[Rabastan Lestrange]

Rabastan had decided the moment Dorian came along that he was done with this little scene, and more people just kept joining.

"If I may interrupt," he said, charmingly. "Samantha, love, I must be on my way. It was a pleasure meeting you, and I hope we'll speak again soon."

He gave Dorian a look that may as well have been an eye roll, and then mock saluted the other two before heading up to the dorm rooms. She was pretty, but not worth the effort at the moment.

All the better, Dorian thought, and slipped into the seat Rabastan had just left. The difference between Rabastan and Dorian was as large as a canyon. Rabastan would give up on a chase... not that he usually had to, but he would. Dorian would not. He liked the chase, in fact.

Rabastan was also much smoother and a much better manipulator than Dorian, though not for lack of trying.

Lani was coming down the main staircase just as Rabastan was going up, and she gave him a shy smile. It shouldn't have surprised anyone that she had once been with Rabastan. There was hardy a girl in Slytherin who hadn't.

"Oh wow," she commented, seeing the small gathering, and then the center of it, a small strike of jealousy flaired for a brief moment. "Well, you're fitting in quite well, aren't you Samantha?"

Rita stood up as Rabastan excused himself. "Actually I just remembered something.. I'm sorry but I too must leave. Perhaps we can talk later, Samantha. I would love to catch up with you but I'm afraid I need to ..check something."

Rita didn't wait for an answer and quickly towards the girls dorms almost bumping into Leilani as she spoke. Rita just dodged around her and dissappeared the way the other girl had come.

She almost would have preferred if Rabastan stayed and Dorian had left, she couldn't explain that at all, only while one she wasn't afraid of though she really should have been, the other...she couldn't help but notice something strange. For whatever reason she wasn't at ease around Dorian, though she appeared just fine.

Giving Rabastan a parting smile she watched him leave, and then Rita leaving. She looked at Dorian as if to ask if he was going to leave but a voice caught her.

"Oh wow," she commented, seeing the small gathering, and then the center of it, a small strike of jealousy flaired for a brief moment. "Well, you're fitting in quite well, aren't you Samantha?"

She heard the jealousy in the girl's voice and slowly lifted her chin to see who it was, "Leilani, please join us." she said plesantly, though her eyes challenged the girl, she looked back to Dorian, and smiled, "My party has gotten smaller but I'm fortunate in acquaintances so it would seem."

"If you're going to challange me," Lani said, sitting down and raising a delicate eyebrow. "Come out and say it. I'm not much for reading intonations and the way someone curves their fan over conversation."

It was rather blunt, but Lani wasn't into the games, and she wasn't going to play them with Sam. She didn't care if she made an enemy of the girl... they both had enough other friends that it wouldn't kill them.

"I believe you're the one who issued a challenge." Sam said there was heat in her eyes for a moment before the fire was banked, " I issued an invitation, " she shrugged, she doubted the girl would provide much a challenge at all, and even so she didn't care enough to find out.

Why every woman felt they had to prove themselves by taking her down, Sam didn't know, but she didn't care, she wouldn't let someone else's petty jealousies into her life unless she was looking for some minor annoyance to squash out of fun. Sam smiled prettily at the blonde, " though a challenge to what, I can't imagine." did the girl think that she would duel with her? Fencing? Surely she didn't mean to match popularity, good Lord how droll.

[Dorian Knight]

Dorian watched the two girls, almost hoping for a catfight. Lani usually had ways of starting fights, but she seemed unmotivated to do it today.

Samantha intrigued him. She had been the one with the challanging look in her eyes when Lani came into the picture, and now she was acting the victim when the blonde called her out on it? Maybe she was decidedly catty, too. Dorian didn't mind.

"You're divine womanhood or your territory or whatever that look was for," Lani replied, not backing down. She wasn't in the mood to fight or anything of the sort. She had come down and joined the group. For a second, perhaps, she may have been jealous, but she let it go.

She didn't know Samantha. She didn't care to now, but she wasn't going to hate a girl she didn't know. She was just being up front about not wanting to play the stupid games.

Sam had lowered her eyes to her lap and sighed, "You are quite wrong Miss Evetts, I don't wish to "challenge" you at womanhood," she looked at Dorian, " Or territory." Returning the look she gave the girl an apathetic expression. She hadn't been the one to enter the room jealous. She wasn't the one who *wanted* to be the center of attention, she simply had attracted others around her. Leilani had drawn first blood with the belittling comment on Sam's "popularity" spoken out of jealousy. Sam's challenging look had been to advise against starting a fight, especially over something Sam had no interest in. If Lani wanted to have every man in Slytherin, more power to her. Sam was quite different, she wanted a ring, and yet she knew she would never marry without love, and of course she didn't believe in love. But if she was wrong and Love was out there somewhere waiting to prove her wrong, she would marry him and she would be happy, but of course she didn't believe in happy endings either.

