There was no use denying it, Arthur was depressed. Ever since Molly had, essentially, told him that they were over before they'd even begun, Arthur simply hadn't been himself. He was no where near as bad as Ted, but he was definitely not his usual, cheerful and friendly self. He kept yelling at people at the office, and spent a lot of time by himself, wishing things had turned out differently.
But most of all, he couldn't stop thinking about what might have been. Maybe they would have been the perfect couple. Maybe they would have gotten married and had 6 or 8 kids. Now he would never know. And the worst part was, there wasn't even a good reason for it. She dumped him because Ted broke up with Andromeda. What kind of reasoning was that, anyway? He really didn't understand women at all. He was very afraid that he was destined to be alone for the rest of his life. He'd probably die alone in his apartment one day and be eaten by doxies.
These depressing thoughts were weighing heavily on Arthur's mind as he went into the Leaky Cauldron for his regular drink. Only, instead of butterbeer, lately he'd been drinking firewhiskey.
Approaching the bar, he sat down and ordered a shot of firewhiskey, then buried his face in his hands miserably.

Gideon had been sitting at the bar too, before Arthur's mopey appearance. It seemed Arthur hadn't recognized him. Maybe he hadn't even realized there was anyone else in the bar. He looked awful. He couldn't figure out why, as far as he knew everything in Arthur's department was going well. But then again, Gideon had been so swamped lately that he barely had time to leave his office. "Oi, Weasley. What's the matter?"

(OK, I swear I typed a response to this, and it was eaten by Proboards.)
Arthur was so caught up in feeling sorry for himself that he almost didn't hear the voice calling his name. When he did hear it, it seemed very far away, as if someone was speaking to him from one end of a tunnel. Looking up, he was surprised to see Gideon Prewett sitting not far away from him at the bar. Molly's brother.
Arthur sighed. "Oh, hi, Gideon," he said tiredly. "Nothing's wrong, I just... your sister's really frustrating, do you know that?"

Gideon huffed a laugh at Arthur's question. "Yeah, I knew it. What'd she do this time?" Molly was far too emotional and cared too much about other people's feelings, and in Gideon's opinion she pushed herself into other people's business more often than healthy. But she always had good intentions. So when Arthur mentioned Molly was frustrating, he assumed it had something to do with Andromeda and Ted Tonks.
((OOC: Its a conspiracy to drive us crazy, set up by the Proboards people and the Government. They're all in on it man.))

The shot of firewhiskey was set down in front of him, and Arthur took it and downed half of the shot glass at once. "It's crackers, mate," he said. "She won't see me anymore because of Ted and Andi. Ted's my friend, right? So just because I'm trying to be there for him, she thinks that means I'm as bad as him. That I'll do to her the same kind of thing Ted did to Andi, just because I'm his friend. What kind of bloody sense does that make?"

Yup. That sounded like Molly to him. So over emotional that she can't separate Andromeda and Ted's relationship from her own. Gideon didn't neccessarily want Molly dating Arthur, or anyone really. Big brother syndrome; no one was good enough for her. But despite that, he knew Arthur had probably done nothing wrong and was getting the short end of the stick. "She was paranoid about Ted before there was anything to be worried about. And I am certainly not taking her side in this mate, 'cause let's face it, Molls is a loon sometimes. But what Tonks did was pretty bad. And you know how women get. They'd switch their opinions if their girlfriends did. They think we're the same, I guess." Gideon certainly did not want to be encouraging Arthur to go after his little sister, but Molly really had been ridiculous if what Arthur said was true.

Arthur sighed and took another sip from his shot glass. "I know, she told me she didn't like him much when she first met him. I think they got off on the wrong foot. But... look, Ted had his reasons why he did what he did. I don't agree with them, but trust me when I say Ted's about as miserable as Andromeda is right now. And even if I think he's being a stupid git, he's still my friend, and I want to be there for him."
He shook his head and looked at Gideon seriously. "Look, I know I barely just met Molly, and I probably have no right to be so upset about this, but I really liked her... She actually listened to me when I talked about stupid stuff, and didn't mind when I was making an arse of myself that first night... And I never would have hurt her. I wouldn't have done what Ted did."

He was glad Arthur didn't go into detail of his short-lived relationship with Molly. But the fact that it was short-lived, when she had seemed so head over heels for him earlier...it made Gideon want to help. "Look, I can't promise anything because Molly can be stubborn. And she thinks any romantic advice me or Fabian give her is a load of Hippogriff dung, but I can talk to her. I know you're a good guy, mate. Even if you are bit batty for wanting to date Molly." He gave Arthur a friendly punch in the arm.

Arthur perked up a little at this. "Really? You'd do that for me?" He grinned. "I really would appreciate it. I know I'm not the smoothest guy around, but I like her, and I'd be good to her. But she is crackers sometimes, isn't she? She went to yell at Ted for what he did to Andi, and I was afraid she was going to kill him!"
In a way, he actually rather admired the fierce way she defended the people she cared about. She was like a mother bear, ready to attack when she thought her cubs were in danger. He could almost picture her defending her children the same way, although he wisely chose not to mention this to Gideon.

