Sam's stomach twisted violently, but then it passed. Should she raise her hand? She knew quite a few, not many that she should mention, let's see...there was the blasting curse, Confringo, it pretty much just blasted you, then well the unforgivable...but she wouldn't dare mention that, with a sigh her hand slipped up in the air again, not as anxious as before but resigned to answering.

Alice watched the girls hand go up again. She frowned at the girl and wanted to shoot summoned daggers at her but she knew that wasn't like herself and no matter how jealous she was of the girl she wouldn't do it not unless the slytherin was as bad as some of the others. But she didn't even know the girls name and it wasn't the right thing to do. She'd have to contain herself she inwardly resolved.
So instead she just sat in the middle of the classroom writing notes in her book margins. Some were related to what was going on but some others were embellished doodles with hearts around a name. She needed to pay more attention she realized as she saw what she'd been doing without realizing it and raised her hand instead.

Sam didn't know what it was, but she could almost feel the negative energy being cast her way, she wanted to lower her hand. She already wasn't feeling well. She felt she had so much to prove and was willing and determined to do anything that would help her case in this subject.
Still, somewhere inside of her a darkness settled. Sure she had a new start. Sure she was trying to start over, maybe even make some friends. Maybe she didn't have to be the monster her mother created, but that monster was still inside of her, lying, waiting to howl. It wanted blood, it wanted to shove everything and everyone else out of the way so it could shine, and it certainly had enough practice doing so.
She chanced a glance behind her, still feeling the heat of someone's eyes like a sixth sense, when her eyes landed on Alice, she tilted her head as if in question...what did the girl have against her?

Alice saw the girl looking back at her as she raised her hand.. she'd still been staring daggers at the girl unconsciously. The girl was pretty, and made Alice feel like a dull brown mouse in comparison. She purposely looked away as soon as the girl caught her eye with a questioning look. She hadn't meant to be caught staring at her and looked at the professor purposely ignoring the girl's gaze.
She wasn't sure what she was going to do about things and now was certainly not the place nor the time. Her back stiffened, she wasn't going to back down like a mouse though, not to some slytherin girl anyways. She probably was one of those girls who liked to go around breaking boys hearts for all she knew. But she stopped thinking of the girl and concentrated on the professor instead.

Samantha sighed when the girl looked away, , but her own back stiffened and her teeth clenched she looked to the front of the room. Whatever the issue was it wasn't Samantha's fault, she hadn't done anything that would merit anger from anyone here and she didn't intend to, despite her Slytherin coloring. She wished she wasn't in the position to be watched though as it was a nigging feeling, one she was only too well acquainted with. The last thing she wanted to do at *this* school was watch her back or endure the paranoia that she had at her last school.
Thank God Rafe was still in France, she couldn't take anymore of him. Of course no one had believed her last time she said that he was causing problems for her. Not Rafe, not the *everybody's friend* Rafe. He was such a nice guy, such a normal guy. It just didn't make any sense that a guy who could with his money and charm have any girl he wanted chase after a single onel. Chase...that was an understatement, more like cornered, intimidated, stalked...she shivered unconsciously.

Maxi raised her hand, her normal, energetic self. She held her hand up high, glad that she actually knew an answer. She saw the silent war flashing between Samantha and Alice and then looked at the Professor. 'Pick me!' she thought.

Isabella saw all the hands go up, and looked around the room at each student. Samantha, though a new transfer student, was certainly eager to participate. And although she was a little leery of calling on the girl again, in case she got another... disturbing... example, she felt it was important to encourage the girl. "Yes, Miss Montgomery first, then Miss Prewett and Miss Borale." She pointed to each student in the order that their hands had gone up.

Sam wet her lips, "Stupefy has a specific countercurse, Ennervate." she said much more tersely than the last time she spoke. She could have talked about Confringo, or Sectumsempra, or a thousand others, but she had embarrassed herself enough for one day.

Isabella nodded. "Yes, very good, Miss Montgomery. Five points to Slytherin." She turned her head to Alice Prewett, waiting for her answer. "Miss Prewett, I believe you were next?" she inquired. She decided after the last two students had a chance to answer, she would begin the practical portion of the class.

Alice waited for the professor to respond to Sam's answer before suggesting her own. She still wanted to shoot daggers at the girl but instead just resolved to stare in her direction with annoyance. How could a guy like Frank like a girl two years younger than him anyways? She huffed internally and her eyes narrowed in Sam's direction.
"Levicorpus, it hangs your victim upside down by the ankles. The counter curse is Liberacorpus."

Maxi looked at Alice, who was next to answer and saw her staring daggers at Sam. She wanted to give her answer before she forgot, so she waved to get Alice's attention and pointed toward the teacher.

Alice looked at the teacher as she spoke her answer after having Maxi almost wave her attention away. She felt a bit sheepish, not only that she was probably being childish but that she had gotten caught being childish. She hoped no one else noticed.

Isabella caught a bit of tension between Alice Prewett and Samantha, but she didn't think Sam was aware of it. However, she missed Maxi's hand motion. "Yes, Miss Prewett. Very good answer. Five points for Gryffindor." Turning back to Maxi, she nodded at the Hufflepuff girl. "And then Miss Borale?"

