"Do you?" He asked, still debating in his mind whether or not to mention Voldemort to her.
"Why don't you enlighten me, Ms. Weaver. What do you and Ms. Black have in common?" He wanted some hint other than the murder of that girl that she had some evil in her. Bellatrix obviously saw something if she'd taken her out to drink...
He would like to be able to bring her in on this, to have someone else in the department like him. She was riding the edge of being turned in and being promoted.

Arachne debated how to answer, but he either had the poker face of an angel or a devil. Either way, she had nothing else to loose at this point. And so she tossed the coin... if the wrong face showed there would be fireworks in this room because she would not be turned in willingly to Azkaban.
"We have the same views on what the pureness of the wizarding world should be. We both will stop at nothing to seek our goals, by any means necessary." She looked at him with a speculative gaze, she was remembering the thought she'd seen in Bella's mind. Of Bella kissing the Dark Lord. The emotions in the girl had been so strong it had been very clear and vivid of a memory. And she looked at Augustus the thought of kissing him flashed in her own mind but she quickly dismissed it. "And apparently we have an affinity for the same types of magic, and means to meet those ends."

"And did she discuss the possibility of you becoming a Death Eater?"
He finally laid it out there for her as bluntly as possible. He could kill her if things turned south, but based on what he had seen and what he had heard today, he didn't see it turning south.
He waited, his face pefectly neutral, for her answer.

Arachne didn't even blink at his question, though inside she would have been standing there with her jaw open. She was still having trouble figuring this man out. The fact that he could block her from his mind irked her to no end, though it was still strangely alluring and a challenge. But at this moment, she knew she was treading waters even more dangerous than before if she answered him incorrectly. Which meant he was either with or against the Death Eaters. The fact that he knew Bellatrix was a death eater though is what convinced her to continue answering truthfully more than any other threat he could have made.
"The possibility was discussed," she spoke slowly and guardedly.

She had gotten very tight lipped all of a sudden. What was she thinking? Was she in favor of the idea, or against it? Still, if Bella had mentioned it, then it meant she trusted Arachne enough to bring it up.
"Very good. And the verdict you came to?" He asked. "Was a time set up for you?" He was assuming she had been for the idea, and now wanted to know if Bella was indeed going to take her to the Dark Lord, or if he would have to.

Arachne relaxed with his words, but only because of his second question. Her suspicions were laid to rest at that moment and her entire demeanor changed. Her eyes softened knowingly, and she actually managed to smile with an almost cat-like grace.
"I was interested, though no time was setup only that she might try to gain favor by recruiting me. Although... she doesn't know much of what I am as you now do. She was easy to read, Augustus, and she fears those who might have advantages she does not in the Dark Lord's eyes. She kissed him you know, I saw her memory of it."
She didn't quite know why she was sharing it, but after all it was her assignment from him to watch and report on Bellatrix. And perhaps it was her strange sense of loyalty to Augustus that she shared the information in a show of some trust. And she had unconsciously called him by his first name rather than his title, though she realized it after the fact. She hoped he wouldn't take it as disrespect for his position.

That was more than he had ever gotten out of her, he realized, and he sat back to take it all in.
"She kissed him..." he repeated. "Did her memory show his reaction?" That was what he was most interested in. He also knew a Lestrange that would be interested in this as well... he stored it in his mind for use at a later date.
"I will let her take you, then... However, I imagine, if what you just told me is true, that she already has quite a bit of favor with him. You will not tell anyone. The knowledge you have is dangerous, Ms. Weaver. But thank you for telling me."

Arachne nodded, she had no intention of sharing that knowledge with any one else. She also knew that her occlumency would be the only thing to save her from anyone finding out that she had that knoweldge, especially from the Dark Lord.
Then she recounted what she had seen from Bella's memory of the kiss which the girl had felt so passionate about that it was a very clear memory from Bella's perspective. "I assure you it goes no further than this room. She craved his touch and kissed him. And his response was to pull her onto his lap with his arms around her waist and the memory of the kiss was very intense and passionate. From her perspective at least he seemed wanting of her even though he seemd to pull away with effort, and then he called her his 'most loyal'. Those parts of the memory were very clear, as she had very strong feelings about the memory."
She looked at him, wishing she could read him. Remembering Bella's feelings for the kiss had turned her own thoughts to Augustus, wondering what his lips would taste like. She would likely never find out, but it didn't change the fact that she wanted to. The man was handsome, and hid his dark heart well behind a smile and she found herself drawn to that hidden darkness. Perhaps it was the fact she'd shared more with him than she'd shared with anyone, let him know her vulnerable strengths, or maybe it was the fact that he was one of the few men who was a true enigma to her, one that was apparently just as dark and outwardly deceptive as she. But regardless of the reason she felt drawn to him, despite herself. And she didn't bother to hide the curious heat in her eyes as her gaze fell to his lips.

Augustus did not miss her gaze, though his thoughts were on something more. Bellatrix... obviously had an advantage as a death eater. Were he a jealous man, he would be angry. But he was only curious how far Bella's little affair with the devil himself would go, and what would happen to her when it ended.
"Arachne," he said gently, aiming to draw her attention back to his eyes. "Thank you for sharing this with me."
It was knowledge that he, like Arachne, would have to keep to himself for a while.
"You've done well."

