"I'd consider it a lucky omen if you were jealous." he smiled, " Tell me Becky...I don't want to sound cliche, but what is a girl like you doing in a place like this?" he asked sliding over the fact that he did know the other girl. Perhaps it was just in his nature to make a girl feel beautiful and that's why he gave her his entire attention, though his eyes were soft, lingering as if he were slowly appreciating her. But the best thing about him had to be the fact that he was looking in her eyes, not at any other part of her anatomy, and not the fake stare that guys did until you turned so they could return their attention on your body. Not only was he looking at her eyes, but into them as if he knew some secret about her and he just couldn't wait to share it. The way he was looking at her made Becky feel warm and tingly inside. It occurred to her, in some distant part of her subconscious, that this was the kind of man who could easily seduce a woman with just his eyes and a few pretty words. But when he looked at her like that, she felt like the most beautiful girl in the world. She let out a giggle at the cheesy line. "Oh... you know," she said, shrugging nervously. "Just looking for a good time." Oh, Merlin... had she just said that? He was going to think she was easy now! She blushed deeply.

His eyes lit with a predatory gleam his niece momentarily forgotten, "I could show you a good time...if that's what your looking for." but the latter end of his statement was a subtle question, was she really looking for a good time? Or was she looking for something else? Something that wouldn't be found in a sordid one night stand, but that might have been found in a romantic evening for two.

Picking up his drink, he strolled casually over to the girl's table. "This seat taken?" he asked lightly. Veronica shook her head and motioned with her hand for him to have a seat. "No, it's quite empty. But you're welcome to join me if you'd like. I am just back in town and wouldn't mind the company. Do you come here often?" She was friendly, she had no reason not to be and just because the man was devastatingly handsome didn't mean he had any intentions other than to just for company for all she knew. Zachary sat down across from the woman. "I saw you from across the room, and I just couldn't stay away. It seems a crime that a woman as lovely as yourself should be in a place like this alone." He smiled at her and held out his hand. "Allow me to introduce myself. I'm Zachary Scotts."

So the man was handsome and charming, a dangerous combination but she didn't mind the company and his charms were not lost on her. His smile was sinful and she could feel the effects of such a smile as much as the next woman. "Veronica Massey, a pleasure to meet you Mr Scotts." She recognized the family name, anyone in their right mind in the wizarding world would but she wasn't overly impressed. Wizarding bloodlines had never held much meaning for her, she based each person on their own merrits.

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Veronica," he said casually. "I've only just got back into town after three years and was here to meet some friends, but they had... other... interests." He nodded towards Derek, caught up in conversation with Becky. Nathalia was heading for the door, a fact which did not escape Zach's notice and brought a smile to his lips. Apparently, the family charm extended to some of its female members as well.
Looking back at Veronica, he was tempted to ask her to dance, but he decided to take things slow. He still had his mind on Susie, and wasn't feeling inclined to make a move on another girl, even one as lovely as Veronica. "So, at the risk of sounding like I'm using a cheesy pickup line, do you come here often?"

Becky bit down on her bottom lip. She recognized that look. Usually she saw it on guys who were looking at Chloe, not her. But she had definitely seen it before. It was the look of a hunter having gained sight of its prey. The look that promised both pleasure and heartache. If you expected more out of it, that is. Becky had never done anything wild. Not really. She was the good little girl who always did the right thing. And maybe, just maybe, she needed to break out of that mold. To experience life a little, and just throw the consequences out the window. But she was nowhere near drunk enough to consider it. Not yet. "Tell you, what," she said brazenly. "Why don't you buy me a few more drinks and then ask me that question again?"

Derek eyed her with interest, and with a strange urge to say "boo" and see if she'd run away. She was debating with herself he could see that, but he was happily surprised when she asked for a few more drinks.
He glanced one more time over to where his niece was and his jaw dropped a little, she was gone...she already left with the russian...damn. He turned then and looked for both Edmund and Zach and they were both busy with their light o loves for the evening, there was nothing left but to enjoy the evening himself.
Glancing again at Becky the idea was appealing. Throwing all worry to the wind he gave her all of his attention once more and told the bartender to get the lady whatever she wished for.

Becky ordered something fruity and rum-filled from the bartender, then turned her attention back to him. As she did, she realized in a moment of horror that she had failed to get his name. Was she really considering what she was considering without even finding out the man's name? She felt instantly ashamed of herself.
The bartender placed her drink in front of her and she picked it up immediately and began to drink as urgently as a hiker stranded in the desert. Looking back up at him, she gave a shaky smile. "You know, you still haven't told me your name."

