Whatever Evelyn's problem was, it was killing Rayne.
Whose the fool now? Why had she said that? Couldn't she see that Rayne just didn't want her to get hurt? Besides, whatever happened to friends first, boys second? Evelyn was seriously naive enough to believe that Rabastan liked her.
Since Rayne had been avoiding Nate, as well, she found her way to the owlry, and she sat back in a corner that was clean where she could watch them. Even if she wasn't avoiding Nate, she wouldn't have gone to him. It wasn't like her to go to people with her problems, but if she was, she would have realized that she needed to talk to someone.

For once, Nate was actually looking for Rayne. He'd just found out that Evelyn was going to the dance with Rabastan and he'd told Rayne he would help before. Even if she wasn't talking to him, he was going to keep his word. And now he was searching the castle for Rayne. He eventually found his way to the owlery by some nagging thought to try here, when he saw his beautiful Rayne sitting in the corner of the owlery.
"Rayne, I found you.. I've been... Rayne? Are you okay?" He noticed how her body looked ..defeated and angry. He wasn't sure which, really.. but she was obviously up here to be alone and that worried him. What had happened to make his firey angel look so alone like that? He went to her without even a second thought and sat next to her on the bench.

Rayne didn't even have a chance to stop what was happening. She turned and looked up at the intruder... at Nate, at her best friend, other than Evelyn, and she felt like she had lost both of them. She was just trying to help Evelyn...
Who would want to take her to the dance? Was Nate going to be "stuck" with her all night at the dance? Well, she wasn't going to give him the chance to take the question back. Once again, like she always did, she was going to leave before he could.
"You should ask someone else to the dance, Nate. I don't think I'm going."
But the part that Nate should not have been used to, however, was that she was crying. It would have been the first time he had ever seen her cry.

Nate frowned at first when she spoke and then he saw her start to cry. What the hell? Rayne was crying? He felt his chest rip in two and ache for her. He'd never seen her in tears and it hit him to the core that his beatiful and fiery Rayne was crying. He imediately knelt in front of her, he didn't care if she pushed him away. "Rayne if you don't go to the dance then I am not going either. I'm not going to ask anyone else to the dance, even if you don't go with me." He reached out to comfort her.

Sometimes, no matter how hard you pushed people away and how hard you tried to be strong, you needed someone. People like Rayne always slipped up from time to time because mankind was not meant to go at it alone.
For whatever reason, everything seemed like too much for her to handle. The death of the student that could have been any of them, the impending heartbreak of her best friend, and the words from Evelyn that put doubt into her head about Nate.
When he reache out to comfort her, she slipped up. For a brief moment, that brick all she had built so high came tumbling down, and she reached forward, throwing her arms around his neck.

Nate held her, comforted her and said soothing words in her ear softly that everything would be okay and how he wouldn't leave her and that it was okay to cry, that he was there for her. Nate did the only thing he could in that moment, he didn't leave her... instead he held her, supported her, hugged her, and comforted her. And he wanted nothing more than to be there for her and take all her pain away.
He wraped her protectively in his arms and held her head close while she cried. Nate softly kissed her temple soothingly and his fingers stroked her hair comfortingly. He didn't know why she was crying, but he knew better than to ask unless she told him. All he could do is be there for her and hold her close.

She cried harder when he said he wouldn't leave her. She could be so cruel when she pushed him away, and she knew it. But he never let her. He fought not to leave, and Rayne just hadn't figured that out yet. She held on to him now like she was scared that if he pulled away, she would just fall apart.
Later, of course, that wall would be back up... well, most of it. But Nate, now, would forever be holding one of the fundational bricks.
"I don't want you to be stuck with me and be miserable all night," she whispered to him through her thick tears.

"I would not have asked you to the dance if I was going to be miserable with you there. I want to go to the dance with you Rayne, and if you don't go with me than I'll be stuck and miserable in the common rooms by myself because I wouldn't want to go without you." It was the simple truth, and he said it softly as he held her while she cried.
He didn't know how long she'd let him hold her, but he was grateful that she was letting him for what little time she would. It meant a lot to him to be there for her when she needed someone, he would always be there when she needed him... even if she would never admit to needing anyone. This proud female always seemed to hold everyone at bay, needing no one. But Nate knew that everyone needed someone, even if it was only to hold them when they cried. And he would accept any little thing she'd let him do for her, he wanted to be there to support her and make her see that everything would be okay... that he wasn't going to leave her.

Rayne didn't know why she couldn't stop crying. Evelyn was her best friend, so of course what she said was going to affect Rayne. If even her best friend hated her when she was *trying* to be happy for her, how could Nate be telling the truth when he said he wanted to go to the dance with her?
"Evelyn said I would make you miserable, and I think she's right."

Nate wondered why Evelyn would say such a thing, it wasn't even remotely true. In fact it was quite the opposite, the only time he was miserable was when Rayne was too upset with him to talk to him like she had been lately. He spoke softly, "The only way you'd make me miserable is if you didn't let me take you to the dance."

Rayne just shook her head. "I don't want to go to the dance anymore, Nate, and it has nothing to do with you. I'm sure Eves doesn't want me there and I honestly just... I give up."
She was on a roll now, and she was still crying, unable to stop that. "She wants to get hurt by him, that's fine. I don't card anymore. I don't care what she does, but she didn't have any right to say what she did to me. I was just trying to help her! He's going to hurt her, Nate."

Nathan's head slowly began to spin as Rayne's words assaulted him continuously. What had happened between Rayne and Evelyn? Rayne seemed to be be pretty tore up, so what it was must of been something big. "Rayne who cares what Evelyn wants? Last time I checked....you were the one running your own life." The words just seemed to slip out, a bit of anger was building inside him toward Evelyn for hurting Rayne this badly. "Rayne what happened? Did some guy...hurt you?" He couldn't believe he was asking such things, yet she had referred to a guy and to the situation between herself and Evelyn.

"What?" Rayne asked, confused for a second. Then, she shook her head. "No," she told him, frustrated. "It's Rabastan. He asked Eves to the dance, and she said yes, and you know what Rabastan's like. He's going to hurt her, and I just want her to not have to go through that. And she's mad at me and said that I just want everyone to be as miserable as I am, and that no one would want to go to the dance with me."

Nate held back the outburst that was forthcoming as Rayne said Evelyn was taking Rabastan to the dance. That was one Slytherin, Nate would much prefer see disappear off the face of the planet than have to suffer his presence upon the wizarding world. "Rayne...Rabastan is a slime and a creep, he only cares about himself and yes he is going to hurt Evelyn. Yet if Evelyn is getting so worked up about it, then let her get hurt. Let her see you were just working out for a friend..."
He paused for a moment to hold Rayne in silence, to let her tears flow onto him. "Rayne she was wrong about one thing, there is no one else alive that i'd rather be at the dance with than you..." He began to feel himself blush at his own comment yet it was true, there was no one else he could think of that he'd rather accompany to the dance.

Rayne didn't answer him for a moment, and just took deep breaths to try and calm herself down. She needed to listen to him. He was right. Rayne was telling Evie things that she didn't want to hear, and so Evie was taking it out on her.
She finally nodded and pulled away from Nate, wiping at her tears and trying to stop them. She was trying to regain control of herself, actually, and put that wall back up that said she didn't need anyone. She had a moment of weakness, and it was over now.
