After tickling the pear on the portrait door, Laura felt Devin take her hand in his. She was too surprised to pull away, and even then she probably wouldn't have. There was something in the way he said he'd make sure she wouldn't regret this, that made her somewhat uneasy but before she had time to think it over a tiny gasp brought her out of her thoughts. There standing in front of them was a wrinkly old house elf clad in a tea towel with the Hogwarts logo. Besides a handful of elves, the kitchens were completely empty.

Devin lead Laura over to a chair that was often used by students sneaking into the kitchens for food when they didn't want to go up to the Great Hall. He let go of her hand and pulled the chair out for her to sit at the small wooden table. He generally ignored the castle elf until Laura was sitting down and then he turned to the wrinkly old elf while he spoke to Laura still, "What would you like to eat, my lady? I'm sure that Garl here will be happy to make it for you." He happened to know most of the elves names, though it wasn't out of any real interest in the elves themselves. But he found girls were generally impressed when he seemed to care enough to learn them.

Laura had to admit that Devin could be quite charming when he wanted to. She wasn't impressed or anything. The house elf, Garl as Devin called him, was staring at her with big blue eyes as she thought about her decision. It was pretty cold outside today, and she didn't want Garl to go to too much trouble. "Chicken soup is fine, Garl." She smiled at the little creature before turning her attention back to Devin. "So you must have been down here a few times to know his name, huh?" Laura asked innocently. The truth was she wondered just how many girls he had taken down here to do merlin knows what. She allowed her elbow to rest on the wooden table and cupped her cheek in her hand.

"Yes I do," Devin admitted honestly. "I happen to like eating alone without crowds around. Besides you get better choices when you get to know the ones cooking your food. It's nice to come down here and eat sometimes." He ordered the same as Laura to the elf and then went to sit in the chair across from her. "And for the record I happen to know all the castle elves by name." It made for good room service when you did too. And room service was handy when you took girls to your bed. His face was kept completely friendly and charming, though he was mentally wondering what she would look like on a bed.

Laura understood why he preferred the quiet atmosphere of the kitchens over the chaotic noise in the Great Hall. It was difficult to eat with hundreds of conversations taking place around you. She shifted slightly on her seat, resting her other elbow on the table and leaned forward. "And here I thought you were like all the other spoiled Slytherins, viewing elves as slaves," she said evenly, staring him directly in the eyes. Although Laura was a supporter of elf rights, she was more interested in figuring Devin out at the moment- subtly of course. He had gotten a strange glimmer in his eyes as he remained deep in thought, and she wondered once again what was going on under that carefully charming mask.

Devin chuckled at her response, "I admit to having a few house elves at my home, but that doesn't mean I'm cruel to them either. And you really shouldn't stereotype people, that's very rude you know. How would you like it if I stereotyped you?" He was turning the tables on her, showing her that she was slightly judgmental and holding grudges when she didn't judge him on his own standing as she met him. He gave her a hurt look.

He had her there. There was that hurt look he had flashed at her while they sat near the lake- the reason why she found herself down in the kitchens in the first place. She knew it was uncalled for to throw that line out, but she wanted to see his reaction to be labeled as a 'spoiled Slytherin'. "You're right, that was pretty rude. But I am curious to know what you would label me as," she finished quietly, leaning back in her chair.

"For being a Gryffindor? I guess as a spoiled slytherin, I'd be obligated to call you a goody goody who always does the right thing and doesn't let fear get in their way. Or something like that, but I'm really not into labels so that would be the best I could come up with sorry. I don't hold grudges against other houses. It's not your fault you aren't ambitious enough to be slytherin, right?" He winked at her, teasing her. He was telling the truth at least.
He wouldn't be in any house but Slytherin, it was true and he was all the things she'd called him. But he didn't mind if the girl in his bed was Slytherin or another house... and usually he prefered if they weren't Slytherins. There was more challenge in the other houses and hence more interest in them too.

"That sounds pretty accurate," she laughed. She could be somewhat of a goody goody at times. "Maybe ambition just means something different to me than it does to you." She knew that everyone had a little bit of each house in them, but her Slytherin side was very faint. True, she strived for greatness, but there was an invisible line that she was careful never to cross. After all, how could you want something so badly that you were willing to manipulate and hurt anyone who got in the way of your goal? It just made no sense to Laura. She knew she was in over her head with Devin at the moment. Better girls had been seduced by his charm, so what chance did Laura stand in this cat and mouse game they were playing? "What sort of things do you strive to accomplish?" She asked after a few moments of thinking.

"Haha.. when I figure that out I'll let you know. But for now, I just will keep my father's publishing company profiting, the charities still being donated to and maybe find a future Mrs. Sheppard along the way. Isn't that what all good pureblood traditionalists try to do? After all I believe that's another one of those stereotypes of yours I'm supposed to live up to." He was smiling and had a friendly teasing light in his eyes.

