasn't denying her anything, he already knew what she was getting at and he had a surprise for her anyway so he might as well have a bit of fun.
"Anthony and Chris are the free spirits." he said with a twitch of humor at the corner of his mouth.

"And you're liar if you tell me that you and James aren't, at least somewhere deep down," She replied, knowing her husband and his family well. Maybe Chris and Anthony were the ones that acted on it, but none of them were tied down.
"No, Chris and Anthony are just the single ones, with no kids."

He smiled something akin to boyish delight, " James, like myself, have been tamed by beautiful women my dear. We only let our wild sides out in the bedroom."
He kissed her brow then and nonchalantly persued her earlier topic, "Hmm...although with Christine home and Christopher as well I suppose we shouldn't spoil it...how about I send Caleb an owl and have our kids come down next weekend?"

Sheryl smiled. "They're both probably busy, Edward," she said, which was the only reason she hadn't sent an owl herself.
She felt more attached to Caleb than most mothers probably felt towards their songs. She had had him very early in life, and in the marriage she had been in at the time, the baby boy was her only friend. She was just a child herself, clueless how to take care of one of her own. She felt like they learned and grew up together.

He frowned a bit, "Never too busy for family my dear." he said shaking his head he brought his hand to her chin, "Chin up love...I thought you'd be happier with the prospect of the kids coming home."

"I am," she promised. "I just don't want to push them. I don't want to be the mother that smothers them and makes them hate coming home. If they have other plans, let them keep them, won't you?"

He sighed, "You're absurd if you think that they think coming home is a chore." he rolled his eyes, " Besides I know perfectly well what there schedules are for next week. It's the ball or some something or other, which is why when Caleb told me he couldn't make it I asked him about this weekend instead. They're free, and they'll be here tomorrow." he said smugly though a little exasperated, then he kissed her the way that only Edward Montgomery could kiss doing his best to leave her breathless, "Happy?"

She smiled into his lips, still feeling like the overbearing mother, but she was happy. She missed her children. People tended to define themselves by what was most important in their lives... Christopher defined himself as a sailor. James was a businessman, though that was not to say that he didn't love his children. He loved them fiercely. Sheryl... Sheryl was a mother.
"Yes," she told him, softly. "I'm happy."

Edward was a patriarch. Family always came first, it wasn't just his own children, though he loved both Sam and Caleb to his heart's capacity and then some, Edward simply carried the weight of the family on his shoulders, as well as the title and prestige of the Montgomery name and station. While each of the Montgomery brothers had their own small scandal now and then, they were still welcome to all the society functions, and treated as valued peers to society. Edward, who in his youth, never gave a fig about the big popularity contest, and still didn't mind you, was still somewhat amused by people's acceptance, it simply had to do with how successful you were, and Edward was a successful man. He read people well, he made good decisions, and he knew when to let his brothers take the reigns. Like James and his nose for business, and Christopher and his eye for trade, Anthony and his various skills, and then not to mention the second generation down and what they were capable of. Edward implemented family structure and his word was law, at least most of the Montgomery clan indulged him enough to let him believe it was law.
Which was why Caleb and Sam were coming down this weekend.
He kissed her nose and then her brow affectionately, "Then so am I." he whispered.

She smiled gently in reponse to his lips. "You indulge me too much, Edward," she murmured. It was nice, after their time together, how he always seemed to read her mind and know her desires, half the time before she did herself.
It had been a long and broken road that brought them together, but she wouldn't have changed any of it for all the world. She had the perfect family here with him.

Edward laughed. He seemed to do that often with Sheryl in his life. He seemed to do many more pleasant things with her in his life that he hadn't done before now that she had become his wife. "Oh my dear..." he shook his head, " What a man I am. What a man you make me. Indulgent you say, besotted say I. I would indulge you, love you, care for you, bend to you...I love you and I want whatever makes you happy. I promised I would make you happy all the days of our lives together, that's a promise I intend to keep."

"It just means you're whipped," Sheryl replied with a grin, and kissed his lips lightly before getting up. "I made tea. Are you interested? You've been couped up in your office for far too long today, you know. I miss you."
She truly loved her husband, and she didn't see their kind of passion ever fading. She wanted to grow old with him.

At one point in his life that phrase would have sent him into a rage, he had for a while been in the clutches of an evil woman who had used her power over him to control and subdue him, who could never fully appreciate him. Now that he was with Sheryl that past stayed where it belonged, her innocent quip over him being whipped only made him smile with a bit of reflection added in.
"Yes I'd love some." he told her softly.
