"That's not true," Rayne said, a touch on the defensive. "I believe in a good romance now and again." She didn't realize how much she was lying. She didn't laugh a lot, and it took work to get her to smile, but her smiles were beautiful. But she had never put it into words in her own head that she didn't even believe in love anymore. The most she thought of love was as a series of compromises that, if you were lucky, two people could agree on.
She looked up at him and gave him a half felt, closed lip smile. "I think you're Gran's pretty smart, too," she said softly, her fingers fiddling with the hem of the sleeve of her robe. "She must be a pretty incredible woman."

Nate looked at her square in the eye, "Yeah she really is... you'd like her I think." just like you are he finished silently. "I should let you meet her sometime, I think you'd get along really well. You know you both have the same red hair hair too?" He grinned but didn't say the next thought that came to him. and a temper to go with it too But of course he wouldn't say that, he wanted to still be alive for his date to the dance.

Nate was smart not to push her on the subject of romance and all of that. Very smart, indeed. She would have only become all too defensive. But then, he probably knew that.
"It'd be nice to meet her some time," Rayne said. She took a long, deep breath. It was one of those moments that made you wonder what you were doing, or if there was a plan at all. She sighed.
"What are you doing for the holidays?" She asked. "Going home?"

He watched her considering, but his normal friendly smile was still on his face. He wondered why she was so shy about things like love or romance. What was wrong with hoping for happiness and romance? He knew she usually started to get all riled up when anyone talked about it, and even know he'd seen her start before he stopped. But he wondered silently and hoped that someday she'd trust him enough to share whatever her burden was. One day.
"Most likely, unless Gran goes on vacation somewhere. She still likes to travel sometimes." His Gran was still as fiesty and lively as ever too. "What about you? You have plans for holidays?"

"I'm going home," Rayne said. She always spent Christmas with her grandfather, and it was a tradition she wouldn't give up for the world. The man was the only man that had her trust and the only person that she ever really talked to.
It occured to her that Nate didn't even know she lived with her grandfather. She frowned. "I'm spending the holidays with my grandpa," she said, looking up at him, and she felt like she was opening up to Nate, even though there was a lot she still wasn't saying. He still wouldn't know where she lived; for all he knew, it culd just be a visit.

"Are you two close? I mean do you visit often?" He was asking softly, he wondered about her family, she never spoke of them. His parents were dead, but his Gran had raised him. He could understand the closeness of a grandparent though he had no idea that Rayne would understand this too.

Rayne nodded slowly, then said, "I live with him, actually."
It felt strange, saying it, only because she never had before. Well, no one had ever asked her before, either. "I grew up with him. He raised me."
That was all she said about it, though a moment later, she smiled. "He's a one of a kind guy, really. And I bet he was quite the ladies man in his day."

"What is your Grandfather like?" He spoke softly, and thought about his own grandmother. She was the world to him and he knew what it was like to live with a grandparent who had raised him. He wondered if Rayne felt the same way about her grandfather.

"He is..." She wondered how to perfectly describe him. He was perfect, really. Rayne had a funny look on her face, the one she gave Nate that silently said he wasn't allowed to make fun of her.
"He is infinitely patient, and kind, and sweet. He can make me smile no matter how I'm feeling. He is also the most forgiving man I know."
He had forgiven Rayne's father, his son in law, when Rayne had not been able to. What Rayne didn't know was that her grandfather would kill the man if he ever saw him again... but he wanted Rayne to be able to forgive him.
"He's a muggle, so he's endlessly fascinated by things I show him when I come home for the summer or on holidays."

"He sounds like a good man, you're lucky to have someone like that. Do you give him as much of a hard time as you do me too?" He was half teasing her again but he did wonder if there was somoene in her life she let close. He felt an odd afinity for the man he'd never met if he could make her laugh. Nate liked making her laugh too.

Rayne shrugged and said, "I don't give you such a hard time," before she even realized he was teasing her. When she did, she stopped herself from saying more, and smiled, leaning into him to nudge him. "Very funny," she said.
The truth was, Rayne was just as bad with her grandfather as she was with Nate, but the old man refused to stop breaking down her walls. He didn't give her the option to close herself off, so of course she had come to let her grandfather in. Much like Nate, he was a saint for his patience.

"You know personally I love when you get all riled up and your eyes flare.. do it again." He was still teasing her.. he couldn't hide the grin on his face.

She almost wasn't sure if she wanted to be annoyed with him or laugh that he was teasing her, and he got one of those suffered looks in the interum.
"We can go, you know. You're probably bored to tears sitting her looking at all of these owls."

Nate chuckled at her look, she was so cute trying to be annoyed by him. "I'm not bored to tears" ..and i'm not looking at the owls... he thought, "but we can go if you'd like." He stood up and held out his arm to her.

Rayne took his arm and used it to pull herself to her feet. She had mailed her letter and had a little while away from everyone. And Nate was good company, even if she rarely ever told him as much.
"Where to, Nate?" She asked. She didn't know where she wanted to go. She just felt kind of restless.

Nate thought for a moment.. hmm.. where to? Good question.. the trophy room came to mind first but was also the first thought to be pushed asside. She'd likely hog-tie him in the air if he so much as suggested being alone with her in a private area like that, especially if he tried to kiss her. Nope that wouldn't do.. he thought some more..
"How about I surprise you?" He thought of something fun but it was a little known secret he'd discovered not long ago and thought she might enjoy it. Of course it was just as likely she'd still find something to get riled up about, but he wouldn't mind so much for this...

She frowned. It was Hogwarts. Why couldn't he just tell her where he wanted to go? Godric, she hated surprises so much.
She'd oblige him, but she already knew she wasn't going to feel comfortable about it, or anything even akin to relaxed. She should work on that, she thought.
"All right," she said slowly, and then nodded to him. She liked Nate. She could trust him, right?

Nate grinned like a little boy and eagerly took her hand and began walking down to the seventh floor not saying a word. When she gave him a look he just smiled and continued on until he reached what seemed like an empty hallway. He kept thinking one thing I need a place to make Rayne smile.. I need a place to make Rayne smile...I need a place to make Rayne smile...
As he passed by one section of the hall a door seemed to appear in front of them. He grinned and looked at her face. He hadn't been sure if she knew about the room of requirement. He'd discovered it last year when he needed to find a place and had figured out the trick after the second time he'd tried to find it. He smiled as he opened the door...

Rayne had heard of the room, but she'd never been to it, and didn't know how to open it. She gave the door a look, and the Nate, but she'd committed thus far and she'd see this one through as well.
"What's inside?" She asked just as he was opening the door.

"You'll see.. it's a surprise..." he hesitated before opening the door the rest of the way, and decided to cover her eyes first. He knew she didn't like surprises but hoped the room would know what to do for him. It had always worked before now, and even he didn't know what to expect to find. He opened the door the rest of the way with his foot and walked her inside and pushed the door closed behind them. "okay open your eyes."