Sam wasn't immune to the hateful stare, she could still feel Alice's eyes as they dug a hole through the back of Sam's skull. What was the girl's problem?
Sam's hurt quickly turned to anger, she hadn't done a thing worth being angry at, at this school. In her other school...well she wasn't the most liked person. She could have laughed, yes she was. She was the most liked person at Beauxbatons, well the most notorious anyway, that school loved her, they either loved her or they feared her and for good reason. While Sam's mother lived Sam was indeed a monster, pushing for success in whatever way necessary.
She was society's little angel all the adults loved her, and meanwhile she had to keep a tight reign on her reputation to make sure her...not so shining moments didn't come out. She didn't care who she had to flirt with, promise favors to, threaten, or seriously destroy in order to get her way, and she always got her way. But then...Marrion had died, and with her the pressure to be the best, she was no longer responsible if she wasn't the queen of this ball, or the president of that club, but then it had become survival.
There were too many people whom she had around her finger that wouldn't hesitate to put a dagger in her back if they had the power, but they didn't. She found it odd however that one had been able to chase her off. That Rafe had done a thorough enough job freaking her out, though she'd never admit it, that somehow he had managed to do what nearly half the elitists at Beauxbatons would have done anything to achieve. Well she was out of their clutches and this was her chance for peace, she was taking it, and she wouldn't let some girl's hatred over nothing stop her, no she wouldn't let *anything* stop her.

Maxi looked at Sam and Alice, their answers had been so good, why was her's so...well, creepy? morbid almost?
"I was going to say the Unforgivable Curses," Maxi said, not sounding quiet like she wished, but confident like always.

Alice decided she'd better behave herself, and later that afternoon she'd have to go do some extra studying If she concentrated on her studies she wouldn't have to worry about anything else for a while. She sighed and tried not to think about anything else but what was being said in class and she purposely put Sam on mental ignore and refused to look at the girl any longer. She wasn't worth her time. Maxi on the other hand was friendly and she smiled encouragingly at the fifth year hufflepuff she'd known only by name until this year. Maybe because Alice was starting to notice the other kids this year more now that she wasn't with Frank all the time the last few weeks anyways. She'd been hunting out potential new friends and Maxi seemed nice enough.
She scribbled some notes in the margins of her book as the lesson continued.

A cold numbing sensation formed in the pit of Sam's stomach when Maxi answered. Then her reaction was completely automatic, she couldn't control her body at all as her face paled three shades whiter and she shivered once before the broomhandle was in place, but this time it was different, her spine had stiffened in fear. She was afraid to move, afraid to breathe.
The unforgivables.
Sam couldn't believe it was brought up, but then she was a fool this was D.A.D.A of course it would come up.
She tried to stare at the front of the class, she was focusing, focusing...she needed something to focus on quickly. She looked to the windows focusing, focusing...focusing way too much. Suddenly a single window pane shattered and shards went flying, a large one caught Sam accross the cheek, but she was the closest to the window, hopefully no one else was hurt.
Sam had flung her hair over her face her hand to her cheek to protect herself but when she sat up again her hand came away with blood, it was a stark contrast the blood against her pale pale skin, green eyes that were now wide open all against the darkness of her hair.
She sat there shocked into silence her hand faintly touching the cut on her cheek and pulling back to verify that it was bleeding. She looked at the window, how had that happened?

Alice had been sitting just off to the side and slightly behind Samantha and was close to the window when it shattered. She hadn't been expecting the blast and she certainly didn't have time to repel the shards. One managed to cut into her shoulder blade though luckily not too deeply, and another hit the back of her arm and sliced it open cleanly. Alice yelped and jumped out of her chair in pain reaching to pull the shard out of her arm.
She hadn't known why it shattered or who had done it but right now she was trying to put pressure on the wound on her arm to slow the bleeding.

It was the yelp that brought Samantha back to attention she blinked and then moved into action standing up she turned and saw Alice, it didn't matter that Alice had been the one hating her, she withdrew her wand, "Episkey!" she cast the healing spell quickly forgetting about her cheek. The wound repaired itself seemingly as if it hadn't happened though it would still be fairly tender for fifteen minutes, and then kind of itchy.
It was a spell that they should have taught students as early as possible and kept them practicing since it was ever so useful, but it was a difficult spell to cast pending on the injury. Samantha, to her bitterness, was well trained with the spell. She doubted the nurse could have done much better in the hospital wing.
"Are you alright?!" she asked then looked back at the window and finally to the professor, she hadn't known what happened either but had the shards hit higher up they would have blinded her.

Alice looked a bit in shock and as the girl jumped to action with a quick and quite efficient healing spell. Alice felt the wounds close and heal, they had stopped bleeding already and the wound seemed to heal instantly as if it had never been there. She'd had that spell cast on her before, she was no stranger to being unlucky or injuring herself accidentally. She looked up at the girl who had healed her forgetting her animosity for a moment. "yes, I think so. Thank you." she said simply. She wasn't sure what else to say and she wondered at how fast the girl had responded, unusually quick and Alice looked from the busted window to the girl wondering.
She was grateful for one thing at least, she wouldn't have to visit the ward again. She spent an inordinate amount of time in there but usually just out of her own bad luck. She was good at deflecting spells when she was paying attention and knowing they were coming, it was when she had relaxed her guard or wasn't paying attention that she managed to end up injured somehow. Alice sat slowly down in her chair and even though she still wasn't sure about that girl's intentions with her friend, Frank she had a slight respect for the girls quick response and selfless healing of her injuries.