Rystain sat back drawing his gaze from the fire to the two girls who were having a minor tiff over what seemed to be Ryan at least from where he sat having only heard bits and peices of the conversation. He wondered idly if he should just sit back and watch like Ryan was obviously doing but he wasn't in the mood to hear two girls bickering over the guy. Not tonight, he had things on his mind and they were interrupting his silent enjoyment of the fireplace.

"Hey Lani" Rystain broke in casually, damn why did he have to get himself involved.. he really just wanted his solitude but if breaking in was going to keep the girls from drawing wands tonight then so be it. Besides Lani was another slytherin beauty and he wouldn't mind getting to know her better. "if you aren't to busy with Sam you could always join me, I promise not to bite unless you ask." He'd meant it as a half-joke though the snake refrence was also half-true, he wouldn't chase her like most guys but he wouldn't say no either.

Oh sure, leave her with Dorian. The boy set her nerves tingling and she didn't like it, she wasn't too sure she liked him either. Now Rabastan had been smooth as butter, he was charming and sincere, or at least knew how to look sincere, Dorian tried too hard, and yet why had her breath held when he kissed her hand she didn't know. All she did know was she felt safer in the hands of the Devil than with Dorian Knight.

Dorian was going to cut in anyway. He knew Lani well enough, and she could get really angry when she wanted to. Honestly, he didn't know what was wrong with Sam... Lani hadn't said anything to her. He had seen the challenging look in Sam's eyes...

Luckily, Rystain saved him, and he half shrugged at Sam.

Lani felt like she was being ganged up on. She wasn't the one who started this stupid argument, and Merlin knew it was not over Ryan. It was about all of Slytherin, and how Sam seemed to make a snap judgement on her after one sentence.

She turned her pretty eyes on Rystain, giving him a half angry look. She didn't need him to keep her from fights, and she almost felt like he was patronizing her for it.

She didn't want to stay near Sam, though, and Rystain was the only other alternative if she was going to stay in the common room. Even then...

"I'd rather not stay here," she told him, though her eyes suggested that he was welcome wherever else she went.

Sam didn't react well to jealousy especially unwarrented jealousy and she knew what came from girls who were afraid Sam was encroaching on their territory, it was best just to nip it in the bud early on. Specifically here with a glance that said she wasn't in the mood to fight over a guy, not now that she didn't have to, and she had seen jealousy in Lani's eyes as she came down, heard it in the girl's unwelcoming welcome. She wasn't about to put up with it.

When Lani left Sam thought about pleading a headache and leaving all together, nothing like a killjoy to sap the energy.

Rystain saw the invitation in Lani's eyes. He wasn't doing anything else and might as well join her if she was offering. Besides he'd always thought she was beautiful and he wasn't going to let pass an opportunity if it presented itself. And opportunity had just knocked in her eyes.

Rystain quirked eyebrow with lazy elegance and a preditor's smile touched his lips. He stood up gracefully for a man, unfolding his long muscular legs and standing taller than average his chest broad but not overly bulky. He was on the Slytherin Quidditch team and had managed to earn his toned body through physical activity. He offered his hand to Lani, "I think I'll join you, Lani.. I need a walk anyways before bed." He usually took a walk around the castle before it was lights out time in the school. It helped him relax.

Lani watched him get up with mild appreciation. Hey, she was allowed to look. She wasn't exactly the slut Lyra was (the girl would spread her legs for any man) but she wasn't clean cut and naive, either.

Her eyes trailed up his body as it unfolded and he stood, and she waited for him, glancing back at Ryan. Let him deal with the new princess. He deserved the hassle anyway.

When Rystain came near, she turned to leave the common room. Just getting out of the dungeons would be wonderful.

Rystain slowly followed Lani out of the common rooms without looking back. He was in no hurry and wasn't going to trail after the girl like a puppy either. Besides he could watch her backside as she walked in front of him and he wasn't afraid to watch as her hips swayed while she walked ahead of him until they were out of the door, Rystain closing it softly behind him. "Where would you like to go, Lani?" Ladies choice, he didn't really mind where the went.

She was waiting for him while he closed the door. She didn't expect him to follow her like a puppy, either, and thank goodness, or she would have been sorely disappointed.

Where did she want to go? The furthest place from the little tramp in the common room now. "I'd honestly probably just walk to the Astronomy tower," she said. "You're welcome to join me."

He already said that he would, but she at least gave him a verbal invitation this time.

Sam sighed and laughed at the same time, "I'm making more and more friends as I go along aren't I?" she asked shaking her head, " Perhaps I should apologize." though she didn't see what she did was wrong, and while her apology would have the best acting beatings could buy she still wouldn't have felt sorry for defending herself against potential cattyness.
