Karen laughed at Ted's comment. If she didn't know better, she might have wondered if she, too, possessed some sort of magical skill that told her he was coming for a visit. She got up to cut the pie, just as Edward walked in the door.
"Oh, Edward!" she said. "Just in time for some apple pie. Yes, it's before dinner, but seeing as our boy is here, I think it's a special occasion."
She glanced at Ted, wondering just how much of his story he was willing to repeat to his father.

"Hey Dad," Ted said, turning when his father came in. He had already poured himself a glass of soda pop, something he didn't often get when he was at the Ministry. It was something he wanted to introduce Andi to, but he wondered if he would ever get the chance.
"Good to see you... how has everything been?" He gave his mother a brief glance, silently asking her not to say anything.

Edward smiled at his wife and kissed her cheek. "Hm. You like to spoil us," he said with a laugh before turning back to Ted. "Everything has been going great. Been slightly busy, but that's alright." He studied his son for a moment. "What? Do you think you are too old not to give your father a hug," he asked with his arms open wide.

Ted smiled and almost laughed, moving to give his father a hug. It had been a while since he had seen them... since last Christmas, maybe. He wasn't sure.
"Missed you," he said. "Thought it was high time I came home for a visit."
He looked back at his mother. "Can I get plates down for that pie or help you somehow? In case you haven't noticed, I'm starving."

Karen laughed, but she continued to watch her son carefully. It was nice to see him smiling and laughing so soon after he had been crying in her arms, but she still worried for him. "Yes, of course, you can get out the plates. They're in the same place they've always been," she said with a wink.
She smiled over at her husband as she returned to slicing the pie. "Oh, it's so nice to have both of my boys here together. Teddy, you really must come home and visit us more often."

"I know, Mum," Ted said, frowning once his back was turned while he was getting the plates. All the smiling was just an act... it was some sort of macho thing in his mind, but he didn't want to tell his dad about Andi just yet.
"It's just been so busy, lately." Well, up until the last couple of weeks, anyway.

"It's understand to be busy, after all you're working," said Edward. He leaned against the counter while he watched his wife and son in the kitchen. A smile was faintly on his lips. It was nice to have Ted home.
"Speaking of working, how is your job going?"

Ted shrugged. "It's been all right," he said carefully, unsure how willing he was to lie to his father, especially when his mother was right there. "I've been doing field work, mostly, so I haven't been in the office much."
Well that was true, anyway. "And don't ask for details on the job... it's a little gruesome."

"Although, I suppose your job is far more interesting then having to go rewire a house," Edward said with a nod and a smile. He was going to respect his son's wishes and not ask for details, although he was fasicanated with what exactly Ted did.
"Son, would you be so kind and hand me three glasses? What would you two like to drink?"

Karen moved over and took the plates from Ted, then expertly doled out the first slice of pie, a perfect piece. "Teddy, since you're our guest of honor, you get the first piece," she said. She added a dollop of ice cream on top and handed the first plate to Ted. Smiling softly, she turned and went about serving up two more pieces for herself and her husband.

Ted nodded, turning to the cabinet directly behind him to pull out two glasses. "I already have something to drink, Dad, thanks," he said, handing the glasses to his father, who was closer to the refridgerator.
He kissed his mother's cheek, taking the pie from her, but waited until she and his father had some too before he took a bite.

Karen turned to her husband. "I'll have some milk, if you don't mind, dear," she said. She scooped ice cream on top of the two remaining slices of pie and brought them over to the table, setting one in front of Edward's traditional spot, and one in front of hers. "I hope all went well with the Fitz-Hugh house today," she added to her husband. "I know you were really having trouble with the old wiring in that house."
As she spoke, she glanced over at Ted with a smile. She wanted him to know that she wasn't going to bring up the reason for Ted's visit unless he wanted to.

He poured his and well as Karen's glasses and carried them over to the table. Edward sat them down where they usually sat before taking his seat. "Everything went alright. I still have a little bit of work to do. I have to rewire their heating system, and I'm finished. The rest of the wiring was not extremely difficult, but putting in a brand new heating system, that will be a job. The house was not even built to really have a heating system, but I guess that's what happens when you try to remodel an old home."

Ted smiled, listening to all of this. This was simply, incomplicated, home. It was what he needed to just get away. "I imagine business is picking up. It's starting to get cold, and that was always when you were busiest," he added to the conversation. He just wanted to listen to them talk for a while.

"Yes, business is starting to pick up," said Edward agreeing with his son. "I think that as long as I don't have to rewire more than four houses this coming winter, I believe that I'll be alright. I really dislike it when work starts getting backed up. Just working on fixing a wire or two is one thing, but working on an entire house."
He gave a shake of his head before taking a drink from his glass. "I think the Johnsons down the street are having trouble with their heat working, so that will probably be my next project. Plus, Mrs. Reed's dryer is out and I need to fix that tomorrow since I have the day off. I promised her that I would."
Edward took a bite of his pie. "This is wonderful Karen," he said smiling at his wife.

"I can help," Ted said, offering his services quite willingly. "I mean, any of your jobs in the next day or two, I can help you."
He could make his father's work a little easier, too, as long as none of the people who owned the houses were around. He didn't know how long he was going to be in town, but he may as well be ueful while he was.
"And dad's right... this pie is amazing."

Karen smiled warmly. "Thank you," she said. She hadn't done anything different to the recipe or anything; it was the same as she always made. Admittedly, she hadn't been baking as much as she used to these days, simply because Ted wasn't around all the time, and the pie was too much temptation for just her and Edward when they were alone.
"Does that mean you're planning to stay for a few days?" she asked Ted hopefully. "You didn't bring a bag or anything, but I still have some of your things upstairs. You know we'd love to have you here... but you're sure there's not something you need to do?"
She gave him a meaningful look. As much as she loved having him home, she didn't want him hiding away from his problems, or the girl that he loved. He needed to talk to her, and see if he could repair the damage. She'd never push him, but she wanted to see her son happy again. He was making a good effort right now, but Karen could always tell the difference.

Ted gave his mother a look that clearly said to drop it. He loved her and he knew she was just trying to make him see what was best for him, but he still wasn't sure he wanted to say anything to his father.
"I'll be in town for a couple of days, okay?" He said. "I can take that off of work just fine. No one will miss me." That much was true.

Edward caught something was going on between Ted and Karen, however being polite, Edward didn't question it. If Ted wanted him to know something, then he would tell him whenever he was ready. He wasn't going to push him into telling him anything he didn't want to.
"You're mother kept your room just the way it was," Edward said trying to ease whatever was going on. "And I'll be glad to have your help. I might go in and work half a day tomorrow since you're willing to help." Edward gave a smile in Ted's direction. "All I have to do is call the Romans and tell them that I'll be there tomorrow to work on their house. They're supposed to be going out of town in the morning, so I'm sure that they won't mind."

"Well, then give them a call and you and I can have the place done in no time," Ted said, smiling gently towards his father, the epitome of the blue collar man. He loved both of them dearly, and was once again reminded of how he missed the simple, muggle life.
"Can I get another piece, Mum?"
