"Of course we can, that's not a problem. And less stress on the baby. Right now she's likely too exhausted to notice even if she did wake up, but there's something safe I can give her to make sure she doesn't wake up until after it's done. I just need to get a few things and potions from my office. My skills are at your disposal, brother."

"Wait a minute, wait a minute," Zachary interrupted. "Are you sure this is safe? She's so weak from not eating, I don't want her hurt for this. Couldn't you... just let her rest a bit? Wait until she regains consciousness and has something to eat? I'm sure if you explain the situation to her and let me talk her through it, she'll be fine. She may seem fragile right now, but she's a lot stronger than she seems... she's just emotional due to the hormones, I guess. Please... Tanya, I just want her to be all right."

Thatcher frowned. "And Tanya just said it would be better actually, if we did it now, for the baby. So she's fine, like you want, and if the baby's not yours, I want her out of the house. Out of London. She can go back to her fiance and we'll all pretend like this never happened."
Thatcher had more to consider than just his brother's feelings for the girl. He had a debt that wasn't his that he would have to pay off, and a man who he knew would resort to violence looking for his brother. He had his children and his wife to consider as well, in case they got caught in the crossfires.

Zachary's jaw clicked shut. He was angry, even though he knew he had no right to be. This was his mess, and now Thatcher and Tanya had to help him clean it up. He just hated the way it made him feel.
"Fine," he snapped. "Well, since you don't seem to need me anymore, I would like to go up and sit with her whilst you prepare to stick a needle in her womb." He stood up and strode to the door. "And don't worry, I'm not running. I'm done with that."

Thatcher watched Zach go in silence.
"He has no right to be angry. And the way I see it... that girl means nothing to us unless she's carrying his child." He nodded to his sister. "Let's do it. It needs to be done, and she can't fight us on it now."

"Of course, brother. I'll make it as quick as possible. Try to make sure she stays asleep, don't let Zach wake her up. It really is less stress on the baby if she's not awake and much less painful for her as well." She really didn't care about that last part, but it was still true. "I'll be back shortly, Thatcher. We'll find out one way or another." She didn't really wait at that point and instead turned to head out the front door and with a hissing crack she was gone.

Zachary went back upstairs to Thane's room, where he had taken Susie. As he went, he thought miserably about his situation. Either he would have to lose her again, or he would have to allow Thatcher to bail him out of this mess, so that he could marry Susie. The only part of the whole mess he didn't mind, strangely, was the prospect of marrying her. He couldn't deny it; he loved her. Being without her in the weeks since he'd left had been sheer hell.
Entering the room quietly, he barely even glanced at Justin, who was still sitting with her. He walked over and pulled a chair next to the bed, then sat down and took one of her hands in his. "You can go now, Justin," he said coldly, not looking at his nephew.
He kept his eyes rooted on her face, and noticed that her eyes were beginning to flutter. "Susie? I'm here, it's OK."

Thatcher nodded to her. He didn;t care much for her discomfort either.... he still saw her as the root of their problems, even though that title lay entirely with Zach, in reality. But Zach cared about her. He said he did, anyway. All evidence pointed to the contrary.
He climbed the stairs after Tanya left, ready to tell Zach to keep the girl asleep, but he was too late. She was blinking and coming to. "Damn it," he hissed.

It was the change in the air, the subtle movement of her hand being taken in his, and mostly his voice that pulled her from her slumber.
Waking up was always a beautiful moment. Nothing in the world existed... you had no past, nothing to remember or regret for a few seconds while the brain processed. It was in these few seconds that she saw Zachary in front of her, and she smiled. "You're here."

Zachary smiled as he looked down into her eyes. They were honestly the most beautiful sight he'd ever seen. "Of course I'm here," he said softly. "Where else would I be?" He put his hand on her forehead, smoothing away a few stray hairs as he checked for a temperature. "How are you feeling? Are you hungry? We can send the house elf to make whatever you want."

Justin saw his father and uncle come into the room, the girl had stirred in her sleep but had been otherwise quiet and peaceful. He could see why Zach would fall in love with her. She was really pretty, at least when she slept and he still felt oddly protective of her child and by association her. Of course none of that really mattered he really wasn't getting himself further involved. His uncle was the one who'd gotten the girl pregnant and it was better that his father and aunt had their attention on Zachary rather than himself. Maybe they'd give him a break about finding a girl if Zach managed to get himself married instead.
Zachary dismissed him, but he didn't have anywhere else to go and stayed. He'd go if Tanya or his father made him. But otherwise he was just there in case anyone needed something... or to watch, whatever.

Susie sighed, and turned her head to the side, catching a glimpse of Justin near her, and she felt oddly better about him being there as the memories rushed back to her. Then, past him in the doorway was the other man who had started yelling. Any appetite she had had was gone, and she brought her attention back to Zachary.
"I'm not hungry. What happened? No... don't. I can guess." She really just wanted to know what was going on right now, where the woman was, and why they were all staring at her.

"You fainted," Zachary said gently. "I carried you upstairs. You've been out for about an hour." He squeezed her hand. "Please, love, won't you eat something? Tanya says you're undernourished, and you need to keep up your strength for the baby's sake."
Glancing at Thatcher, he added, "I realize I didn't even make a proper introduction. Susie, this is my brother Thatcher. This is his home."

Thatcher wasn't quite prepared for the introduction, and he stood a little straighter. Should he tell her she was welcome here? She wasn't... not until they found out whose child she carried. And he certainly wasn't glad to meet her. So instead, he said nothing and turned his attention back to his brother.
"Zachary... Tanya will be back soon, and she should be asleep."

Zachary ignored him. He was not going to force her to sleep, not when he was so glad to see her eyes open. Tanya could wait until later, for all he cared. It was more important to him that Susie was still so weak from not eating. "We can get you whatever you want from the kitchens, you only need to ask. Please... I just want to be sure you're OK."

Susie kept her eyes on Thatcher for a while, and she couldn't help but feel like a prisoner here all of a sudden.
Then there was Zachary... if the child did end up being his, she didn't want that to be the only reason he kept her around. Why did babies have to make things so complicated?
"I could still really use that water," she whispered, looking away from Thatcher.

Zachary nodded quickly and looked over at his nephew, still lingering close by. "Justin, do you mind getting her another glass of water?" He glanced over at Thatcher, his eyes still angry. "Would you mind leaving us for a bit? I'll get her relaxed after she's had some water. But I have some things I want to tell her, and I'd rather do it in private."

"I don't know Zachary," Thatcher said, crossing his arms and leaning in the doorway. "The things you do with her in private get you in a lot of trouble, don't they?"
The girl blushed, and he turned his attention to her. He was pretty certain she wasn't the first girl Zachary had ever had a pregnancy scare with, so why the hell she thought she was special enough to follow him back to London was beyond him.

"Damn it, Thatcher," Zachary said harshly. He could feel his self control beginning to slip. "I've made mistakes, I admit that. I've made a bloody lot of them, actually. But for pity's sake, just give us a moment. I'm actually trying, for once in my life, to do the right thing here."

Suzette released a breath when Thatcher nodded and left, finally, and she turned to Zach, not letting him speak right away.
"I want to go somewhere away from all of this," she said, struggling a little to sit up. "I didn't mean for all of them to get involved and I just wanted to talk to you." It was getting out of control now.