"Well those are all good goals," she admitted, and she wasn't being sarcastic- after all how bad could some one be if they owned charities? "Although I may have my Slytherin stereotypes they don't include marriage- so long as it's for love and not money or social standings. But I'm done trying to judge you for now," she joked as she picked at a knot on the table. She preferred this boyish side of Devin over the intense and somewhat intimidating side of him. It made her feel more comfortable and relaxed, like she didn't have to constantly be on guard. Maybe she would enjoy spending the day with him after all.

"How generous of you, Laura." He teased at her words on not judging him anymore. His mental scorecard, of course checked off the second box in his head. The only person who had ever not succumbed to his charm was his step-sister. But only beacause she knew how to pull his strings and knew what truth lay behind his many well placed and well practiced masks. He could be anything and anyone he needed to be, but in the end he always had one goal in mind.. to chase away the boredom and emptiness that haunted him... and in the arms of girl in the case of her, the persuit filled him with that ever elusive thing he needed that even he couldn't name.
"So tell me what things you enjoy doing... what things make you smile?" Of course, he intended to see what things she enjoyed so he could make her enjoy her day with him, want to be with him and maybe even eventually give in to him.

What things made her smile? This was a hard question for Laura to answer, for she could be found smiling at some random comment, or laughing at a gesture that no one else noticed. "Well I like flying I suppose, and music- both magic and muggle bands." In her opinion, the muggle records were way better. "I don't have very exciting hobbies," she admitted with a small smile on her face. Her favorite thing to do was to just sit in the common room at night with the fire blazing in the background, playing various games of exploding snap and wizards chess with her house mates.

Devin pulled out his wand, cast a silent spell and smiled as a small boquet of flowers appeared out of the end of his wand. He took them and handed them to Laura. "How about flowers?" The tigerlillies and irises were vibrant and beautiful and he wondered if she was the flowers type of girl. She was right, she didn't have exciting hobbies... but every girl liked a little bit of fun and fancy.

Laura watched in amusement as Devin conjured a bouquet from his wand. "Flowers are good too," Laura agreed with a laugh, as she accepted the radiant flowers. He was certainly laying the charm on thick, and Laura found that it was getting harder and harder to resist. "What about you, what things do you do in your spare time?" she asked as she admired the lilies and irises in her closed hands.

Devin nearly smiled as Laura asked him what he liked to do in his spare time. He wondered how she would react if he responded with the truth. Yes, Laura I like to desecrate beautiful, young witches when i'm not busy... The words played in his head as he thought of a good cover up for the truth. "Well being the righteously spoiled Slytherin that I am...." He paused for a moment to wink at Laura, "I like to treat elves like less than dirt, study the dark arts and generally just hate everyone that is not me."
Closing the distance between them some, his eyes locked onto her's as he went in for the kill. "So tell me Miss Callaghan, was accepting my invitation as painful as you originally thought? Or could it be you might actually be having a good time?"

"Ok, ok I get it," Laura laughed as he listed off his alleged hobbies. "You're not who I thought you were," she conceded with a playful smile. She had expected him to be arrogant and stuck up the whole day, but from the beginning he had been a perfect gentlemen- pulling the chair out for her and giving her flowers.
The teasing mood quickly changed to a more intense one as he drew closer and stared into her eyes. She was a bit surprised by the sudden change, but went with it. "I guess I was wrong about you," she admitted softly. "You're better company than I thought you would be."

Devin smiled as Laura admitted she was wrong about him, his eyes widened and his mouth dropped as he stumbled backwards a couple steps. "The lovely Laura Callaghan is admitting she was wrong about a Slytherin?" Looking around the kitchens for something that obviously wasn't there he turned back towards Laura with mock frown on his face. "There always seems to be a reporter from the Daily Prophet around except for when I need them.." He paused for a moment to chuckle at his own little joke.
Regaining his composure he settled for a small smile and to stare deeply into Laura's beautiful eyes. "I must admit myself Miss Callaghan, you've been quite a gem yourself doll." Smiling he looked past Laura wondering when the house elves would arrive with the food, the game always made Devin feel a tad famished. "So any other questions you'd like to ask me? My life is an open book for your prying eyes.."

"Don't get used to it," Laura warned him while laughing at his antics. "If there was a reporter in here, I would deny I ever said something like that," she teased. If Rita Skeeter had been hiding in the room, Laura would hex her before letting her leave with private information like that. It didn't have anything to do with Laura admitting she was wrong, it was just that she liked to keep her personal life private. Rumors had a way of getting around and blowing things completely out of proportion, and she wanted to avoid anything like that.
She was pinned by his gaze and lost her train of thought staring into his eyes. "Thanks," she mumbled, almost in a daze, but then mentally cursed herself for sounding so pathetic. Garl chose that moment to sweep in with two bowls and Laura broke eye contact to smile at him. He placed the food on the table, and with a low bow scuttled away to leave them to eat. She decided to start with some basic questions about his family, after all there was no need to cut straight to the serious ones. "Do you have any siblings?" she asked while adding some crackers to her soup.
