"A hospital ward?" She repeated, everything else sort of slipping her mind at that point. "How would a hospital ward make me happy? Do I come off as happy when people are suffering?" She was teasing him about it, and she put her hand on his arm.
"This room makes me happy. I'm still not sure how you did it, but well done, you."

He smiled like a boy getting praised, it was stupid he knew, but he was glad she was happy. "What is your favorite thing in this room?" He looked around at all the furniture, photos, art, decorations... and wondered what things were special to her.

It was horrible how that smile of his was so contagious, and she couldn't help but grin back at him. He was the sole person who could do that to her.
"My favorite thing in this room?" She asked, wondering that herself, and she looked around, considering everything there was. Her grandfaher was a bit of a pack rat, so there were many things to consider.
Finally, she stood up and walked across the room, pulling a picture off the wall and brought it back to Nate. It was of an older man and a small baby with bright red hair.
"That's my grandpa," she said. "And that's me. I just like the look on his face." What she didn't say was that it was the first time anyone looked at her with that much love in their eyes.

Nate considered her and took the picture from her hand looking at it. He saw the look on the man's face and then was intrigued by the red haired baby in his lap. He wondered if she had the same fiery temper then as she did now. And her eyes were large and trusting, an expression he knew he had never seen on her as long as he'd known her. That image of her eyes burned a hole into his chest. "You must love him very much, and I can't blame him for loving you either. He looks like a good man who cared. You're very lucky you know... some people never find that kind of love in an entire lifetime." and few find unconditional love twice

Rayne's smile was still present, but it softened. Yes... few people find that, but every child should have it from their parents.
"I've seen baby pictures of my mum," she said, "And we're identical. I wonder if he held her like he used to hold me. I..." she bit her lip, not wanting to continue, but she could trust this to him.
"I think the only way I catch glimpses of what she must have been like when I look at him."

"I'm sure your mother would be proud of you. If she was anything like you or your grandfather, I'm sure she would happy to see you now. My Gran always says that to me, 'You remind me of your mother, she'd be proud of you'. I like to think that's true anyways, and I'd bet it is true for you as well." He had an open honest look on his face, one that showed he understood and didn't judge her for it.

Rayne sighed. She wasn't worried about her mum being proud of her... she just wished she had known the woman.
She looked at the photo in Nate's hands, and her smile came back for a moment. She hadn't been in anyone's arms since she was four... even alienating her grandfather to at least that extent, and looking at this photo sort of made her miss it.
"You're parents would have every reason to be proud of you, Nate."

"You know, I never knew my parents either. They died when I was too young to remember them at all. I know they loved be, but I never knew them. And I only have one picture of them that I keep in my room. All I know is the little bit my Gran has told me. I know I look like my mum though, I didn't inherit my da's red hair." He actually knew very little about his parents, his Gran had always loved him but talking about her dead son usually ended up upsetting her and he never really got her to talk much. She always told him to just know that they loved him and not to dwell too much in the past but to be in the present and hope for the future.

"Which grandmother do you live with?" She asked, curious now that he was opening up. Unlike her, he did no keep things secret. She had just never asked. "I mean, your father's or your mother's?"
It was coincidental that they had similar childhoods, she realized, both tragic, but different enough. Maybe Nate could understand....
Or maybe he'd just leave when he decided he was bored, or uninterested, or whatever the reason was.

"She's my da's mum, I never met any of my other grandparents. Both of my parents were half-bloods. My Gran's a witch though.. she's got red hair like yours. You know my Gran is the best person I've ever known. Heh.. she even has a temper like you too." He winked but his smile was genuine. He didn't mind sharing his past, he'd come to terms with it a long time ago.

"I do not have a temper," she said, defending herself by giving him a dangerous look. "And your grandmother would probably flay you for saying she did, too."
She sighed and leaned back, taking the picture from him and turning it upside down in her lap.
"Where would the room take you?" She asked, her eyes unfocused as her mind wandered. "A room at your Grandmother's? Or somewhere else?"

"I suspect the door would have taken me here anyways, Rayne" because i'm happy when I'm with you and seeing you happy makes me happy.. my happy thought is you. but he couldn't say that to her. He blushed but he didn't explain and didn't look as if he was going to either.

Rayne's brows furrowed again. "I don't understand why." It was the second time she had said that to him where this room was concerned. "Why would it have been the same room?"
He was intruging her now, confusing her, dangerously close to pushing buttons, but he had danced on the safe side of that line for a while.

He looked at her, trying to decide if he would end up getting himself slapped for answering her truthfully. He hadn't intended to tell her why, but he didn't want to lie to her either. He looked at her, into her eyes and just blushed. "Because what makes me happiest is seeing you smile, Rayne." He spoke it so softly that he wasn't even sure she would hear the words.

She should have smiled at those words, but Rayne did not. She frowned slightly. That was an admission that she wasn't sure she could handle. She almost wished he hadn't said it at all, but her own stupid mouth wouldn't stay closed.
"Why, Nate?"

"Is it that hard to believe someone cares if you're happy and that you stay happy, Rayne?" He was still very calm, his voice soft and gentle. "I wouldn't have told you, but you asked. And I'm not going to lie to you or pretend I am anything other than what I am." His face looked into the fireplace then, his face looked almost sad or hurt that he'd had to admit that much when he knew she would likely push him away for it. But he knew he had to be honest with her. He could never lie to Rayne.

Rayne took a deep breath and held it for a moment.
They had just crossed the line where she would respond positively. Maybe neither of them knew it, but Nate had gotten more out of her in one sitting than anyone else ever had, and that included her best friend.
She stood of from the couch. "I have to go."

Nate frowned but he didn't stop her... couldn't stop her. What would he say? sorry? No, because he wasn't sorry for telling her the truth, he was patient, he was calm, and he would be there regardless if she go upset with him or not. "Rayne, I'm not sorry and I'm not going anywhere. But if you need to leave, you'll know where to find me waiting for you."

Rayne paused in the doorway, her back to him, as he said this, and she felt like a deer in the headlights despite the fact that Nate was very calm, and in no way threatening to her. She still felt threatened.
"Thank you for the room," she said, not turning around, and she hesitated for a second before she opened the door, and she was gone.

Nate knew that anything he said at this point would only make matters worse so he didn't chase after her. Instead he stayed right where he was and slept on the sofa, somewhere that she could find him in if she came back or worst case, he could at least sleep where he knew made her happy, and therefore it was his happy place too. He sighed though missing her already, he'd screwed up and he knew it. Somehow he'd done the same stupid things he was afraid he'd do and tell her too much, be too honest and drive her away. He was an idiot but he knew there was nothing he could do about it right then without her getting mad.
