After Herbology Evelyn couldn't get back to the Gryffindor tower fast enough. She had to tell Rayne about Rabastan taking her to the dance. Perhaps this would help mend their shaky friendship. She knew Rayne didn't like Rabastan, she made that perfectly clear. But Rayne only thought Rabastan was using her, or any girl for that matter. But he wouldn't have asked Evelyn out if he was using her!
She gave the Fat Lady the password too loudly and was in the middle of being scolded by the painting when she ducked into the open doorway and entered the common room. She looked around for red hair. "Rayne!"

"What?" She asked, irritated when she heard her name yelled out like that, but she didn't realize who was calling her.
She glanced up, regarding Evelyn. They actually hadn't sat down and talked in a while, and she thought Evelyn was going to yell at her, but she looked far too happy to be angry.
"What's going on, Eves?"

Evelyn bounded over to where Rayne sat and practically jumped on her lap. She was so excited she didn't even notice the snappy way Rayne had initially responded to her name. "Guess who has a date to the Yule Ball!" She was squealing with delight, bouncing softly on the cushions of her seat with the largest smile known to man plastered on her face.

"I'm guessing it's you," Rayne deadpanned. It wasn't that she was studying or anything and disliked being interrupted, although that was part of it. The truth was, she held grudges for a while, and she didn't understand how she was already bouncing around.
She sighed, though, and smiled. "So, give me the details."

She was not too excited to overlook Rayne's continuing attitude and she pushed herself back on her seat, crossing her arms. "Why do you have to be like that all the time Rayne? I thought you'd be happy for me, but you're just as bitter as always. Merlin, what is your problem? Do you want everyone to be miserable like you or just me?"

"I just asked you for the details," Rayne snapped. "But I'm sorry I'm not cheering and doing cartwheels for you. I'll try to work on my enthusiasm."
She leaned back in her chair and opened her book again. She was more than ready to fight with Evelyn, but what good would it do? The girl was her best friend, but she was letting some stupid school girl crush on a guy who would never like her back come between them, and Rayne resented it.

"I'm not deaf. I know what you said. It was how you said it. I'm not stupid either, so stop acting like I don't get you and how you are. I have such exciting news, and you were the first person I thought to tell. And of course you take all the fun out of it with your surly demeanor." She was quite used to Rayne's attitude by now but when it came to Rabastan Lestrange everything Rayne did surprised Evelyn. "I thought this might make it better. Make us better."

Rayne was getting increasingly frustrated. "There's nothing wrong with us, Eves. Your mad at me because I think your a fool for liking Lestrange so much. That's fine, I'm sure you'd die laughing if I told you who I was going to the Yule Ball with. You have good news, so I want-"
She trailed off. Evelyn had come bouncing into the room so happy, and she could only think of one guy who could make her that happy.
"You're going to the dance with Rabastan?"

Rayne sounded neither pleased nor displeased with the realization that Rabastan and Evelyn would be attending the dance together. Evelyn ignored this fact, and was going to simply answer her friend's question. The mention of Rabastan had made her once again giddy and she bounced a little one her seat as she leaned forward with an excited grin. "Yes. He asked me in Herbology. I was a little dumbfounded at first so I didn't say anything. Because, well you don't think he likes me and I kept hearing you nagging me about it. But when I didn't answer he got upset. So who's the fool now?" Her question was not a mean one, and said with a light tone that implied a joking manner. Of course, she had said it before she thought about it and given their past remarks she now hoped Rayne wouldn't think she was calling her a fool.

Rayne's face fell into a deep frown.
"When he dumps you and you're crying, you can forget about me being supportive or offering kill him or anything. I mean, the knowledge of *me* being the fool should be enough to get you through." She slammed her book shut and got to her feet, angry at that comment more than anything else. She wanted to pretend to be happy for Evelyn, but she was making it difficult. Calling Rayne a fool was unncessary.

She stood too when Rayne got mad at her. She should have expected it. "You call me a fool all the time Rayne! Merlin, you're such a hypocrite! I know you're just jealous because I'm happy, and because Rabastan asked me to the dance. Who are you stuck with? Anyone at all? I doubt it, Christ who would want to take you anywhere?!" She turned and stormed out of the room before Rayne had a chance to do it first. It was days like these that made Evelyn wonder why she was friends with Rayne at all.
