Theo stared into the crackling flames as they consumed the logs in the fireplace. The flames cast a flickering light around the dark common room, which was currently empty with the exception of Theo. It was just before curfew, and the students were trying to get the most out of the time they had left by gallivanting around the school. He was so transfixed with the flames that he didn't notice the sounds of someone entering the common room.

Laura had been wandering the castle, deep in thought ever since dinner was over. She hadn't even realized where her feet were taking her until she ended up at the potrait of the Fat Lady. "Fortuna major," she mumbled quietly. The potrait door swung open and Laura stepped into the dimly lit and seemingly empty common room. She released a relieved breath and was about to slump into one of the over stuffed chairs when she noticed some one sitting in front of the fire. Inwardly she cursed, she was hoping to think in silence for the few precious minutes she had left before curfew- apparently that was not going to happen. He didn't appear to even notice her, his gaze was fixed on the fire. Maybe she could quietly sneak up to her dorm before he tried to engage her in a conversation, she just wasn't in the mood to talk. She quietly stepped onto the red carpet and began to make her way to the stone steps when she tripped over the corner of the carpet, her shoes making a scuffing noise on the stone floor. She froze in a crouching position, silently praying that the boy didn't hear the deafening disturbance.

A loud shuffling noise brought Theo out of his unfocused stare. He whipped his head around to identify the source of the strange noise and saw a girl half standing and half crouching. Her palms were planted on the carpet, as if she had caught herself before falling. She had an amusing expression on her face, like a deer caught in headlights. He let out a chuckle at the whole situation, earning a glare from the girl. "Are you alright?" He asked, trying to mask his smile.

She realized as she caught herself from falling, how silly she looked at that moment. As he smiled at her strange position, she felt a blush creep onto her cheeks. To remedy that- she sent him a glare and righted herself to a standing postion. "I'm fine," she said a bit shortly, as she crossed her arms protectively over her chest. An ominous silence filled the common room, and Laura's temper fizzled out. "My name's Laura," she introduced herself somewhat awkwardly, and began to cover the distance between the two of them.

It was obvious she was embarrassed, her cheeks were tinged a dull pink. Theo managed to stop smiling and waited to see if she would run for the dormitories, or have the courage to stick around and talk. She finally introduced herself, after a long and somewhat uncomfortable silence. "Nice to meet you, I'm Theo Morris," he said in a friendly tone, waiting for her to take a seat by the fire. "I don't think I've seen you around much, what year are you in?" She definitely wasn't in his year, or she would have been in at least one of his classes, and she didn't look old enough to be in seventh year.

"Fifth year," she said as she settled into one of the crimson arm chairs surrounding the fireplace. "And I believe you're in sixth, right?" Laura was pretty sure she had seen him around the school, in the corridors and at least twice in the common room, but she didn't know his name until now. He seemed nice enough, and he was quite good looking.

Theo nodded at her question and shifted his gaze back to the fire. From the corner of his eye, he could see her turning her body towards the fire as well. "So why were you in such a rush to get to the dormitories? Am I that intimidating?" he asked with a smile as he studied her briefly. Her long hair had fallen to the right side of her face, exposing the pale skin of her left cheek. When he looked closer he could see a few freckles sprinkled across her cheekbones.

"Intimidating? No, not really," she laughed. "I just wanted to sort some thoughts out before everyone rushed into the common room," Laura explained. As of late she'd been confused by her feelings towards Devin, and didn't know if she was making a mistake or not. "And judging by how intensely you were staring at the fire when I walked in, you also wanted to do some thinking tonight," she stated with a smile playing at her lips.

"Not thinking, just relaxing," he corrected her. He was about to ask her what she needed to sort out when the portrait door swung open and a gaggle of fourth years burst into the common room, followed by a few third years. The noise level raised considerably, and Theo realized that whether or not he wanted it to be, their conversation was over.

Laura could see him forming a question on his lips, but he was cut off by a crowd of people bursting into the room. Her vision of Theo was blocked by some giddy first years talking animatedly about their Charms class. So with a slight smile, she rose from the armchair and began to navigate around the suddenly crowded common room to the stone staircase. She looked back over her shoulder briefly to see if she could spot Theo, but without any luck she headed up the stairs and into the fifth year dormitory. It was completely empty- and quiet. This was what she craved all night, so why wasn't she happy?