Arachne smiled and looked back to his eyes, remembering just where she was and mentally shook herself. Fool girl, he's your boss, she told herself. Then she decided that while he was here she might as well give her current work report to him, if for no other reason than to remind herself who he was, her boss.
"Theres one more thing that I should report to you since you're here, for my assignment, I mean. Bellatrix also has an interest in a few students but I'm not sure why yet. I told her I would watch them for her. If they are an interest to her I suspected it might be of interest to you as well. Two names specifically she gave me were Rori something and Sirius Black along with his little group of friends."
"Also, I do have some suspiciouns about the champions you also asked me to watch. What I can't figure out is why. Why are there three Fifth Years selected and one Seventh Year. It seems an unfair advantage that Alice Prewett has on the other contestants. And the Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff girls don't seem much of a match either. The Slytherin is a transfer from France, but i suspect is the only true competition for the Gryffindor girl. I keep wondering if the Goblet of Fire was ... rigged. And if so.. by who and why? Bellatrix also found this interesting and seems curious about it."

Augustus nodded. "Yes... that makes sense she would be watching her cousin. And I think you're both pulling at strings thinking that goblet was tampered with. There is no tampering with that thing. The choices, granted, are curious. And have you formed an opinion of our French transfer?"
He was curious about her, and about Ms. Prewett, if they were the only two that really posed any kind of a challange in the tournament.

"Samantha Montgomery. I have not met her yet other than from what I've observed in class. She is not very talented with potions, but I have not gotten close enough yet to find anything useful. On the surface she is a girl who seems like any other socialite slytherin who cares what people think of her. However from what I have felt so far from her she has emotional memories not far from the surface but she is the next on my list to find out about. She seems to have an inner potential that she does not show and insecurities, and I am interested to find out more and why." It was all she'd been able to gather thus far from being near her in class but she hadn't had the time to concentrate as she'd like on the girl. But that would change.

Augustus nodded. "All right," he said quietly. "As ever, Ms. Weaver... none of this leaves this room. Even to Bellatrix."
He stood and regarded her, and then it came, one of those rare but true compliments that didn't always sound nice... but he meant them.
"I am pleasantly surprised by you Ms. Weaver. Continue to impress me."

Arachne nodded without hesitation, it seemed a moot point she really hadn't even wanted to originally tell him even a portion of what she had, nor did she want any of it leaving the room. As for the rest, she had no reason for it to leave the room. Though she did make the concession not to tell Bella. The less Bella knew about her working for Augustus or anything else related.. the better. It was a matter of self preservation as much as loyalty to her boss who had as of tonight gained her respect as such.
"I wouldn't dare speak of this to any other than you. Though I assume you would do the same about the things you learned of me as well?" She didn't want others to know, she barely wanted him to know but she'd really had no choice in the end.
It was his compliment that surprised her though, the first he'd ever given her and though it showed how little he'd thought of her before... she appreciated it for the compliment it obviously was. "I would aim to do nothing less, Augustus."

Augustus shook his head at her question. "No. For both of our sakes, it's best your own secrets do not leave this room. I would only caution you to be more careful in the future." They couldn't risk more students finding her, or finding out about her, and more deaths. Eventually, someone would become suspicious.
"Mr. Rookwood, if you would," he added, finally correcting her on his name. "At least within the walls of the school. I will leave you to your rest," he bowed his head at her slightly, backing towards the door. He would trust Bellatrix to take her to Voldemort... if she wanted the favor, she could have it. Augustus had no similar need to prove himself.

"I intend to, Mr. Rookwood. I assure you, I don't usually make those kinds of mistakes." She stood up and glided to the door to open it for him, "Sleep well, for what's left of the night anyways." She opened the door and waited for him to leave, her face serene and back to it's normal calm collected and unreadable state.

"You as well, Ms. Weaver," Augustus said, nodding his head slightly to her as he walked towards the door. He sincerely hoped she did continue to impress him.
He glanced both ways down the hallway before stepping out, hoping no one turned the corner.

Minerva turned the corner of the staff rooms, having done her final check of the castle before returning to her own rooms when she saw one of the tournament judges, Augustus Rookwood emerging from the rooms of a student teacher, Arachne Weaver. It was late at night already, too late for normal visits of proper respect to a lady's private rooms. She wasn't sure if she should be suspicous or if the pair were having an affair. Both were equal thoughts in her mind at that moment. With the death of a student looming over the school anything could be suspicious, but she also knew it could easily be the latter of the two.
She raised an eyebrow as she looked at the man. "Mr. Rookwood" Under her robes she held her wand.. just in case.

Augustus was inflappable. He had the world's most practised poker face, and now was no different.
He saw McGonagall and nodded his head once, politely, and then smiled a little cheekily, as if he knew he'd been caught.
"Professor. Beautiful night."

As soon as Arachne heard the Professor's voice she reacted in order to protect herself and him from suspicion. She didn't care about anything as trivial as a reputation, as long as it was necessary. She saw McGonagall's mind flash to the death of the girl and that was all she needed to react.
Arachne came into view and snaked her hand through his arm to pull him for a goodnight kiss. She was sure she'd pay for it later, but it was better than the Deputy Headmistress suspecting her in the death of the girl. It wasn't a long kiss, but it at least looked like a lover's kiss goodnight. The fact that it felt like one had nothing to do with it, but she gave him the look in her eyes that said she had to protect them both and hoped he would understand.
She purposely ignored the Professor and quickly said, "Goodnight Augustus," she even manged to flush as she gave a quick look to McGonagall before closing the door to her rooms. Then she whispered against the door as she leaned on it listening to the voices on the other side, "goodnight Mr. Rookwood." Her fingers lingered on her lips. No wonder Fiona has a crush on the man, she thought to herself.
