Character Name:Erica Raines
Approx. Age:26
Description or Celebrity Claim: Jennifer Love Hewitt
Subject: Guidance Counselor/ Student Aide
Personality:Erica is tough, but gentle. She’s a caring heart but not a pushover. Most people think that because of her job she’d be the perfect target for a dupe or two but she’s smart and usually ends up making friends out of enemies or potential enemies. With a take no prisoner’s attitude she attacks a challenge with a vengeance and if she’s got her hooks in you or if you’re her next project good luck getting rid of her. But otherwise she’s one of the sweetest people you’d ever meet. Loyal, steadfast, true, and very lovable when you come down to it. But for all her bravado and strength she has a delicate heart so handle with care.
Brief History:Erica is Caleb’s cousin. Seven years her cousin’s senior she doesn’t look it, in fact she looks like she could be his little sister, but the reverse has always been true. Caleb was like her little brother.
Coming from a pureblood line Erica knew exactly what was expected of her. She was to be a broodmare to some guy she probably wouldn’t be able to stand let alone love. There was briefly hope when her Aunt had married and found success in her first marriage and then again in her second to her now Uncle Edward. The Renneau’s had broken into a new level of prestige…actually a level they had never even dared look at in the past when her aunt married Edward. Previously they kept to pureblooded lines but of lesser import.
Erica began to see how hypocritical her family was when her uncle (Caleb’s father) died and no one could be bothered to lend a helping hand, but when her aunt had married Edward Montgomery, all of a sudden everyone wanted to be close to that side of the family. It was low and cruel and Erica had a distaste for it.
But the killing blow had been when her father told her she would marry. Erica had been twenty at the time which was past the usual time when a father would betroth a daughter. Some part of her had actually believed that her family would allow her to follow her heart and become a teacher instead of just marrying. Apparently that wasn’t the case, her father was merely waiting for the right offer to come along, and he found it in the image of a man thirty years her senior.
Her father never imagined that he was marrying her to an impotent man. An infliction had robbed him of that threat long ago.
To Erica’s relief however her new husband was a kind man he wasn’t looking for some young thing to warm his bed, but a companion to warm his heart. He struck a bargain with her as well, that if at any time she wanted out of the marriage he would with all haste get a quiet divorce. He had chosen her because he heard first of her age and not her beauty or the fact that she was really quite desirable. He had figured she would have been plain and on the shelf and would enjoy the independence marriage would offer to a man who was looking more for a caretaker than a wife.
But wife she became to him, in all ways but one, and strangely through time she came to love him very much. He was the kindest man she ever knew and as much as she took care of him, he took care of her. He introduced her to a world of independence. Where her past had been full of restriction and rules, he had none. Of course he expected her to act with decorum but she was permitted the same freedoms as a man, including a full education, she was allowed to continue her studies to be a teacher, to be anything she wanted, and he taught her how to run his estate. At the time she never believed he was teaching her how to take over things due to his imminent death. He had been sick as well when he asked her to marry him though he hid it well, he was dying and there was no one left for him in the world, his relatives were all greedily and eagerly waiting for his death so they could come in like a pack of vultures and steal away the money he had accumulated through the years, and while he was accepting that to be his fate, he never planned to love Erica the way he had. It wasn’t as if she were a daughter to him, for she was a fully grown woman and more capable than others of her ilk, but of course it wasn’t as if she were his lover either, instead she had become his best friend. Before he died he did something that was truly like the wily man, he left his entire fortune to Erica. Through special trusts all his land and money would go to the girl and her heirs.
She didn’t know that until a month after he had died.
Instead she had scraped together every penny she had to throw him the nicest funeral she could. The truth was she loved him very much, he too had become her best friend and his death was a crushing blow. She never knew complete love, or passionate love, but their love was a bonding of common souls and they were quite happy like that until cruel death robbed her of him. Greedy relatives would have robbed her of everything else if her husband hadn’t been as thorough as he had. Relatives couldn’t touch the money she now possessed and at 24 she was free to do whatever she pleased…but what did she please?
She stayed at the estates for a while running things that her steward was obviously capable of handling and then strangely was visiting her aunt at the Montgomery Estates and then learned her cousin was teaching now at Hogwarts…and she remembered…teaching…how she loved teaching and applied for a position, sadly there were none available.
Her aunt didn’t let her give up however, and suggested counseling. It was something Erica had always been good at, talking and helping people. She had helped Caleb as he struggled through his father’s death, she had helped her husband gain new life after he thought it was over, and had done the same thing with the people at her estates, in fact people were often coming to her for advice on this or that, or if they just needed to talk.
She talked with the headmaster this time and proposed the idea of having a student councilor on campus. She wouldn’t be dealing with student schedules or anything like that, but rather helping the kids with whatever emotional turmoil they might be going through.
She applied at the right time…it seemed a student had just died and she was the answer to a struggle just beginning.
After getting the job she packed her things and went to the school ready, and more than a little nervous to get to work.
