Justin didn't leave that room for a long time, lost in his own thoughts and thinking what a dolt his uncle was. Really he shouldn't care but regardless of his normal demenor towards women, when it came to his family he did care. He went back to his room finally, he knew things would work themselves out and he was sure they'd be back in a few hours anyways. So he spent the time finishing up his paperwork he'd been working on before Suzie arrived... waiting for them to return and give the results. He was sure Tanya would be at the hospital soon enough to find out the results anyways.

Suzie shook her head, unsure of what really to say to him. She was angry and hurt and alltogether untrusting, but he was saying things she wanted to hear, wasn't he? "Zach, if there was no baby, and I hadn't come back for you... you wouldn't have come back for me, would you? You wouldn't have fought for me." Zachary froze. How was he supposed to answer that? Yes, when he left, he fully intended to never see her again. But the longer he'd been away from her, the more empty he had started to feel. After leaving California, he had drifted for a while, meandering though one nameless little town after another. Instead of seeing himself as free and easy, he suddenly had felt disconnected and rootless, just wandering aimlessly with no direction and no goal. Somewhere around Chicago, he had finally decided that it was time to go home. He realized now that the need to go home had been a need to feel a connection with someone again, to ease the loneliness inside him. But even upon reuniting with his family and friends, he still didn't quite fit. With Susie he had found a home. Oh, Merlin, what in blazes had she done to him? These kinds of thoughts would never occurred to him before he'd met her. And even now, these thoughts scared the hell out of him. He wanted to fight for her, but he just didn't know how. "There's more to the story, Susie," he said, not quite answering her question. "I didn't just leave because he told me to. I told you I was also a gambler. He trapped me into a game, and he cheated. Before I knew it, I was down 10,000 galleons, and I couldn't pay it. If I could have... I wouldn't have run. But the only way he'd forgive the debt was if I never saw you again. So I let you go. I left. I've regretted it, but I didn't know what else to do. I... I thought about asking my brother for the money when I came back here..." He trailed off, not able to say quite what he was feeling.

"And... it's complicated, right?" Suzie asked. He couldn't answer her question, which to her meant that no, he would not have come back for her.
"I'm going to get a room to stay in once the test is taken. You'll tell your family it whatever you have to to make that okay, right?" Although she phrased it as a question, she meant it as a statement. He could at least do that for her.
She didn't care about the debt. He was running anyway, why couldn't he have run away with her?

It hurt that she didn't want to stay with him. He thought she was judging him for the debt, the gambling, and the attempted con. And Merlin knew he deserved it. He had done some pretty terrible things in the past. Some of them he knew he could never tell her about; she'd never forgive him. And if she was looking at him like that now, he could only imagine the hate and revulsion he'd see in her beautiful face if he told her some of the other things he'd done.
He didn't deserve her. He'd known it all along, of course, but in the beginning, he hadn't cared. Now that he could see himself reflected in her eyes, he hated himself as much as she surely did. "Won't you consider staying?" he said softly. "Just so I can be sure that you're OK?"

Justin decided he couldn't sit still after all and went in search of his aunt and father. When he came to them, they were talking in quiet tones. The only words he heard was debt and galleons and baby. He knew his uncle, enough to know what kind of issue he'd likely gotten himself into. He cleared his throat so they knew he was there. "Father, they went to the hospital a while ago... I think we should probably join them."

"Damn it," Thatcher almost growled. He should have known his brother would try and sneak off without them. He nodded to his son, and then motioned for Tanya to follow.
When they came to the hospital, he relied on Tanya to find the room the girl was in, and they arrived just in time to hear Zach ask her to stay at the house.
"Of course she'll stay," Thatcher said in a tone that was not to be argued, opening the door and allowing Justin and Tanya inside. He didn't care if he was irritating his brother, or invading either of their privacies.

Zachary let out a soft sigh. How was he ever going to make things right with Suzette if his family kept intruding? The thing he loved about Susie was that she had a mind of her own and was not afraid to stand up for herself. She had been angry with her father for setting her up to marry Taylor against her will, and it was part of the reason she'd taken up with him in the first place. Now she was in a situation where, if the child was his, she would probably be forced to marry him instead. And again, she would not be given a choice. He didn't want that for her. He wanted the best for her, even if he was reasonably certain he was not it.
Looking up at Thatcher, he narrowed his eyes. "As you can see, I haven't fled the country," he said. "We're still waiting for the test. Dr. Thomas is going to perform it."

