Obstacle One.
The students as they went along searching for the pendants were to come across several obstacles at which point Nikita would be discreetly watching to see how the students handled said obstacles and pending upon their grade and skill level she would know where she was going with her teaching for each individual student.
It was unconventional that was the only word about it, she was trying something new and seeing where it took them.
Their first obstacle had been their clothing. Nikita didn't expect the students to do the tasks she laid out for them in their robes so they changed, and pending upon what they changed into she gave them marks.
Next was entering the jungle itself, she was looking for signs of ingenuity anything that the students did to help make the assignment easier on themselves or their partners, she awarded points individually as well by teamwork.
Once the students were in the jungle Nikita's first "test" was a river that needed to be crossed. It would be simple enough.
Her initial worry that there would be difficulties for first and second years vanished when the school decided to break up her classes. She would be able to test the older kids a bit more difficultly.

Samantha, who had already summoned her broom, decided to get back down at floor level. She figured she had the right direction at least it looked that way in the "sky" but there were supposed to be markers on foot so it was better to go down and make sure she was following the right path.
She saw the markers and followed them until she got to a river. Crossing it would be simple enough with her broom which she already had but as she glanced around she began to realize that this was some sort of test to pass by getting across the river. She imagined students before her and after her transfiguring a boat to pass or perhaps some other way of getting across. She started to see this more and more like a game.