"It's Derek." he told her, he rarely told people his last name, usually because of the stir it created if there were any socialites around. Here in London however he was known for his family and his family's name, but in other parts of the world where he would have hoped to find anonymity he still made enough of a mark that the next time he was around he was recognized. Oh wouldn't his brother be proud to know that. He sighed a bit inwardly.
"Tell me a little about yourself Becky."

Becky took another sip of her drink. "Nice to meet you, Derek." She hadn't told him her last name, so she wasn't too concerned that he didn't share his. "There's not really much to tell. I work as a waitress at the Hot Panini and I just broke up with someone a couple of months ago... I haven't really been out since. Until now."

"And what are you hoping to find...now that you're out?" he asked, was she looking for a rebound? Was she looking for someone to fill the void? Was she looking for something permanent? It was all about her really, he kept himself apart, but he was very interested in what she had to say.

If she was honest with herself, Becky wasn't really sure what she was hoping for tonight. She really wasn't expecting to meet someone she could have a lasting relationship with. She wasn't even sure she wanted a lasting relationship right now. Something about this man told her that he was, very likely, the love-em-and-leave-em type. And she wasn't entirely sure she minded.
"I'm not looking for anything in particular," she said. "I'm still hurting from the breakup... so I'm definitely not ready for a relationship right now. I just want... to feel alive again. Does that make sense?"

"It makes perfect sense." he said gently. Derek may have been a love'em and leave'em kind of guy, but he didn't get his thrills from the predatory game. He liked making a woman feel beautiful, making her feel special, and they all were special, and he was generally still friends with a lot of the woman he had bedded in the past, he had a pretty good idea of where that line was...the one that you crossed into dangerous territory over love and he only had one or two bad breakups in the past.
"How long were you and ...the guy.. together?"

"So, at the risk of sounding like I'm using a cheesy pickup line, do you come here often?" Veronica smiled at his acknowledgement of the cheesy pickup line, he didn't seem overly forward and he had a sense of humor it seemed too. "I haven't been here in over a year, but I used to come here fairly often with my sister before I left. I just came into town again yesterday so I wanted to get out for the night. I have found that getting out to the local night life is a good way to meet people again, at least people I don't work with." She looked at Zachary curiously, he didn't seem to be truly coming onto her and she felt at ease talking to him so far. He was quite charming though and very handsome, she could only imagine how it would be if he actually tried to be forward and charming. "So if you've been gone for three years, what brings you back?"

Zachary's expression turned uncharacteristically somber. "Sometimes you just need to return to the comforts of home," he said simply. "I've wandered around a lot in my life, but it's good to know that there's still one place you can call home." He gave a short laugh to break the serious mood. "But enough about me. Tell me about yourself, Veronica. What have you been doing for the past year to take you away from hom?"

Veronica only raised an eyebrow at his comments and the mood that accompanied them. There was obviously mroe to the story but she didn't push the issue, it was really none of her business. When he asked about herself she felt th mood lighten again and responded with a half laugh, "Nothing so glamorous I'm sure as your own travels. I was away on an assignment for the Ministry, I'm afraid... work rather than pleasure. And another reason I'm here, to enjoy not working."

Zachary nodded his head and took a sip from his drink. "So you work for the Ministry, then?" he said. "That's pretty interesting. What department? Wait... let me guess." He leaned in a little, fixing her eyes on hers. "Let me see... you seem like the type who might be good with animals. Are you with the Department for Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures?"
He was relatively certain that she was not with that department at all. He was actually a pretty good judge of character, and could usually predict a person's line of work without much trouble. However, he also liked to get it wrong the first time, so as not to look too perfect.

And really... we probably would still be together.... but it's my fault we broke up. I kind of still have feelings for my first boyfriend... he was my first love, and I can't quite seem to get over him. But he's moved on... He has a girlfriend... they live together or something..." Becky paused and took another sip from her drink. "Jude told me he wanted to be with me, but that I had to let go of my feelings for Zander. I just.. I couldn't. Loving him is like breathing to me." She glanced up at him with her liquid brown eyes. "I guess that sounds kind of stupid, huh?"

Derek's brows rose, it was rare really to find someone who was willing to share their history without having at least three times the amount Becky had. Although from hearing what she was saying she had a complicated past romantically and he felt somewhat bad for her, and somewhat bad for whoever Jude and Zander were. "I don't blame either man for wanting you."

"Let me see... you seem like the type who might be good with animals. Are you with the Department for Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures?" "How did you guess?" He was completely wrong of course, but she wanted to throw him off just to see his charm slip and she really had no reason to just outright tell him the truth anyways. So what if he thought she was in a different department, she didn't really expect to see him again after tonight anyways and she had no major reason to tell him differently. Veronica just grinned back though, enjoying talking to someone that she wasn't working with or for.