Tanya swept in with her brother and nephew. Her eyes coldly staring at Zachary. The fool would probably just tell them anything he wanted them to hear and hell with doing the right thing for the family. But Tanya would not let that happen, she had enough sway in the hospital to find out what she needed even if it wasn't by approved means to do so. She didn't say a word though, truely with her expression no words were necessary. But she didn't look even once at the woman, although she did notice her nephew looking at he floor as he went to stand near the girl like some support dog, she would have rolled her eyes at him but she knew that his mind worked in odd ways and she really didn't try to bother figuring out why he'd suddenly alligned himself with the woman. Her focus remained squarely on Zachary.

"You haven't fled the country yet," Thatcher said, putting emphasis on the last word. He leaned against the wall, his arms crossed over his chest. "But you've been known to in the past."
He turned to Suzie, who was quiet, but this time not look away. She had an angry heat in her eyes that he almost respected. "If it's not a Scotts, you will never see me or Tanya again, I can garauntee it."

Zachary opened his mouth to argue, but quickly clamped it shut again. What could he possibly say? He couldn't deny that he'd run from trouble in the past. He had no intentions of running this time, but there was nothing he could say that would make them believe it. He had a pattern of leaving, just disappearing off the face of the planet, and he realized that everyone was expecting him to do it again.
The second part was the part that troubled him. Now that Susie was here, he couldn't bear the thought of losing her again. He was doing a terrible job of communicating that to her, and a part of him--the part that squirmed under Thatcher's critical gaze--felt she was better off without him. But one thing he was sure of was that he was not better off without her.
He folded his arms across his chest and stood mutely by Susie's bed. The sooner the test was done, the better.

((I love zach's new sig))
Danny came back inside the room with a tray of tools and looked up. "Oh. Hello," she said, slowly, glancing around. A whole audience wouldn't do.
"Can I please ask everyone except the potential fathers to clear the room? It's only because the procedure is... Invasive." she looked at Tanya. She would understand.

Tanya nodded when Danny entered, the less stress the girl was under the better for the baby and she would have said the same. Though she wanted to stay, she also knew the woman wouldn't be happy with her presense right now. "Suzette, would you rather have Zachary or Justin stay with you? You'll need to be under the least amount of stress and I don't want anyone getting in the way." Her look however was very pointedly at Zach that she would prefer if he went with Thatcher, they still had some things to discuss and she could tell the woman wasn't exactly calm around Zach yet.

Zachary shot an angry look at Tanya for even suggesting that Justin stay instead of him. He was the potential father, he should be here, not Justin. "I'm the potential father," he said briskly. I want to be here. You need blood from me, too, right?" He looked at Danny quickly, as if hoping for backup from her. How they could think he would be content to just sit back and allow Justin to hold her hand through this was appalling to him. Surely they didn't think him that heartless.

Suzie did not give Dr. Thomas a chance to respond, which was just as well. The doctor looked like she wanted to be anywhere but in the middle of their problems.
"Take his blood," she said, her voice low but determined. "And then I'll have the test done alone."

If Susie had been looking at Zachary at that moment, she would have seen the flicker of pain in his eyes. He felt the rejection acutely, but was quick to hide it. He had achieved a perfect poker face over the years, and only rarely had he let it slip. This was one of those times, but he assumed the mask very quickly. "I'm not going to leave you alone," he said firmly.

Tanya didn't show any expression but she gave Justin and Thatcher the look to go outside and then once they were out she followed behind them shutting the door firmly. "We'll wait right out side."

Suzie wanted to argue and tell him to get out. He would only cause stress and she didn't trust him.
"You couldn't stay when I needed you the last time, why should I let you stay now?"
Danny stepped forward. Year woman shouldn't be alone, but she didn't know the relationship between them or anything.
"You should have a hand to hold for this."
Suzie didn't want his hand to hold. Well, she did, but she couldn't tell him that. She didn't want him to know how much she wanted to need him.

"I deserve that," Zachary said quietly. "But I'm here now. And I have no intentions of leaving. I know you don't trust me, and there's not very much I can say that will change that right now. But I got you into this, and I won't let you go right now."
Sitting back down on the little chair, he began to roll up his sleeve. "I'm ready when you are, Dr. Thomas," he said.

Danielle looked between them both, unsure of how to proceed with this. The girl was obviously not comfortable, but it would be wise of her to have someone near to keep her relaxed.
"Okay, I'm going to take his blood first. I want you to lay back and breathe deeply for me. Please try to relax for me, all right?"

Suzie wanted Zach gone. She had serched him out and now that she knew he could take her or leave her, she wanted to leave first. She wanted him to know how it felt to be left behind, to be unwanted, to be toyed with... promised something grand and have it taken away from under you.
But there was little room for arguement here, so she lay back, looking at the ceiling as she tried to calm down and not watch what the doctor was doing to Zach. She was, in fact, already inserting the needle into his arm.