"Sure I would. Besides, its not like I want to be bothered with her whining about you to me, now do I?" he joked. "And its to your benefit that you're not smooth Weasley. If you were, you wouldn't get even a toe past me or Fabian." Gideon could appreciate a guy who knew Molly was a loon but could still phrase it in a way that showed he cared. It was just another point in his favor.
"Yeah, before they even broke up Molls was going on about Ted. She really didn't trust him. I'm quite surprised we're not looking into his murder right now. But that's Molly for ya. Into everyone else's business. I hope you are expecting that. Not just when it comes to her family, either. But everything!"

Fabian had lost track of time, once again. He appeared in the bar a few minutes after Arthur did and walked up on the other side of Arthur. Giving Gideon a nod in greeting and patted Arthur on the back, having listened to part of their conversation which obviously was about Molly.
"Well Arthur, I think you'd be perfect for Molly," Fabian spoke up. "She's always going and you're calm, however like Gideon said you have to be expecting everything. Don't worry Arthur, we know that you're not Ted. I'll also talk to Molly and see if she will listen. Maybe between Gideon and I we can get you another meeting with her."

Arthur smiled at both of them. "Thanks, guys. Really. I just... I know Molly can be difficult. But I feel like there was something... or there could have been. I barely even got to know her, and she shut me out for something that wasn't even my fault. I just want to get a chance to get to know her better, you know?" He took a drink from his glass and looked from one of them to the other. "I'd never hurt her, I swear."

Gideon clapped Arthur on the back reassuringly. "Yeah, we know. Just leave it to us Arthur." Gideon looked over to Fabian. "This isn't like pimping out our baby sister is it?" he asked with a laugh.

Arthur looked back and forth between the two brothers. He sometimes wished he had a brother to confide in. At least, if things worked out with Molly, maybe he would have two brother-in-laws he could talk to.
Wait... was he really thinking that? He really barely knew Molly... they had only talked to each other three times. And he was already thinking of marriage? This was crazy. He had to stop getting ahead of himself.
"I promise you, my intentions are honorable," Arthur said. "I mean... even if she doesn't really like me that way, I wouldn't mind just being friends with her, if that's what she wants. It's just that right now, she doesn't even want that and it's not even my fault."

"Course your intentions are honorable Arthur," said Fabian. "It's not like your going to just kidnap Molly and just have your way with her. You wouldn't do anything of the sort, because you're not the type. You're more of the type that wants to just date her and possibly go a step further when the time is right."
He sighed. Fabian trusted Arthur with Molly, and honestly, Arthur would probably be the only one that he would ever trust with her. "I tell you what Arthur. I can attempt to put in a good word for you with her."

Gideon would have rather not thought about anyone, Arthur included, having their way with his little sister, but Fabian always did have that certain way of talking that made things come out all wrong and all right at the same time. He knew what his brother had meant, even if it was a little overstated for Gideon's liking. "Right. Not to worry. Fab and I've got it all taken care of. You just sit there and drink, mate. Molly'll come 'round in no time."

Arthur smiled and raised his glass in the air. "Cheers, mates," he said. "I really appreciate it. I like Molly a lot. I don't even know her all that well yet, but what I know I think is just... adorable. She can be sweet and funny, and a little shy... but she's also loyal and fights for the people she loves. I just want to get to know her better."
He didn't know why, but he felt like he needed to explain his intentions and his sincerity to Fabian and Gideon. Maybe he was overstating his case a little, but he didn't know what else to say. "And the fight... it was silly. She wasn't even mad at me, she was mad at Ted. And I'm mad at him too, when it comes down to it."

Fabian nodded to Arthur before taking a drink of his own. "As long as you don't get too detailed with us, I think everything will be just fine," he said teasingly. He gave a look to Gideon, then back to Arthur. "Yeah, she does tend to take her anger out on the first person she runs into, or knows. Sorry 'bout that, but we'll have everything underway even if we have to tie her up, right Gid?" Fabian was only kidding about actually tying Molly up, and he made sure that his facial expression showed that he was.
"I can see why she would be mad with him, as for you too. But anyway." he turned to Gideon, remembering what he said eariler. "No, Gid, we're not pimping Molly out, we're just giving her a little push is all," Fabian said with a grin.

Arthur laughed nervously. "No... no... I wouldn't give any details or anything. Not that there'd be anything to keep secret or anything. Just... you know, um... I respect her, is all."
He cleared his throat and turned back to the subject of Ted, which was easier to talk about. "Well, you know, I told Ted he was being a git. No mater what happened, I think he's still in love with Andromeda. I don't understand why he did what he did... he's not exactly making sense these days."
