"Correction," Ursula said sharply. "You didn't want to raise your daughter. When you have children, you take responsibility for another life, and apparently you just couldn't do that, could you? I raised my daughter to make her own decisions, and to be a strong and independent young woman. It was hard as hell, and sometimes I wanted to give up. But I didn't, and I am proud of what Nathalia became. The Scotts didn't hide from their responsibilities, nor did the Burkes. It just seems to me that you took the easy way out by making excuses and sending your daughter off to live with someone else. I wouldn't blame the girl one bit if she wanted nothing to do with you. A parent is the one that sticks around, not the one who passes the buck."
Shaking her head in disgust, Ursula stood up from the table. "I can't talk about this with you anymore. Not here. If Nathalia shows up, tell her I was feeling sick."

As if on cue, Nathalia came into the restaurant and shrugged out of her cloak so that they could take it, and she politely told them that she could find her way to the table on her own.
She frowned when she came to them, however. Her mother was standing and they all seemed angry. Wonderful... she should have shown up after a bottle of wine was finished.
"Hi Kara, Uncle Ken," he was the only one of her aunts and uncles that she actually put the title in front of his name. "Mum."

Ah, there you are, Thalia, darling," Ursula said, her voice softening as she moved to put her arms around her daughter. "Your aunt and uncle and I were having a disagreement." She gave a wry smile, knowing Nathalia would not be surprised. She and Ken both had hot tempers, and had been known to have a few nasty blow-ups in the past. It usually got worse when Kara was involved. "I was just leaving."

Ken sat in shocked silence as Ursula began to verbally punish them for some crime they seemed to have unknowingly committed. He tried to get angry, wanted to get angry yet deep down he knew she was partly right. They were scared when they gave up their daughter, they were scared that those who would try and stop their cause would use their daughter. The Ministry was getting desperate as the Dark Lord predicted and the Auror's were taking extreme measures to find and arrest Death Eaters.
As Ursula stood up to leave, Ken was about to get up to stop her when Nathalia interrupted them. Smiling at his precious niece he heard Ursula say she was leaving. Standing up he hugged Natty, "It's always good to see ya Nat darling." Letting go of his niece he turned to his sister and gave her that stern grow up look. "Ursula, I apologize I thought the news that you may have a niece to dote upon would be happy. You've been gone we will talk of other things, I've missed you sis."

"What?" Nat asked. She just got here, and they had already gotten in a fight. "Mum, wait, I'll keep the peace," she whispered to her mother, but was pulled into a hug by her uncle, and everything kind of happened at once, and she wasn't sure what she was pulled into the middle of.
"Neice? What, I have a cousin? When did this happen?"
Judging by her mother's anger, it happened a while ago.

Ursula sighed. "Yes, darling, apparently, you do. She's sixteen and has been living with Kara's squib sister all this time." She shook her head disapprovingly. "I'll stay, but I really don't want to talk about this here. I've said my feelings on the matter, and I'm afraid nothing you can say will convince me otherwise. I think this was handled badly, but what is done cannot be undone. Just don't be surprised if your poor long-lost daughter is less than thrilled about your reappearance in her life."
She let out a long breath, then looked at Nathalia. "I am glad you could make it, dear. You look lovely as always." She sat down slowly, but it was obvious by the tension in her muscles that she was still angry.

Ken couldn't even begin to bring a smile to his face, he knew Ursula's reasons for being upset and he couldn't blame her. They thought what they had did back then was for Kat's best interest but Ken was thinking that maybe Kara and him hadn't been as wise as they originally thought. "The topic will change Ursie, I just wanted....her to feel accepted if she does come back.." Grabbing a chair for Lia, he moved it to their table. "Come you two, sit down and let me spread much praise over my lovely niece." Smiling he reached across the table and grabbed Kara's hand once more.
"Lia darling, how was America? Did you learn a lot about art?"

Nat was still a little overwhelmed and confused by all of this latest development, but she didn't say much. She gave her mother an sympathetic look, and took a seat at the table, turning her attention back to her uncle Ken.
"It was great, Uncle Ken. In fact, I'm renting an apartment in New York... I'll go back eventually."

Ursula was slowly calming down, but she was still irked at Kara for her earlier comments about her lifestyle choice. Yes, of course, her unorthodox choices were often a source of controversy, but to suggest that she was in any way shirking her "duty" to the family by refusing to find a nice man to settle down with, and having a child out of wedlock, was an insult that Ursula couldn't quite tolerate. She and Kara had never really got along particularly well, and now Ursula remembered why.
Some people would tell her that she was too old to go through a fit of rebellion, but Kara's comments had her so annoyed, she was seriously considering finding some really inappropriate new girlfriend and flaunting it shamelessly. Perhaps a muggle woman who worked at one of those "gentlemen's clubs."
"I always meant to go to New York when I was younger," Ursula remarked to Nathalia. "Maybe next time you go, you could bring me. That is, if you don't mind hanging out with your old Mum."

Nat could still sense the tension at the table, but she just nodded and pretended it wasn't there.
"Of course I wouldn't mind, Mum. You and I would have a great time in New York. I could take you to a Broadway show... Cats is huge right now. Creepy, if you ask me, but what do I know? Anyway, we'll plan for that. Catch me up on London, will you?" She asked the three at the table.

Kenneth refused to let the tension bring down the whole table. He didn't think his sister had much of a right to tell them their choice had been wrong... look at her own daughter, for Merlin's sake. He adored Nathalia, and it wasn't her fault that she was born to the black sheep of the family, but he saw a lot of Ursula in her, and he just wished he could set her on the straight path before it was too late, if it wasn't already.
"London's the same drab, boring city you left it as, Lia," he told her, a smile set on his lips. "Nothing ever changes here, you know that."

Ursula, of course, thought her daughter was perfect. She was a free spirit, as Ursula had always hoped she would be. Free of all the rigid expectations that had been heaped on Ursula from the time she had been a little girl. She had almost been afraid that Nathalia's rebellion would be one in reverse, and that she would wind up more like Ken. Or worse, like her father.
There was a reason Ursula never mentioned Nathalia's father. It was only sheer luck that the best thing that had ever happened to Ursula came from the worst. One day, she would talk about him... but today was not that day.
"It's only really interesting when you're in town, darling," she said with a smile.
